Days Gone Director Says Bend's Project Costs Over $250M; Says PS Co-CEO Doesn't Want 2 Zombies Games

Days Gone director claims Sony has already poured in at least a $250M in Bend's project; says Days Gone sold more than Death Stranding.

shinoff2183719d ago

Well that sucks. Seems they want more online trash. I'd rather of had the sequel if it was single player

MrNinosan718d ago

What online trash games did PS Studios release last 10 years?

Notellin718d ago

The past has nothing to do with the future. This is such a terrible argument. Everyone knows about their current live service push.

_SilverHawk_718d ago

It's so tragic what happened to days gone. It is such an amazing game but bandwagoners trashed it and it underperformed in it's launch year. Days gone is the best open world zombie game released in the past five years. I was recently playing it on pc and I'm still amazed by it.

Games are very expensive to make and it seems like it's normal for a AAA game to cost over a quarter billion to make so if a quality game like days gone greatly underperforms then people shouldn't be upset when they see a lot of GAAS. I still remember a lot of bandwagoners calling days gone trash but years later it's now amazing when it's considered a failure by sony.

If a game isn't the best thing seen since hats with pockets then a lot of gamers who haven't played it automatically calls it rubbish and whoever made it should be incarcerated

Cacabunga718d ago (Edited 718d ago )

Co CEO prefers gamers to boycott.. so be it. I’ll never buy a gaas.
Just imagine buying a game you cannot replay in some years.. this shit must stop.

Days Gone did zombies in a very original way. The story was also so engaging. You actually only meet Zombie hordes later in the game. There are many more enemy groups to deal with.

MrNinosan718d ago

@Notelin
I am one of the few who bought Days Gone on release day and loved it completely.
However, "more online trash" is phrased like Sony has put out alot of trash online games.
We got what, 2 games? Helldivers 2 and GT7, 2 of the most sold Playstation games where both is loved by millions.

You, me and especially shinoff has no idea if Fairgames, Marathon and Concord will be trash.

Just because we (as in you and me) don't love or support online games, doesn't mean millions of other do.

And we don't know what Bend Studio is working with? We don't know if they're forced to make a online game or another amazing single player experience.

The only thing we do know is that it's not Days Gone, sadly due to poor sales the first 6 months.

shinoff2183718d ago (Edited 718d ago )

More online trash wasmt meant how insee it comes across. I should've worded it different I was meaning the focus they currently have on it.

Anything online is online trash to me. How long did naughty dog spend on that dumba last of us multiplayer, how about Concord, or even the other couple we hear about. I fk with Sony because rpgs and their 1st party single player games. Been like that for years. I hate seeing them waste time, money, and talent on trash. I understand bot every game is gonna be for me but this focus they've seem to had on multiplayer is extremely disheartening. Even at the state of play the only things I was really feeling were Astrobot and silent hill 2 and I'm content with that, not everything is for me. It's just the online focus I hate. Ms bought up 3 to 4 wrpgs developers, Sony just ignores rpgs 1st party wise.

And a days gone 2 would've been much better then whatever online sht bend is working on. I do know sometimes I get very idk emotional. I do need to work on toning that down a bit lol

SimpleDad717d ago

Ammm let's see... That All-stars, Foamstars, Babilon 5 wass gaas...
Concord... can wait to play that...Marathon uuuu... Last of them gaas... U
Horizon Zero dawn has a project that leaked as a Fortnite lookalike.

They bought Destiny that is a dead gaas...people love ti.

Helldivers 2 was luck.

Jimbo was all in and pushed Sony single player games 5 years behind.

Spiderman gaas was cancelled... I mean every 1st party studio was doing gaas.

Bend had to pitch a gaas game... Open world coop something

I can't remember more... Of that crap.

tay8701717d ago

@simpledad. Destiny 2 isn't a dead game. Its the number 5 most played game on steam. I dont play it, but alot of people do.

MrNinosan717d ago

@SimpleDad
You failed to mention a single PS Studios game that has been released last 10 years.
Either your reading skills are crap or you think Sony own every studio in the world.

I rolled my eyes at concord not only was it just yet another cookie cutter hero shooter but that qucik look for the hero select.

Already has a free section then paid section along with a they/them she/her dei crap top right.

