Project Morpheus in 2015

With so little information on Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4 having been revealed last year, this is the device that seemingly has the most ground to cover heading into 2015. It’s clear that SCE is holding back on confirming a full consumer release and the hardware hasn’t seen any kind of updates since its March 2014 reveal. But if SCE really do intend on bringing the anticipated HMD to market then it’s time to commit. No more ‘maybes’; SCE needs to prove their dedication to VR and a desire to stand right alongside Oculus VR and the Oculus Rift as VR leaders in the new year.

If the Microsoft VR rumours are true, then it would be wise for Sony to show some really compelling stuff this year for Morpheus. Like announcements for some really significant third party developers on board making games for it, and maybe even a final form factor, a price and a release date, even if it's 2016.

Many games are already working towards it, officially and unofficialy. War Thunder is a great example. They already have head tracking and ability to look around cockpit and out the canopy by means of actual head movements.

if this thing is only $150 then it's going to be another half-ass attempt just so that they don't alienate the mainstream crowd. kind of like how cheap the tablet is on the wii u, great concept but pricing keeps it from being a nice product.

@moldybread
Considering Microsoft is selling a standalone kinect for $150, how do you figure a VR headset will be $150? Just asking.

MelvinTheGreat4149d ago

Sony should not release morpheus as an extra for ps4. The ps4 pretty much tops off at 1080p/60fps and if you want a good smooth VR experience you need a higher resolution while maintaining at least 60fps

mixelon4149d ago

I think Sony can pull it off, and i want to see morpheus on PS4 - but the core statement is correct. 75fps is fine, 60 is visibly not as good in VR. 1080p is definitely not ideal, as pixels are clearly visible.

- DK2 owner.

Volkama4149d ago (Edited 4149d ago )

But pixel gaps can be addressed with upscaling. It is an unfashionable term, but a very good fit for VR. A 4k screen processing a 1080p signal should give a nice final image without showing the individual pixels.

S2Killinit4144d ago (Edited 4144d ago )

I think they said something regarding the possibility of an external processor between the PS4, and the headset which would be able to do some of the burden of VR, leaving the PS4 to do its normal task of rendering the game. Although this was all they said about ot and it has not been mentioned since.

All and all, im pretty excited for VR.

xXDerickXx4149d ago

I was really excited with Sony's vr but since Microsoft is cooking something up I will wait until Microsoft will release there's. I think with the Kinect vr will be the best on the Xbox plus with dx12 we will see more pc games on Xbox so more pc games made for vr .

MeliMel4149d ago

Lol...i don't know about that. Morpheus is way ahead in development. Im guessing if you are going for VR. If you dont have the PC power to go with the Oculus Rift then Morpheus would be the other choice.

xXDerickXx4149d ago

It is but you can't just forget the possibilitys of Kinect and vr. I'm sure they are experimenting with Kinect and oculus right now. I just see more potential in MS vr then sonys vr.

mixelon4149d ago

Unless they have see through goggles, I don't see kinect helping in most cases. You don't want full body tracking if you're in a headset that stops you from being able to see.

It's VERY easy to lose balance if standing up using the Oculus Rift, or other headsets. I'd take two tactile motion tracked controllers over vague hand detection. Morpheus will already have full head tracking, so I'm not sure what kinect is going to bring to the table in terms of practical usable tech.

Spid3r64149d ago

Its easy...a small window from the Kinect Camera can do he trick..Microsoft Researh is working on the Kinect software https://www.youtube.com/wat... with the tactical motion tracked controllers you lose immersion because you need to hold those devices.

mixelon4149d ago

You don't lose immersion if you have to hold something considering in 90% of games *you're holding something*

Move wands or Hydras are a closer approximation to a sword or gun handle than thin air is.

I can see kinect being useful for immersion in some sort of "touch em up" or "point em up" or.. "click your fingers em up" genres that currently don't exist, but physical controllers still make a lot of sense to practical and tactile reasons.

TheLastColossus4149d ago

Just imagine Sony showing off the VR with a No Man's Sky gameplay at E3

RondoMachete4149d ago

I had a try with a friends Oculus Rift a few weeks ago and loved it so being a PS4 owner I'm hoping we get it some time this year because from what I saw it's the way to go into the future.

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2130d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
