Evolve’s Ridiculous DLC Pricing Should Annoy Gamers Everywhere

CraveOnline: "When it was first announced Evolve swiftly became one of my most anticipated releases of the near future. As a big fan of the Left 4 Dead series, Turtle Rock Studios’ tweaking of that formula and replacing zombies with otherworldly monsters seemed like a sure-fire hit."

I really dislike this. But DLC pricing is not set by the Developer., it's the publisher so blame 2K Games.

FullmetalRoyale4160d ago

I won't be buying this game new, or at all.

This is the position that they have put me in, where I cannot simply give a fair amount of money for a fair amount of game.

Preorder now! Or else!

ABizzel14160d ago (Edited 4160d ago )

@Fullmetal

Completely agree.

I loved Left 4 Dead to death, so Evolve was heavily on my radar.

Played the beta, and was a bit disappointed, but hoped more content, maps, characters, and monsters would make it better. Now they're charging $25 for that extra content.

This game gets a complete pass for me.

At this point if you're interested Gamefly it, otherwise for the sake of gaming pass on it, until they're forced to drop price. There are too many other good games coming out anyway.

KumquatGOATBEEF4160d ago

@ABizzel1

Preach. It's time we vote with our wallets. Unfortunately, gamers in this day and age are beginning to accept that DLC is inevitable and shell out their money anyway. But if we become more resolute in our stance against DLC, especially DLC that provides little content at absurd prices, we can hopefully alter the way these companies do business in the future.

Remember how X1 changed? The gamers spoke and X1 tabled a lot of their initial ideas. We have to do the same here. Like ABizzel1 said, there are way too many good games out now and coming out that are much more worthy of our attention and patronage that we can pass on this and let them know we will not appreciate being held hostage to their inflated DLC prices.

JaredH4160d ago

The price is ridiculous but every map they create post launch is free. So not buying any of the DLC, which reminds me of fighting game DLC with skins and new characters, still allows you to play with everyone else and doesn't alienate people who don't buy DLC. That's the only positive for me since this DLC is actually mandatory and not required like maps packs in certain games.

Forn4160d ago (Edited 4160d ago )

Yep, it's officially a no buy for me as well, just as AC:U was/is.

ifistbrowni4160d ago (Edited 4160d ago )

I'm pretty sure paying $25 for the season pass doesn't even allow you the pre-order monster "Behemoth"

So, theoretically, if you bought the game without a pre-order at launch for full price, bought the season pass for $25 ($85), you would still have to spend an extra $15 to get all the content. $100 for this game?? I dont think so.

I loved L4D, I started following Evolve recently feeling destined to buy it at launch... This news killed it for me, though. They're asking way too much for way too little (content wise).

@JaredH, I dont think you know the definition of mandatory. "Since this DLC is actually mandatory and not required"

Bobby Kotex4160d ago

Dying Light is doing a exclusive game mode as a preoder. This is starting to become a terrible trend.

JaredH4160d ago (Edited 4160d ago )

@ifistbrowni

Cool I made a spelling mistake but this is n4g where you're treated like an idiot in a passive aggressive way if you do. And you can't edit after 20 minutes. It's NOT mandatory to buy skin and character packs since you can still play with everyone else who has bought the game, even those who buy the packs when you yourself don't.

You can play against DLC monsters and with people who have DLC characters even if you don't own the DLC yourself. The matchmaking isn't segregated like Halo, Call of Duty, etc, based on who has the DLC and who doesn't because new maps will be FREE for everyone.

Gwiz4160d ago

It's like irony is following me the whole day around, but i have been telling this people ALL DAY.
STOP PRE-ORDERING.A lot of things are getting out of hand and the gamer's/consumers should let them know enough is enough with this BS.Not just DLC being expensive but also functionality of games.

garrettbobbyferguson4160d ago

@bobby Kotex

Starting to? This has been a horrible trend since last generation. Only now people are starting to catch on.

xActionBasturdx4160d ago

I agree with you 100%...I will pass on this and just pray L4D3 comes out in this lifetime lol

xActionBasturdx4160d ago

I agree with you 100%...I will pass on this and pray that L4D3 comes out sometime in the future

user55757084160d ago (Edited 4160d ago )

they probably spent too much time and money creating the DLC and now have a real problem trying to market a DLC thats worth about $5 at $25

TheSaint4160d ago

Agreed, this just went from a really interesting title to another cash cow, not buying as long as this BS is staying.

ThanatosDMC4160d ago

I'll wait for the ultimate edition a year after release.

BeefCurtains4160d ago

I'm sick and tired of this money grab BS!

Thanks for buying our game! Oh, did you want content too? That costs extra... By the way, your game will be operational in about 3 weeks after a series of patches. Enjoy!

I love left 4 dead but I don't see anything worth my time in Evolve. The whole game seems like just one optionl game mode in games I've played in the past.

I can't believe they're basing the whole game on just the 4v1 aspect. That's gonna get boring Real fast.

Please let them just get to work on left 4 dead 3 once this game crashes and burns.

3-4-54160d ago

This game looked really boring and uninteresting to me, so I was never going to buy it.

But now I'm going to NEVER buy it just out of spite/principle.....not even for $4.00 used....

ifistbrowni4160d ago

$4, really guy??

You really hold a grudge. $4 would be an awesome price for this game. It should launch at $30 new, though.. There is no way they should justify this as a "full" game.

Shnooze4160d ago

So, wait. What's your point if you were never going to get it to begin with?

