Ecco, Golden Axe hit Virtual Console

Seems we were a little premature in declaring Nintendo's latest Virtual Console release as a "slow-play" of their classic library. Two new Genesis games -- Ecco the Dolphin and Golden Axe -- are now available for download at 800 Wii points each.

I was playing some games and decided to look at the VC around midnight and saw Super Star Soldier. Just downloaded Ecco and Golden Ax. Downloads for all these games are pretty quick and very retro. Can't belive it's been so long since these games came out

Loved Ecco on Megadrive/Genesis. Diving out of the water was always a fun feeling, and the whole 'vibe' while playing/exploring was pretty chill and special.

Always hoped we'd get a proper 3D sequel with modern-tech water-graphics and physics. (Same wish for Wave Racer btw).

It was pretty chill until you get to the last 2 or 3 levels. My god Welcome to the Machine was brutal.

You can always play an emulated Ecco: Defender of the Future on Flycast, or if you have a real Dreamcast play it there.

This makes me smile. I hope that the game and especially the soundtrack keep the same relaxed vibe.

That is amazing news. Keep it level based or metroidvania but dont go the roguelike route and it should be good.

Now do Shining Force, the small but passionate fanbase wants a new game so badly.

That brings me back. I know I have a couple copies on Sega consoles but they’re in a box somewhere.
I may check out a new game if done well

Immediately thought of the El Dorado zombie dudes in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

Not necessarily a ‘horror’ moment, but I remember feeling really tense and anxious when the Flood were first introduced in the original Halo. I never felt more on edge or nervous in that whole game as that moment. I think it was the whole buildup that something terrible was coming but you didn’t know exactly what.

Another non-horror game that had me feeling it was Subnautica. The deep dark depths, and knowing that sea monsters were lurking nearby, had me jumping at every sound.

That scene where you first see them attack is pretty crazy!

I remember being scared of the Asylum level in the most recent Thief game from 2014.

Golden Axe is a great game I enjoyed it on the SMS, Genesis and in the arcade. Great game but it truly was a quarter eater back in the day. I wish Sega could get the rights to the arcade port of Moonwalker another great arcade game I enjoyed. Collect so many monkeys and become Robo Michael lol.
