The next Castlevania

"Castlevania has provided some of the most exciting and certainly most challenging gaming experiences to date. Taking control of Simon Belmont and facing Dracula and his ghouls has always been highly entertaining. I can't help but imagine where the next game in the series will take us." -BootHammer

LoS what a great game. But after reading the reviews for the last one was kind of disappointing. Hopefully the next one will be better.

BootHammer4146d ago

It seemed many gamers preferred LoS1. Both were fun for sure but I'm hoping for a darker more difficult experience on the next outing.

BoNeSaW234146d ago

Did you play LoS? I thought the mood and atmosphere was perfectly dark for a Castlevania game. I loved it!

Roccetarius4146d ago (Edited 4146d ago )

MercurySteam had some internal problems when developing Mirror of Fate and LoS 2, which lead to some people leaving the studio. One of them being their main Art Director, for example.

Either way, it's safe to say that the quality between the first and those 2 is noticeable. I think the weakest point for the first game was combos, because you never really had time to perform longer combos.

As for the future of Castlevania, i don't think we'll see anything for a long time. The creator is not even working for them anymore either.

Hold_It4146d ago (Edited 4146d ago )

"Reviews" that's what the problem was. Everyone trashed the game because it wasn't call of duty or some hold my hand difficulty game.

Sure the story for LOS 1 was better than LOS2, but consider this. We never had a Castlevania game where we got to play as Dracula. The voice acting was great, the game improved upon LOS1 in almost every aspect but story. The game was open-world, almost no loading times, free camera, refined combat system, better gfx, brought the protagonist from the canceled Dreamcast version of Castlevania.

This game got too much hate than it deserves and people that trust reviews instead of forming their own opinions is why the gaming industry is trash, and why bad companies like Activision and Ubisoft still exist.

plmkoh4146d ago

Yep I replayed the game on PC, truly 2014's forgotten gem. The combo feedback was excellent and the voice acting was good as expected. Story didn't meet the standards but it's definately not 6/10 like most major gaming sites reviewed it.

BootHammer4146d ago

Critics have gotten so critical lately. They tend to harp on every little flaw instead of looking at all the things done right. I'm amazed how some games are just ripped apart for poor reasons and then due to this fact, many don't even try the game out for themselves.

I just want a 2D sequel of Symphony of the Night.

LightofDarkness4146d ago

They've made half a dozen SotN successors, the formula is quite stale at this point. The series needs to shake things up while respecting its roots. IMO, Dark Souls is a lot like what Castlevania should have become. They're a lot alike, actually.

BoNeSaW234146d ago (Edited 4146d ago )

Your completely right!

The Metroid-Vania formula is stale as hell and now every other indie uses that formula.

I would like a traditional 2.5D Castlevania done right! Not the mess MoF HD was. Simon's Quest Remake?

eyeDEVOUR4146d ago

simons quest was a badass game.
what a horrble night to have a curse.

i think fromsoftware could make a badass castlevania game.

BootHammer4146d ago

That would be right up their ally for sure. Everything from the art style, steep difficulty and crazy boss battles would no doubt be nailed by From Software.

XXXL4146d ago

Great point. I consider Bloodbourne my new Castlevania. The setting remiss me of old school vania

Darth Gamer4146d ago

That picture of the box art brought back some great memories. This is actually the first game I ever bought for my NES. I saved like crazy to buy the system and this game. Holy shit where has the time gone, now I'm 41. Lol

BootHammer4146d ago

I know what you mean, I still remember getting the original Zelda as a kid and being blown away. So many great memories from the NES era. I sure do miss the iconic box art and thick instruction manuals that accompanied each release.

optimus4146d ago (Edited 4146d ago )

@Darth gamer- You and i are not that far apart. Back in those days there wasn't a save feature to take advantage of and i paused the game to go to the corner store and my mother turned it off thinking i left it on by accident... D'oh!... Personally, i would like to see a hybrid of sorts of side scrolling and open world. Especially with today's technology it shouldn't be too hard.

Darth Gamer4146d ago

Funny that you say that because I was just having this conversation with my high school students yesterday. They asked me a gaming question and how I was so patient while playing them. Why I didn't get angry while playing them like they said most kids of today do. My answer was that when I grew up, The games I played were so much harder than the games we all play now. The games didn't have a save spot every 5 minutes or checkpoints everywhere. We died and died and died so many times only to start back at the beginning every time and we would try it another hundred times till we got it right. I get upset at my own children when they get stuck at a part in a game and after 2 tries, they go to YouTube and look for the solution. So sad. Frustrated I might be for a bit, but I still find myself trying again and again and again till I pass my hurdle where most give up. Just how we grew up I guess. Lol

optimus4146d ago

You should tell them about early technology, and how control pads were big joysticks with 1 button back then (atari), and how a spiderman game consisted of a variation of 1 building and 1 villain and a blocky spiderman swinging side to side to climb the building and how that was considered a hit game...kids today are extremely spoiled with today's games...but that's for a different article. ;)

eyeDEVOUR4146d ago

Did you ever play a game called "8 eyes"? it was damn good and alot like castlevania.

Darth Gamer4146d ago

No, actually I've never even heard of that one. Was it for the PC or console? I have only ever been a console gamer except for the good old arcade way back in the day. :)

8 Best Horror Game Remakes

If you're going to relive a nightmare, you might as well do it right.

One thing that's been prevalent now more than ever is video game remakes. Dormant series like Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, and System Shock aren't first getting brand-new sequels but remakes of the classic entries. Horror titles are no exception, with the recent Resident Evil, Dead Space, and Silent Hill remakes.

Putting aside whether these remakes are necessary, most of them are excellent. They can expand and enrich the world with added details, improve gameplay mechanics, or put more focus on the story. Standard remakes will count, but story remakes or reimaginings will also be included.

If Castlevania is there as an Horror Game then Demon's Souls should be there as well.

Also, you might want to add Shadow of the Colossus there too. Where you play as a mass murdering genocidal maniac on a warpath.

Absolutely.

The same applies for Contra 1-3.

I still play it once in a while, timeless classic

Still get hyped in the very first level when that music slowly intros and kicks off.
