Microsoft Preparing For The Xbox One Slim?

It seems that Microsoft may be preparing to give the Xbox One a much needed makeover.

Matter of opinion really, some think it's a bit too chubby. Slimmer can't hurt, might even bring the price down.

Double Toasted4148d ago

Its that size for a reason, most notably the overclocking, tweaks and updates, preventing overheating. I suspect more of this through its lifespan, so better safe than sorry.

chrish19904148d ago (Edited 4148d ago )

Hmmm, true I suppose. Personally I still think they'll manage to cut the size down a little bit, or at least give it a redesign that doesn't look so brick-like, though I actually dont mind the clean-cut corners.

G20WLY4148d ago

New Year resolution: lose weight!

Xbox is a fatty and I'm sure they'll make a great job of losing inches and pounds. They should be able to improve the profit margin too, which may help them launch it with a sizable price drop...

We can only hope, wait and see. :)

PONTIAC08G8GT4148d ago

Idk about you guys but my X1 stays put 365 days a year. Fits in my entertainment unit just fine. A slimmer version is sure to come. Look how many make overs the 360 went through. The PS3 went through the same thing.

Gazondaily4148d ago

Much needed for sure. I hate how big and bulky the damn thing is.

PeaSFor4148d ago

the thing will probably still be bigger than the ps4 and still have a tumor attached to it(dat powerbrick)

nitus104147d ago

Personally the XB1 looks like a 1980's VCR and could do with loosing a bit of the flab :-)

Reducing the size of the XB1 is really just a design engineering job which really should not be that difficult. It would be possible to even put in an internal power supply, after-all Sony has been doing it with all their PlayStation's (there was a special exception).

What Microsoft realises is they cannot change the specs of the so called slimmer XB1 or risk the wrath of their loyal customers.

Before anyone mentions Sony did change their PS3 specs. Sony never changed their PS3 specs although they did not provide some features in later releases of the PS3 compared to the first release PS3's. The only feature that Sony did remove from machines that had it was the OtherOS which was an optional choice anyway.

Anyway this is just a rumour at the moment although it will definitely happen but when?

Alsybub4147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

@Double Toasted

Although it is, indeed, that size for many reasons, including those that you mention; if MS has reduced the nm of the processors then it will use less power and in turn produce less heat, which would allow them to have a smaller housing with less cooling.

@nitus10

Sony did remove more than OtherOS from PS3. They removed two usb ports, the card readers and PS2 backwards compatibility. As far as PS3 performance though, that was never changed.

nowitzki20044147d ago

I might think of getting a slimmer one. I have a dish receiver that looks like the Xbox one.

Receiver http://pimages.solidsignal....

Xbox One http://dri1.img.digitalrive...

AndrewLB4147d ago

Funny how none of the usual suspects complained about the massive size of the PS3, which was larger than the Xbone FYI.

Arnon4141d ago (Edited 4141d ago )

@AndrewLB

Probably because what you're mentioning has nothing to do with this article and is a "tu quoque".

X1 Slim for 300€ next E3... and I'm in.

THamm4148d ago

I was fixin to say the same exact thing. I just prefer the controller

mixelon4148d ago

It is too big.

I mean, literally, it's physically a lot bigger than the console sized holes in a lot of people's media centre/furniture, haha. Mine included. I can't actually buy one until it shrinks significantly. XD

kstap334148d ago

Its a standard size that was designed to fit standard cabinets and blend in with other Av equipment.

UnHoly_One4148d ago

People are actually saying now that it is too big to fit into an entertainment center? Give me a break, it's almost exactly the same size as the PS3 and 360 were when they launched, and entertainment centers use the same standard sized spaces now that they did when those launched, and for 20 years prior to that.

If you can't fit an XB1, then I assume you also don't have a surround receiver because those things dwarf the XB1.

traumadisaster4148d ago

So your "media center" can't fit an AV receiver? Which is the heart OF a "media center."

Gunstar754148d ago

Really??? Anyone with an AV receiver will not be at all phased by the size of the XB1 !