Nothing like a day off of work to fire up concord to read about the new characters sexual identity and or preference then a paywall do you want o buy this character shit like no i just want to shoot my gun have fun.

-Foxtrot719d ago

It would be a shame if it was true that Hermen never gave the franchise a chance simply because he didn't like it and they already had a "Zombie" game with TLOU.

NaughtyDog are most likely moving onto a new IP next so it would have been the perfect time to do it.

ThinkThink718d ago

Here's where xbox steps in and releases state of decay 3 day and date on ps5.

shinoff2183718d ago

I mean it's not out of the realm of possibility at this point.

Grilla718d ago

Days gone 2 was canceled before Herman was in charge. That happened like 4 years ago.

vfl523718d ago

4 years ago he was head of Playstation Studios. He would've probably had a hand in the cancelation.

Notellin718d ago

Man two seconds of research could have saved you from this comment. Amazing work Grilla you fit in with the uniformed N4G community who speaks before verifying anything that they say.

Redemption-64718d ago

Maybe encourage people to buy the game at full price and not when it's heavily discounted or go on plus. If this game had sold well when it was full priced a sequel would have been in the works. They made a single-player game that most people didn't support until they dropped the price.

Cacabunga718d ago

The guy’s just a moron.. he should have stayed within game development. His choices will have a terrible impact on the brand in the long run.

tay8701718d ago (Edited 718d ago )

Dude is pretty pathetic. Sounds like a guy who's girl left him for someone better. Always talking about days gone sequel that never was, even though he is no longer at bend and hasnt been for a while. I for one am not upset about the lack of a sequel. It is one of the worst 1st party games in recent memory. Completely jank, played like an xbox game. The only redeeming quality was the hordes.

excaliburps718d ago

Yep. Kind of weird since it wasn't a sales flop, no?

I know we have to take what Ross says with a grain of salt since we're hearing just one side of the story, but even so, the game wasn't bad at all. Heck, it's my brother's favorite last-gen game from what I recall.

The amount of zombies on screen, imagine that with the PS5 and SSD? That would be insanely fun!

Grilla718d ago

Most copies were sold on sale. Not enough ppl bought it at full price. I paid 20$ for it 6 -7 months after release.

Notellin718d ago (Edited 718d ago )

Yeah we should never believe the creators side until we hear the corporate/big business side as history has shown we should always believe billion dollar corporations.

What a bootlicker statement.

derek718d ago

@Notellin, of course you'll believe an embittered ex-employee with an axe to grind because it's evil Sony he's complaining about. You guys act like days gone was this huge success and somehow Sony hates easy money a sequel would have generated. The game was mid and so was the response to it. They're still supporting the developer who is making a new ip that could be great.

shinoff2183718d ago

Days gone was fantastic. I bought day one but didn't get around to it for months. When I finally did I was pissed at myself for waiting so long lol

P_Bomb718d ago

Well I don’t want 10 live service games, but they have no problem doing that lol. Ugh.

CrimsonWing69718d ago (Edited 718d ago )

Oh great so we only get what the big wigs want… y’know, the people that really have their fingers on the pulse of what their consumers want. Faaaaantastic!

rippermcrip718d ago

Well consider they know the sales... they do know what the consumer wants.

It sold shit.

-Foxtrot718d ago (Edited 718d ago )

But if it’s true what this guy says it sold better than Death Stranding

Yet that got a sequel and Kojima aside out of them both DS didn’t really NEED a sequel compared to Days Gone which ended on such a cliff hanger twist.

The story behind Days Gone and the sequel that never was

From USA Today: "“The Walking Dead meets Sons of Anarchy” – that was the original pitch for Days Gone, according to game director Jeff Ross.

“Where The Walking Dead had a great influence on us was the prison season,” he tells FTW. “They’re homesteading within this massively protected fence and boundary. I’m like, ‘Yeah, that’s what I would do.’ You want to be secure, go to the secure facilities. I was like, ‘Wow, this is a lived-in world. These guys live here and then they go beyond the gates to find stuff and run into all kinds of trouble.’ There’s a loop there. That’s gameplay. There’s an overworld.”

Seriously another article about this.

Jess ross honestlys needs to move on from this.

He made a decent game which just wasnt well liked or that special.

Sony isnt in the business of just decent, so yea paur the decent game with lukewarm reception, no sequal is understandable.

