It's obvious that the PS3 saved Blu-ray. Sony knew what they were doing when they installed Blu-ray in the PS3.

If Sony didn't install Blu-ray in the PS3, HD-DVD would have won the format war hands down because HD-DVD was cheaper than Blu-ray. Consumers were much more reluctant to buy a stand alone HD-DVD player and a stand alone Blu-ray DVD player intially, but all Sony had to do was sell PS3's, and they would be selling Blu-ray players and their next-gen gaming consoles at the same time and Sony locked up the format war conclusively.

And to be totally honest, if it wasn't for the PS3 having Blu-ray, I wouldn't even have a Blu-ray player right now. When I bought the PS3, I had no intention of even buying Blu-ray movies at all, and I bought my PS3 soley as a gaming console first and foremost, but just a few weeks ago I made up in my mind that I was going to start buying Blu-ray DVD's and I was no longer buying Standard DVD's (except for the DBZ Season DVD boxed sets).

Spiderman 3 when I bought my PS3. You have to be stupid to buy a Ps3 just to watch movies. However if the Ps3 has blu-ray why not watch what it can do?

i said it before and i'll say it again, HD-DVD died because they forgot that gamers watch movies as well, games are a form of entertainment, so are movies. both types of entertainment use the disc format to distribute the movies to consumers. when the PS3 launched, it was the most expensive system when it came out, but it was the cheapest blu-ray player around $600>$1000 at the time. alot of idiots(mainly HD-DVD owners) thought it was too little too late for BD, but they forgot the gamers, they forgot about the PS2 which had a DVD player built in, which helped boost DVD movie sales at the time. they also ignored that the PS3 had a BD player built in although it was expensive. they forgot that studios do not make money off of players but off of disc they sell.

If microsoft wanted to win this Generation(or compete in this Generation), they should of worked with toshiba implement HD-DVD into their 360s back before the console launched, microsoft had and has the money to help get a next-gen disc format out the door, not to mention the launch of HD-DVD was in January of 2006, about 2 months after the launch of the 360. look what they did instead. DVD is limiting developers from adding extra content to their games, not to mention raising the quality of a game. dont believe me, just look at games such as Lost Odessey, MLB 2k8, and now the rumored Forza 3, a driving simulation game that has been stated that it might use 2 discs with over 400 cars. on the other hand Devs who make PS3 games dont face such problems, GT5 is rumored to have 600-800 cars + over 100 tracks all in one disc. i can name others, Resistance 2,KZ2,MGS4,R&C,etc. the list goes on.

this is a lesson that these idiots should never forget, next time if the same situation arises again in the future(if there will ever a successor to Blu-ray) they should learn about this costly mistake so it doesnt happen ever again.

Poor Xbots

Poor Xbots, they are sticking with the fixme dvd player, while us PS3 owners are experiencing 1080p bluray movies. Poor Xbots, that they use their hd-dvd add on for an object to hold their door open. Poor Xbots, they wasted their money on a broken fixme dvd player when they could have had a full experience with movies and games, instead of their system breaking on them.

Why is this still news?. In years to come people will look back at the PS3 as the reason why Blu won like how VHS won because of blue movies.

PS3 didn't save blu-ray...Time Warner did. If Time Warner didn't decide to pull their support of HD-DVD the format war would still be going on regardless of the PS3. It was Time Warner's impatience and desire to try and pull in more profit by not having to support 2 formats that sealed HD-DVD's fate.

Blu-ray did not need saving

It was sony's goal to use the ps3 to push blu-ray.

They priced the console at the right price which targeted individuals aged 25 and up.

This bracket has more disposible income and they came from the previous generations of play station.

Smart move and sony knew it.

I've been saying this for like, a year.

Yet, a lot of people also like to say that had the 360 had an HD-DVD drive for it's games and for movies, HD-DVD would've trounced Blu-ray, which simply isn't true.

If the 360 had included an HD-DVD drive, the launch price would've been $1000 in '05, and even THAT price would've operated at a loss for at least six months. By the time the PS3 had released, an HD-DVD enabled 360 would've JUST started to hit the $600 mark, and then Sony wouldn't be the only company posting a $3 Billion loss.

And something just hit me, could you imagine the financial devastation that an HD-DVD 360 with the RROD fiasco would've been? We're talking $5-$6 Billion easy. Ouch. If only, though, if only.

It should be other way round. BD saved ps3 for selling more than 10 million. IF there ws no BD included, BD would have died as well but in the end 70% of the public bought ps3 for being a BD player. We can see the attach ratio or total sales of the few AA games on ps3. If people are so hungry for games on ps3 then why the sales havn't crossed 1 mil for 95% of ps3 gaems.

Why does somebody have to be a "dumbleep", stupid, or dumb if they purchased a ps3 for the bluray. My first ps3 was purchased at launch only to go to ebay, and then my second one was bought as a wedding gift only after hd dvd pulled out. As stated by others....ps3 at the time, and still might be, the best bluray player on the market...while also having been the cheapest (price wise). Think about all those people who bought the original bluray player with no ethernet capabilities....for more than the price of a ps3. When Best Buy was running their promotion of receiving a free bluray player with the purchase of an hdtv over a $1000...do you really think people who got the ps3 is a "dumbleep" even if they choose never to play a ps3 game?

More companies supported Blu-ray from the beginning so by majority vote Blu-ray was going to win anyways.
PS3 helped to show how Blu-ray could be used in the making of games and that is just part of the reason Blu-ray had such a big effect.

what a ridiculous way of looking at it. if Blu-ray had been out for two years before PS3 had released, i'd say there way be an argument, but the fact is that PS3 didn't 'save' Blu-ray, it actually heralded in a new era of disk (ie: Blu-ray)

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

So now there's certifiable proof that Ryan was in fact "fired", as opposed to when it was first announced that he "retired", in order to save face.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