Pogmathoin4148d ago

Logic gone out the window here... X1 is perfect compliment to any audio/video equipment. I hate the fact that there is no standard size.

mixelon4148d ago

Umm, right. I think I know my furniture better than random internet people. XD

There isn't one size fits all space for an AV unit or consoles. My setup, and MANY others has a massive space for your amp/whatever (which has been filled with my huge surround amp) and smaller seperate spaces for things like consoles. The OG PS3 wouldn't fit in it either, I had to keep it upright to the side. Luckily they shrunk it.. Just like they will with the X1. Which *can't* be kept vertical, so where would it go? That's the issue, in my case.

What does fit in the space? The slim 360, original slim PS3, OG PS2, ps4 - all approx the same size width-ways. X1 doesn't come close to fitting.

I'm not saying it doesn't fit in anyone's furniture, just that there are cases where it doesn't, and it's inflexible in its space needs. = too big.

PONTIAC08G8GT4148d ago

Are you using an entertainment center for a dorm room? Any normal entertainment unit has shelves and notches you can adjust. Idk anyone who's ever had an issue with their X1 and their entertainment unit. Mine alone holds a blu ray player, cable box, X360, X1, and all my games and DVD's and a 70 inch tv sits on top of it.

Clown_Syndr0me4148d ago

If your console hole is smaller than the Xbox One then it's far too small for any console. They all need breathing room.

mixelon4148d ago

Clown_syndrome nah, there's space around all the consoles and particularly at the back, it's only the width that's an issue.

The only console I've had with heat issues was my old fat YLODing PS3. The one that never even fit in the spaces. :) They all have enough breathing room.

Muzikguy4147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

That's a crazy excuse. There's always room somewhere. I have my receiver sitting on top of a speaker for crying out loud :)

Edit: @trauma
That's probably not the case with mixelon but I know a hell of a lot of people that don't have a receiver. I don't know how you can game or watch movies without one! And I'm not talking about those cheap ass ones from Walmart either that come with all the speakers for $300.

mixelon4147d ago

Muzikguy - I could make space somehow (messily) but I'll just wait for the inevitable shrinking. That's all im saying, it'll pay off for me to get a smaller model. :D and it'll be a lot easier for people to integrate into their setups once it's smaller.

I agree though, a good (preferably surround) system is important.

meatnormous4147d ago

The xbone vents through the top. I wouldn't put it in a cabinet because of that.

4147d ago
Alsybub4147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

There are cabinets that don't fit an AV receiver, in fact, that's the case with many of them and it can be a bit of a mine field when buying one to make sure that a receiver will fit. A lot of them either don't have a slot large enough but most of the time the whole unit isn't deep enough. I found this recently when buying a new unit for myself. Most IKEA cabinets are particularly shallow if you want to put an AV receiver in them.

While I do find it surprising that a cabinet wouldn't fit an X1 I'm not going to doubt that someone may have one that it won't. Although, that would probably mean they couldn't fit the original PS3 or Xbox either.

@meatnormous

"The xbone vents through the top. I wouldn't put it in a cabinet because of that."

The PS4 vents through the back and most cabinets are enclosed at the rear. I don't get your point.

At least with the X1 pushing the air upwards it gives it a chance to flow out to the front opening of the cabinet, maybe that's why I had to take the back off of my cabinet when I got my PS4, due to the fans ramping up like a jet engine when pushing the hot air into an enclosed space. I never had that problem with my X1, it stays virtually silent all of the time.

I could tell there was a big difference because when I put my hand to the back of the cabinet, behind the X1, it was cool but behind the PS4 the heat was like a hair dryer. As I said though, with the back off of my unit the PS4 is fine but I would say from that experience that the PS4 actually needs more ventilation than the X1. Not surprising when so much is squeezed into a tiny space, including the PSU.

showtimefolks4148d ago

i don't mind the big system, kind of remind me of old school. so i am keeping mine as is. Also usually with slimmer models you have heat up issues among other things

RedDevils4147d ago

It remind me of my old VCR lol

Aceman184148d ago

They better design another system with a smaller form factor it's the only way I'll purchase an X1.

