"...its safe to say the gaming community has a an awful problem with harassment and trolling."

I think it's safe to say that the internet has a problem with harassment and trolling. Being safe behind the keyboard gives people the luxury of being complete d-bags.

But that doesn't excuse this behavior, unfortunately men and women need to know or expect when coming onto this here net that this type of behavior when going against a popular opinion or stating their opinion that won't be liked by fanboys is going to happen.

It's the threats that I take serious issues with. The whole "worse school shooting in America" comment against Anita when she was going to speak at some college is unacceptable even by d-bag standards.

This much pretty.. it's frustrating to see people link this to gaming as if to say it's exclusive to the gaming community when it's running rampant pretty much everywhere on the internet. It's getting so bad that even the "anti harassment" people like SJWs and radical feminists are essentially doing the same thing that they are speaking out against under a different guise. Sadly, until the governments start getting with the times and pass laws to effectively deal with the worst harassment offenders, it's just something we all have to deal with from time to time when using the internet.

jebabcock4195d ago

I honestly don't know of too many times government has passed laws and actually made something like this better. Better comes when people as a society realize there is no lasting merit to such action... Oh wait thanks to the blood thirsty media there is merit... You get tons of fame for either victimizing someone or playing the victim... So much money to be had as well...

freshslicepizza4195d ago

i imagine many of these people are just seeking attention. most are likely to harmless but there are those who are sick that will do things. so there is a safety concern even if its just a verbal threat.

anonymity is going to be slowly eroded over time. its not something i am supportive of but i know the reality of it. the rotten few always seem to ruin it for everyone.

mixelon4195d ago

I agree it happens across the internet at large, but this being our corner - this is the corner we should be concerned about cleaning up. The sports guys can be concerned with their house, the science and religion guys can be concerned with theirs. The music guys? Etc.

I feel we share a small amount of responsibility for safeguarding our own interests, and not letting aholes spoil it. That's what pissed me off about the "ah, it doesnt matter, its ubiquitous - better get used to it" attitude of people during the recent shenanigans. It doesn't have to be, we shouldn't defend and enable it. Regardless of who the trouble makers are.

Halo2ODST24195d ago

Maybe they would get less harrassment if they weren't offending people. Yes harassment does happen, but blaming problems on whole communities without Evidence will obviously lead to backlash.

jeeves864195d ago

Victim-blaming. Classy.

Halo2ODST24194d ago

@Jeeves86 , it's common sense, don't go around shouting the N word, why? Because that person will get their face beaten in, & its dammmnn offensive,

rainslacker4195d ago

I'm starting to think there needs to be a WWW2 implemented in the online space. This would be like the regular WWW, with the exception that it would be heavily moderated and censored for the people who feel the need to be protected on an ongoing basis because they lack common sense and the ability to not be offended over every little thing.

If given the choice, people can choose to participate in the overall discussion of what goes around on the internet by using the WWW that we know now, but have to put up with trolls and harassment(or criticism if you want to use the proper term of what happens more often than harassment), or they can go to the WWW2 to live in their own little echo chambers of horse-blinders attitudes of politically correct happy feeling rhetoric and offer nothing substantial to the majorities culture or society at large.

Both sides win, and no one gets hurt except the rhetoric pushing politicals that feel they need to invade others communities to push their own agenda for their own notoriety and financial gain.

jeeves864195d ago

....

"you're a stupid bitch and I'm going to cut you."

Yup, total criticism there.

rainslacker4194d ago

I was speaking more of the overall comments that are more criticism than harassment. What you quoted is more of a threat, and harassment is more of an ongoing thing.

Some people just take video way too serious.

She used to be a blogger at IGN right? I think I remember her. And IGN never protects his writers. If they were concerned about his writers they could just simply banned everyone that is harassing her, but they wont do that, because that could cost them hits and money.

I didn't realize that the Internet = the gaming community.