Dont think to many of us are shedding a tear over it.

Hopefully bend knocks it out of the park with their next game.

EvertonFC1590d ago

I thought they did a grand job for there 1st AAA game, Sony built them up just to knock them back down IMO. DG had a great foundation like the original killzone had, but GG got a second chance which ended up being an awesome killzone 2. Why didnt Sony give them a chance like they did GG?
Same with DriveClub, it was Sonys answer to Forza yet they let that slip, also Wipeout studio. I love Sony but they dont half mess things up sometimes reminds me of the mistakes my football team are making atm.

DaGR8JIBRALTAR1590d ago

Who's gonna tell Mark Cerny no?

Christopher1590d ago

A sequel that cost next to nothing. Apples to oranges.

mkis0071589d ago

Im just saying that even if it only sold 5 million...that still is sequel numbers.

Petebloodyonion1590d ago

I'm sorry but I found that Day's Gone was a better game compared to Spider-Man
Care to tell me what are the interesting optional quests in Spiderman?
On the other hand, doing runs for Copeland, Tucker, Rikky was fun and brought real story elements.
I was often thrilled about doing Marauders camp because I knew it would give me new crafting recipes.
Saving hostages was always a rush because I knew that they could be killed if not careful and the trust reward was great.
Eliminating my 1st horde was intense versus how meh facing the Taskmaster was.

Perhaps there's a reason why ppl invest a lot of hours in-game like this or Dying light and why ppl play Spider-Man story campaigns and rush to play another game.

Now in the end I'm sure that if the media didn't bash the game day 1 of the reveal by saying do we need another open-world zombie game with Sony Uncharted type of graphics the comment would be completely different for this game. And just a reminder that the media praised MGS5 as a perfect game.

Christopher1590d ago (Edited 1590d ago )

***Care to tell me what are the interesting optional quests in Spiderman?***

The motorcycle gang side quest that even had a boss fight. Too bad other side quests weren't like this.

***On the other hand, doing runs for Copeland, Tucker, Rikky was fun and brought real story elements.***

No they didn't. Only main story items actually added to the story. Side missions in Days Gone were pretty much go someplace and kill either marauders or a horde or horde nest.

***I was often thrilled about doing Marauders camp because I knew it would give me new crafting recipes.***

And people were thrilled about doing side missions in Spider-man because they could unlock new suit abilities, tech, or upgrades.

---

Look, I plated both. They're both about as good on side quest stuff and their stories are what they are. But trying to prop one up over the other when they're pretty similar in open-world design concepts is poor logic.

***Now in the end I'm sure that if the media didn't bash the game day 1 of the reveal by saying do we need another open-world zombie game with Sony Uncharted type of graphics the comment would be completely different for this game.***

I disagree. The game was a solid 7/10 and had its flaws. It was far from as refined as other games and even had framerate issues.

Petebloodyonion1589d ago (Edited 1589d ago )

@ Christopher

***On the other hand, doing runs for Copeland, Tucker, Rikky was fun and brought real story elements.***

No they didn't. Only main story items actually added to the story. Side missions in Days Gone were pretty much go someplace and kill either marauders or a horde or horde nest.

Care to mention which side missions given by town members involve clearing Hordes and infected nests? Cause none of the job handlers ask this kind of job.
But all job features some cutscenes (story element) explaining why you're doing a run and helped explain Deacon's relation toward certain camp members, the camp rules or way of life, relations with a rival gang. Also, jobs provide insight into the personality of Deacon as you could often see him accepting a killing mission without hesitation when harm was done to a defenseless woman in other instances he would lie to Tucker about not finding the target because he/she would be forced to work in a labor camp.

But you bring another aspect that could be a factor for DaysGone being a better game
All side activities generate distinctive kind of reward and effect on the game
While most of Spiderman side activities give basically token and XP (only black cats give you a unique suit)
Almost none of them provide a benefit (aside from Xp and token)

On the other hand
- Clearing Hordes will lessen the infected presence
- Clearing marauders camp will give you map reveal and a crafting recipe
- Clearing nest will allow waypoints
- restoring power to Nero camp will give provide you with a permanent boost
- random event often provide a chance for major trust improvement

Now I'm not saying that my opinion is the best cause I'm sure some ppl loved Spiderman ( The story is one of the best ones for an open world on par with Batman origin)
I'm just saying it's easy to let the pygmalion effect into blaming this game while praising Spiderman
And just check that the average score for ppl on Metacritic that is pretty close versus critics that show a completely different story.

