Does Microsoft really care about PC gaming?

A few days ago, Xbox's Phil Spencer announces on Twitter that Microsoft is going to be talking about what's in store for Windows 10 and PC gaming. But we've heard it all before, haven't we? So leave it to The Outerhaven to document the false claims from Microsoft and what we think they need to do to regain the PC gamer faith in them.

Well, I'm sure at the very least, that they want DX to continue to be the standard for PC. But when it comes to gaming, Xbox will always be their focus, because thats the only place they can sell Live membership to play online. It just makes sense for them. In order to get people to subscribe they need to have a platform like Xbox. They do this by providing content for Xbox not available on PC.

Bigpappy4212d ago (Edited 4212d ago )

Duh! DX12 sounds like it will go a long way to insuring that PC gaming remains exciting. Even has Game seemingly rethinking has Linux box and OS plans.

But yes, M$ can support PS gaming this way, and still let Xbox be where they focus their unique exclusives. Don't need to publish on PC to support it.

Off topic: I make a lot of errors because I type looking at the keybrd and do not proof read my post. But I am not writing and article, just making quick comments.

This article is poorly written, and the writer seems to think M$ should give the same profile they have on X1 to the PC crowd. That would be such a stupid thing to do. You are asking them to give up the console and comeback to PC to compete with steam. The Xbox is a closed platform that nice profit off of everything connected and sold on it. PC is open and the only interest M$ really has, is keeping it going to sell the OS and Office.

theshonen88994212d ago

Microsoft has no reason to care about PC gaming. Steam is the dominant distribution platform which means Microsoft doesn't see a cent out of most PC games. Until Microsoft creates a true Steam competitor like Origin, they aren't making money off the platform.

Obviously I'd love to play Halo, Forza, or Sunset Overdrive on PC, but it certainly wouldn't make fiscal sense for Microsoft.

dcbronco4212d ago

I think people are forgetting Microsoft's code once across all platforms intentions. Windows 10 will, or should, bring tons of new games to both PC and Xbox. DX12 being the key to Microsoft making money from it. Microsoft's ability to offer customers a game that works on multiple platforms for one price is an advantage they have over others. Buying Nokia and designing Lumina phones that work seamlessly with PC and Xbox sets MS apart.

kevnb4212d ago (Edited 4212d ago )

Dx12 sounds like it could be an empty promise, but if people stop gaming on pc they are less likely to spend any money on windows.

dcbronco4212d ago

Microsoft could easily sell a limited edition version of everything for Xbox One that includes the ability to play it across any Windows 10 platform. People would pay $79.99 for that if it includes platform specific enhancements adding a different experience on each. The same on PC and Xbox with graphical differences and a phone based, tablet system. Eventually cloud computing will allow for an experience that even the best computer can't match and PC gamers will pay for Live. There will always be those that stick to the old way, but they need to realize that sort of ecosystem benefits them as well as more gamers are drawn in from different Windows platforms to explore what's out there. And some will stay. More eyes are better for everyone.

MS doesn't really care about PC gaming. This has been proven over and over again yhrough the years but why do people still think that they do? Just because they are talking about DX12 this and that?

The only reason for it is because DX12 comes with Windows 10 and instead caring for PC gaming, they just want to make sure people will want to upgrade to Windows 10 in droves!

Their gaming focua will always be on the XBOX brand. Period.

I view Microsoft withholding games from PC the same way I would view Nintendo refusing to release games on WiiU because they think it would compete with 3DS sales; complete and utter stupidity.

Of course, if Microsoft wants to miss out on all the sales they'd get by putting games out on their biggest platform (Windows) then by all means, they're welcome to do so. At the end of the day, it's their loss, and that's a tremendous amount of money they're throwing down the drain.

Steam alone has an install base of over 75 million users. The Xbox One might not ever come close to reaching even half of that. If Phil Spencer has any sense he'll start putting games on Steam.

Seafort4212d ago

Steam install base is over 100 million now :)

Ever since the Xbox was released MS abandoned the PC platform for their kids toy :)

It's their loss PC gaming is doing much better without them.

rainslacker4212d ago

They lose PC sales for their game software, but if Xbox games were available on PC, there would be little incentive to pick up an Xbox. MS doesn't make money off those thousands of third party games on PC because they don't control the distribution. But on the Xbox, they get their cut from the publisher for each copy sold.

miyamoto4212d ago (Edited 4212d ago )

M$? NO!
Valve? YES!

If M$ really cared about PC gaming for the last three decades it, with its wealth and resources it could have helped solved piracy in gaming like Sony did with the PS3's strict anti-piracy technology investment.

Instead Windows PC has remained open to all sorts of woes for game developers and publishers that held back PC from going mainstream and full domination of the consoles and the gaming industry as a whole.

Way to go MS! :P

DanzoSAMA4212d ago

No one care about PC, PS4 master race.

Wizard_King4212d ago

Enjoy hardware equivalent to a 3 year old note book and sub par games to match it.

radler4212d ago

The funny thing is notebook GPUs vastly outperform PS4 already. You can run the latest games like Far Cry 4 on ultra settings, 1440p and 60fps on a laptop GPU now.

And that's a game that's considered to be poorly optimized.

theshonen88994212d ago

@DanzoSAMA I don't understand how you can say "PS4 master race" and also have a Tomb Raider avatar.

Vegamyster4212d ago

@radler

I remember when the 360/PS3 came out and looking at laptops back then, even if you dished out 3k you would never get anything close to what a tower or console could achieve graphically. Now you can get sub 2k laptop with 970m SLI that actually beat out a desktop 980, that's very impressive for something so small.

I haven't touch my ps4 since the first two days of destiny and the next time i'll play a game on my ps4 is when bloodborne comes out long live ps4 master race cough..cough

tee_bag2424212d ago (Edited 4212d ago )

Derp derp... enjoying Tomb Raider then?
You do know PS4 really doesn't have much of a library to brag about right now don't you?

SniperControl4212d ago

Obviously 16 million PS4 owners do and so do around 750 million PC gamers.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio57d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing57d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9257d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit57d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing57d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9257d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay59d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn260d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers59d ago (Edited 59d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn259d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown59d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos59d ago (Edited 59d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay59d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay59d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac59d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger59d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300059d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde59d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood59d ago (Edited 59d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde59d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_58d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