As of right now it's ugly size and look is what keeps me from actually plunking down my hard earned cash. Plus I'm looking for more interesting exclusives like say quantum break to make my decision easier.

NuggetsOfGod4147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

Yes who cares if the games are good?
Form factor of the year award is what gamers should look at.

all I want of ps4 is bloodbourne.
The order looks like a qte orgy.
No mans sky I could get on pc but star citizen is were its at.
Mkx looks better than Sf5(sand bag characters).
Uncharted same old same old with better tech.
Deep down dragon looks awsome but gameplay ugh. And it's f2p from capcom.
Ps4 gamers pay $20/month for backwards compatibility lol

For the mosy part multi plats are the best games like mgs5 and dragon age,
witcher 3, deus ex universe(can't wait), the division etc..
Sony exclusives so far are about 1080p and grfx by any means necessary.

So far I think I want wiiu to be my first of the "next gen" consoles.

I haven't played a ninty console in awhile but having the highest rated exclusives + 1080p 60fps instead of pushing graphics entices me.

It's ironic how insomniac fell of for the past few years then bam amazing goty contender for xbox lol

Heres hoping quantum and tomb raider comes to pc!

Pc/wiiu seems to be the only platforms with proper performance.

Also it seems ps4 power willbbe less then phones in 2 years lol.
Tegra x1 = 1.1 teraflops xb1 = 1.23 teraflops ps4 = 1.8 teraflops
Smh

BG115794148d ago

Needed to reduce the production cost and maintain the 350$ price tag... Much needed indeed!!

jrshankill4148d ago

agreed Double Toasted. The amount of ventilation in the Xbox makes me smile.

Muzikguy4147d ago

Wouldn't a slimmer console make the power brick loon bigger?? /s

Seems fast to be doing this, but it's never to early to prepare!!

Sashamaz4147d ago

Ironically size is one of if not THE reason I am not buying, when the slim comes I'll gladly get one but for now I'll wait, as shallow as it may seem, I do care about aesthetics.

solidt124147d ago

I got a PS4 at launch and decided that I would wait for the Xbox One slim and a price drop. If they do both I'll buy one. The launch Xbox One is huge.

RosweeSon4147d ago

And over priced for what it currently is but yeah slim line model and a new price point wirh a game or 2 and maybe even a free Kinect £300 or less otherwise I'm not interested.. Again, no rush and I'm not paying over the odds for it especially if this inevitable slim line model comes out they all do it blame sega and their master systems 1-2 and 3 (yes 3 in Brazil) and mega drive one and 2 and ps1 and PsOne... Gameboy and Gameboy light, original xbox and the S model controller once they'd slimed it all down all companies do it and I'd bet my ps4 that each and every console will do it again, excluding possibly the wii U but then they re-released the Wii when it was at 99 million units sold and on its way out so stranger things have happened but it's an absolute certainty there will be a slim xbox one followed by a slim ps4... Prob won't see the slim ps4 until e3 2016 earliest tho why would they bother already cheaper and selling a ridiculous amount not only that ps4 is pretty slick and slim already but yeah there will be slim line models without a doubt, will it solve the console war problems no the games and exclusives will decide that.

hkgamer4147d ago

not much needed, but i believe it was designed so that a slimmer model can be released after 18months. im guessing an e3 reveal like they did before.

kassler4148d ago

We all know there will be a PS4 slim. Maybe MS is trying to beat them to it, so they wont be further behind. Remember the success of the PS3 slim.

Walker4148d ago

It's better be slimmer than X360 slim . X360 slim was more fat than the original lol :D

MeliMel4148d ago

The Xbox One will probably be the size of a Xbox360 Slim.

THamm4148d ago

The 360 slim was the best all around, the thing was a dream compared to original and og ps3

mochachino4148d ago (Edited 4148d ago )

The most important thing is that it runs reliably, quietly and dissipates heat well. I wish my PS4 was bigger sometimes or had a separate a power brick. Sometimes the fan gets pretty loud, strangely mostly during in-game menus though, not during gameplay.