And like I said at the end, Let's just remember that MGS5 is perfection according to critics while Days Gone is a 7/10 game.

Christopher1589d ago

@pete: the quests you're describing aren't side quests.

Petebloodyonion1589d ago

And what would you call them? cause, last I checked, an optional story quest that isn't mandatory to complete is called a side-mission.

And usually ppl talk about side activities for things like collecting 100 things, clearing tower, outpost, hunting, etc..

Though I possess the capacity to appreciate what others love that I don't, I really don't see the big, knockout deal in Days Gone. I thought it was completely average as a game but with exceptional visuals.

The characters and writing were alright and the game, moment-to-moment, was alright. Decent loop, but nothing remarkable. The hordes were cool with the Sawmill being notable, but nothing else was notable to me.

I'd welcome a sequel to tie up the loose ends left by that cliffhanger, and I'd like to see an update to this foundation, but I'm not clamoring for it.

What is remarkable, however, is how the game is still being rather incessantly (yes incessantly) banged on about not only by fans but by this director. It's been a steady drumbeat that's never really died for a game that's not all that popular.

Generally games that aren’t financially successful don’t get sequels. Days Gone didn’t perform well enough for Sony to green light and fund a follow up title. Despite, a former director stating Days Gone sold more than Ghost of Tsushima. His methods of estimating sales where flawed, and the sales number he gave were likely inflated.

I highly doubt Days Gone sold more than Ghost of Tsushima. Hence Sony never publicly announced sales figures for Days Gone, unlike their other successful titles (GoW, Horizon and Ghosts).
Sony, knows how well Days Gone performed. As I stated earlier Sony, based on their confidential data, doesn’t consider Days gone to be title that warrants a sequel.

EvertonFC1590d ago

Killzone was hardly profitable but got a second chance to which ended up putting GG firmly on the map of great studios.
Its a absolute piss take building Bend studios up to then offer them a support role making TLOU remake. I would have punched someone in the face after all my teams hardwork to be asked to be a bit part player again.

Sciurus_vulgaris1590d ago

Killzone 1 didn’t have a very long development cycle, it didn’t cost Sony a lot to produce. Days Gone, however, had a 6 year development, making it much more expensive.

Magog1590d ago (Edited 1590d ago )

Bend Studio is working on a new IP of their own choice and design. I'm sure it will be better than Days Gone given there is fresh blood at the helm. The writing and characters of Days Gone you could tell were written by someone who thought Road House was the peak of Cinema.

EvertonFC1590d ago

You mean gaming fannies throwing there dummies out. Lots of gamers out there who missed out on a fantastic game all because of wokeness ? like I said bunch of fannies acting like 65 year olds writing into agony aunt.

darthv721590d ago

...you mean to tell me you DIDN'T like Roadhouse?

MIDGETonSTILTS171590d ago

I hate sequels to open-world games. GTA pulls it off by changing the setting drastically, and spacing the sequels out with an immense amount of development time.

I’d prefer to see the studio tackle another IP. Personally, I think Sony could use more sci-fi and multiplayer exclusives. I’d love to see Bend spend 5 years on a new multiplayer or sci-fi IP, and then give us Days Gone 2 at the end of the PS5’s lifecycle. I’d love to see their hordes on ps5 once they understand how to tap into the hardware.

Knightofelemia1590d ago (Edited 1590d ago )

What GTA sequels? Only sequel Rockstar has popped out is RDR2. So porting GTA V from PS3/XB360 to PS4/XB1 now to PS5/XB S/X is considered a sequel? And porting the GTA trilogy that barely works to newer systems also is considered a GTA sequel? Rockstar are too busy milking those Shark Cards no one knows when GTA 6 will drop everything is just speculation or rumors. Bully 2 got scrapped, I doubt we will see RDR3 anytime soon, GTA V is getting ported yet again to newer platforms, doubt L.A Noire will get a sequel. Can't figure out how you think GTA gets sequels unless you're reliving the PS1, PS2/OG Xbox days.

gold_drake1590d ago (Edited 1590d ago )

the guy doesn’t seem to be able to move on.

Silly Mammo1590d ago