Muzikguy4160d ago

This is the kind of stuff that I was always figuring DLC would lead to. Most DLC pricing "annoys" me already. That's why I don't buy any! As for this game though, I won't even look at it anymore. Why bother trying to do something like this? They should know gamers are being a lot more vocal this gen (and with they're wallets too)

Cra2yey34160d ago (Edited 4160d ago )

I was never interested in this game to begin with and now won't even give it a second look on the shelves.

Psytrix4160d ago

COD: AW DLC is priced at $64.95 here in Aus which is a couple dollars shy of a new release game - Hardly worth it for 4 new maps and some junk accessories.

I've noticed prices have been rising on DLC since 2008. Prices are becoming bloody ridiculous.

Joey_Leone4160d ago

Are they insane? I guess they don't want my money, gonna buy it used now, i guess that's what they wanted right? Makes sense.

CuddlyREDRUM4160d ago

The developer develops the content and how it is sold. This passing the buck to the publisher means even the most money-grubbing developer can't ever be blamed for anything.

jrshankill4160d ago

They done the same with WWE 2K15. Their Season Pass does not give all DLC content. They never specifically said this until after the season pass was released. Absolutely atrocious way of doing business.

On top of this, WWE 2K15 was a massive step back for the franchise in terms of match modes and creation features. 2K are the new EA... or Capcom.

I won't buy another game by 2K.

geddesmond4160d ago

The game was only slightly on my radar but after the Season pass price its now in stealth mode and my radar will never pick it up again.

In all honesty though the only DLC ever worth buying is expansions of the game world, like Skyrims or Fallouts. Character skins smh. I remember developers used to add character skins as unlockables for beating games on the hardest difficulties or other challenges in a game.

Now everything is for sale. Buy this, buy that, our game only ships with 8 weapons but don't worry for 3 euros you can buy this weapon. GTFO

Abash4161d ago

I feel like it really is getting ridiculous. Well established, long-running series know that their most passionate fans will shell out more money for whatever DLC they offer, but it's even worse when a new IP believes it can get away with it too.

FullmetalRoyale4160d ago (Edited 4160d ago )

It truly is frustrating to have to go through this with something that I love. I remember just picking a game because the box looked cool, when I was just a child.

There is so much keeping me at arms length that prevents me from being in love with it. I still love it, but not IN love like I used to be.

NarooN4160d ago

That gif sums up my feelings on modern day gaming pretty well.

dreamed4160d ago (Edited 4160d ago )

Agreed, ubisoft did a similar thing with watchdogs.....calling aiden Pierce's baseball cap iconic when its a new IP that nobody had played at the time.

They also sold five different dlc pre order versions of it,which IMO is absolute contempt of the highest order towards paying customers.

"Publisher customer contempt" is probably the biggest change I've noticed that's come with this generation of consoles, not saying it wasn't happening last gen,but its defo had the biggest overhaul along with the hype train getting a new lick of paint.

IMO gaming is going in such a shite direction, and its getting worse every year, its already got to where we are all paying £60 per beta test ,that even with loads of patches never work as advertised.

What i find strange though is the guys n gals that make excuse's for these devs n publishers........you ppl know who you are,pls explain to me why you think broken games are so appealing?

Also I played enough evolve during the beta and was board after a couple of hours,it gets very repetitive very quick IMO.

PoSTedUP4161d ago

dont buy. even when they drop the price down, dont buy. just do it, it'll be fun.

ArchangelMike4160d ago

Yup. I'm not buying Evolve at all. I'll be knee deep in anythign else, that does'nt want to cheat me out of pocket.

BattleTorn4160d ago

I'm with ya, no more to MP-modes wrapped in $60 packaging.

JonnyBigBoss4161d ago

I'm not going to lie, I found it to be a slap in the face.

Ashunderfire864161d ago (Edited 4161d ago )

Nothing wrong with just a rental anyway.

Report: Evolve 2 Was Once in Development, Concept Art Reveals Scrapped Sequel

It has been recently revealed by an artist that a sequel to the 2015 title Evolve was in the works. However, this project wouldn't last long.

jznrpg320d ago

Didn’t bother with the first one.

TheColbertinator320d ago

All I wanted was Left 4 Dead 3 instead

Abnor_Mal320d ago

Was this game ahead of its time? A few years later games like Dead By Daylight, Friday the 13th and other asymmetrical games exploded onto the scene.

MeteorPanda320d ago

if lm not mistaken it started the asymmetrical pvp matches. Evolves logo was a nod to their concept.

The_Blue320d ago

They should have because I played the first one when it was already dead

Evolve or Die: The final days of the follow-up to Left 4 Dead

Back in 2016, Turtle Rock announced that support for its 4v1 monster-hunting shooter Evolve would end but fans wouldn't let it die.

100°

‘Evolve: Stage 2’ is back from the dead as peer-to-peer servers come back online

From NME: "Evolve: Stage 2 had its multiplayer servers shut down back in 2018, but today players are once again able to matchmake and join peer-to-peer multiplayer games.

Several months ago, peer-to-peer functionality was lost for Evolve Legacy, which was the only way fans of the series could play with friends. Upon a multitude of players reaching out to publisher 2K, the issue was eventually fixed earlier in July. It seems 2K have gone a step further now, and reinstated peer-to-peer and matchmaking functionality for Evolve: Stage 2 after four years."

MIDGETonSTILTS171409d ago

^^this, I have so many awesome skins on Xbox that I’d rather not lose

Germaximus1409d ago

Yes so far because it's just the servers alone coming on and the console version never had the free-to-play update.

I imagine if they find people playing the PC version and enough players are enjoying it then they'd probably reconsider opening console as well but I wouldn't count on it.

The game was epic as a monster. Hunters were really boring to play as to me.

LordoftheCritics1409d ago

I used to play this a bit.

Was kinda fun.