I wouldn't care if my PS4 was as big as an A/V Receiver if it meant I could keep it running games 24/7 for 10 years with no problems.

So xone owners be happy that your console is designed for longevity and function over form.

PCGamingNoobs4148d ago

because xbox consoles are well known for longevity..right?

i actually have the opposite from you, i find my xbox louder than my ps4, and i barely touch my xbox. i must say though the xboxs biggest irritation is the constant buzzing when shut down if its not on the power saving mode, but when in power saving mode you can't use the kinect on features and auto downloads. shame

Charybdis4148d ago (Edited 4148d ago )

Not sure but you might want to check out one of the many videos which showcase how the x1 isnt supposed to sound, you might also need to call customer support

mochachino4148d ago (Edited 4148d ago )

After 5 broken 360s I say in a general sense no, but XONE was designed to be on constantly due its initial TV focus and it is a very quit console that seems built to last.

Anyways, my PS4 is quiet 90% of the time, it just that it gets loud during some games (ones with unlocked framerates it seems like Infamous) and oddly briefly turns into a jet engine during some in game menus. But I suspect some in game menus probably also have unlocked framerates. But again, most of the time it's as quiet as a mouse, typically with games locked at 30FPS. Would have been nice if it never got loud however.

Also, not sure if the design makes over-clocking more difficult if it's already getting hot enough to ramp up the fans...it makes me wonder if that's why Sony hasn't done it already.

MeliMel4148d ago (Edited 4148d ago )

Man I was wondering the whole time what that buzzimg noise was when it was off. So if I turn on power saving mode that noise will go away? I dont have the internet or Kinect so auto dll and Kinect features won't be a problem.

Btw, had the opposite of you. My Xbox One was more quiet than my PS4 but not by much. I did notice however that the PS4 does get hotter than the One.

Hard to see how Sony get a slim. The PS4 is already small.

Funantic14148d ago

You said that like I didn't have to buy 3 PS2's because they kept malfunctioning with disk read errors.

marlinfan104148d ago (Edited 4148d ago )

The ps4 sounds like a jet engine compared to the xbox when running, you may want to get yours checked out if it's loud

lemoncake4148d ago

My original X1 made a horrible scratching buzzing noise making it alot louder than my ps4, got it replaced and it is now considerably quieter.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 4148d ago
mixelon4148d ago

.. It's definitely going to shrink at some point. That's inevitable. Possibly with a component shrink, so it shouldn't affect things like heat or longevity.

BlackTar1874148d ago

Mocho,

Weird yea my PS4 only gets loud during Farcry 4 menus. The only time i've ever really heard it and it was super super loud. Now i go into the menu and do whatever i need to real quick. Super weird that out of all the games i play it's the only one that does it and i hate it.

mochachino4148d ago

Yeah, me too, I get the same thing with the Far Cry menus sometimes and the Dragon Age Inquisition menus as well.

So strange that the menus are more taxing than the actual game. My only theory is that the menus are unlocked framerates, as Infamous and Killzone made the fans run louder all game.

hkgamer4147d ago

my ps4 is pretty silent, but i dont really play disc based game. maybe that would be different.

i cant imagine the xbone being that silent since all my ms consoles have been pretty loud.

but if you loved through the dreamcast era then it doesnt really bother you.

Alsybub4147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

Trust me, the X1 is pretty much silent, even under load.

I own PS4, X1 and Wii U and the X1 is considerably quieter than the other two.

Am i the only one who thinks the Xbox one is a good size?

snookiegamer4147d ago

It's big, but you're not supposed to mobilize it. I feel like Microsoft initially designed it to resemble entertainment media boxes that do everything.

I don't mind the size, but I wouldn't look down on a slim model either. But please MS, make a redesign with an internal power supply unit.

There's absolutely no reason the power brick should be that big. Poor design IMO.

jznrpg4147d ago

I like to bring a console with me on trips , so size is important to some people.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio16d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing16d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit16d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing16d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay18d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn218d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn218d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown18d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay18d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay18d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac17d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger18d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300018d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde18d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde18d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_17d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
