Codemasters Being Hit by Layoffs

The popular racing game developers Codemasters, have suffered layoffs, sources told Eurogamer.

Known for their Formula 1 and Dirt series, Codemasters currently have a staff of around 500, with 30 apparently at risk of losing their positions. According to an unnamed source, the game designers for the Grid and Dirt games are the ones at risk, with the programmers and production staff relatively safe.

Codemasters currently have two known games in production: a new F1 game for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and a new entry in the Dirt series. A smaller, downsized team have been working on the new Dirt entry, which was originally planned to be announced soon.

They been on decline for sometime not supprised bitmap brothers no longer there shame one the best british developers too.
Too much the racers yet codemasters have heaps other IPs under there belt why not bring back overlord these the guys made it big with DIZZY 8Bit days.

Agreed. they've only gone down in quality while also being guilt of some DLC-milking, which is why I stopped buying their games for full price, and only pick them up in sales.

Dirt2 was a gorgeous game, but way tooo focussed on the 'Xtreme' crap, instead of just putting rally-racing first. Dirt3 wasn't much better, plus somehow managed to have less gorgeous environments to race through. All rally-races are also wayyy too short.

GRID1 was outstanding. Gorgeous racer which looked and played great. GRID2 was terrible. Played it for free through PS+ and really glad I didn't pick it up. AI was horrible, where often you would lose certain races (those one-on-one's) because the AI touched you, and it had this really ugly filter which made it all look very grey/brown.

The newest GRID was supposed to be decent again, but I never bothered with it, and I doubt I will.

F1 games seem to only appeal to a very small demographic. I bought F1 12 I believe in a PSN sale, but it wasn't very interesting or fun to me. Played it for a couple of days, then moved on.

I really wish Codemasters would simply release a proper rally-game again, focusing primarily on JUST the rally-races.

Not on short tracks, but on LONG tracks, and through MANY gorgeous diverse locations with lots of different weather- and time settings.

Also, whenever you 'gold' a track, you should unlock a top-down version of that track, so you can also play a top-down version of the game, maybe against other players/AI. That would hark back to their golden days from when they did stuff like Micro Machines.

My biggest problem with recent Codemasters games is the incredibly long loading times for simple menu transitions!!

Drives me nuts, that a menu would do the job - but we have to have bells and whistles for something that should be simple and quick.

I loved the F1 games, but unfortunately with the new gen of consoles not supporting older wheels like the Logitech G27 I have much less interest in buying their games - especially the F1 games, where I think a wheel is pretty much essential.

I'm sure Codemasters would be on to a winner if they had a 3 year cycle for their racing games - so Year 1 we get a new GriD, Year 2 we get a new Rally game, Year 3 we get some sort of Xtreme racer. I would assume to justify the Formula 1 licence costs we'd need that every year or 2. It would keep things fresh.

And, I really don't know why they are not using their old IP. Dizzy would sell if they created an old skool platformer, or even a full 3D platformer.

too much ken block will kill you

If only they put a proper cockpit view in Grid AutoSport

I have never played CM's racing games but I was a big fan of the Operation Flashpoint games all the way up the Dragon Rising. I wish they could hook up with Bohemia Interactive again and deliver another OF game. I like Arma but the OP Flash games were way more story driven.

hiredhelp4135d ago

Flashpoint was bohemia Game untill codemasters had a fued then codemasters held the liscense for the game. So Arma was born much better game too realisticly driven.

'It marked the first time the studio had used the license in 18 years since 2022’s Colin McRae Rally 3.'

Can you not get AI to do proofreading?

TheColbertinator374d ago

Weird article written by a bot.

In any case I knew EA would ruin Codemasters.

Codemasters will likely close soon😞

Here’s the deal with this bullsh*t, and this is the single reason I f*cking hate digital, this wouldn’t be so much an issue if these people would give an announcement before they pull their games so people have a chance to get them before they’re gone. I mean, how hard is that to do?

Like, I prefer digital for the convenience of it and making me less of a hoarder, but stuff like this can drive me up the wall and I’m aware this also happens with physical games, but you can still acquire a game from eBay, though all scalped to hell, whereas digital you’re SOL… unless you have a PC.

spicelicka417d ago

Not to mention they also replace old base games with "bundles" back at full price. Some of the old and shittiest COD games are still full price on digital stores.

phatak417d ago (Edited 417d ago )

yup everything you said is correct, but with digital you can also acquire it lol thanks to piracy, thats what made me a pirate . Spec ops the line got delisted last year and I just pirated it and never looked back, unfortunately these bigger publishers dont care about older games so dont even give a reminder, so if they dont even care about their own older games, why should I help them with their new games, ill pirate those as well. GOG is the best, you dont even need to pirate those, the games literally dont have any drm, and you can keep the files permanently too.

Michiel1989417d ago

the reason why i hate digital is because in 20 years when the servers go down, you can't play single player games anymore because shitty fucking companies want you to login to some arbitrary service to pad the numbers.

When a company like GoG does better than a titan like Sony, you know how terrible the state of gaming is.

Vits417d ago

Technically you are not wrong, only forgot to add Rights Management after the "digital".

CantThinkOfAUsername417d ago

These games had exactly 0 players. If you haven't played any of them by now you really didn't care in the slightest. Suddenly you're dying to play one of these classic turds? Sail to cs.rin.ru.

MrWood417d ago

Your right, if you click on the article vs the clickbait picture showing new and modern games, they are all old games I’ve never even heard of.

Zeke68417d ago

If you never heard of any of these games, are you even a gamer? ;)

Report: F1 24 Cover Datamined From F1 23 Files as Website Surfaces

The F1 24 announcement seems imminent, as the Champions Edition cover and details have surfaced in F1 23's game files after the latest patch.

Yi-Long802d ago

To Sony, and so many other companies in this industry, the short-term satisfaction and happiness of their shareholders means so much more to them than their employees, their products, and their customers.

Yi-Long802d ago

Apologies, don't know how the above comment ended up here while it clearly should have gone to other article about the Sony lay-offs. Please delete.
