Down with amiibos

Video games have many current trends right now, such as regenerating health, being released before they’re finished (Assassin’s Creed: Unity did a decent job at uniting everyone, while we make fun of its glitches), and sequels. Some are worse than others, but if there’s one trend that needs to die before it can come to power—Terminator style if you will—are those toys like the new amiibos and and not-so-new Skylander figures.

Wow, overreact much? If you really don't like the amiibo then don't buy them. It's not like they are essential to your gaming experience, and in most games they only unlock cosmetic things like costumes.
Hardly anything to get overly aggravated about.

Link and Toon Link unlock a weapon in Hyrule Warriors so yes they are essential if you want to experience everything in a game.

And don't pretend a weapon is not a major part of a Warriors game either.

I completely understand the author's view point here. They start with a costume here or a weapon there but then you get Street Fighter X Tekken.

That makes sense if you think they cut content for just Amiibos. Nintendo has handled DLC/extra features the best because it's worth its value in entertainment and I rarely feel cheated after playing a whole game without them. Mk8 has 16 tracks for $13! Thats crazy value.

Nintendo has always relied on extra things to get the whole experience. GBA connection on Wind Waker and Animal Crossing, Pokemon trading and expansion pack on the N64 are all examples of this.

Not even, since unlike S-X-T, Amiibo's function across multiple titles for a one-time fee per figure.
If you get one Amiibo, chances are you're invested enough in Nintendo's games to have more than one that will use the figure, either now or in the future.
That means you're getting your money's worth many times over.

As for the Spinner, it's not an essential.
There's at least two more dlc packs to go, and each one adds more content without Amiibo's. Enough so that you won't miss out on anything game-changing if you don't get the Spinner.
You're blowing this up into a bigger issue than it actually is, while ignoring the fact that it gives more value than a normal piece of dlc due to its connectivity with more than one title.

Are they in stores now?

I have a WiiU and a 3DS, both of which I believe have Amiibo functionality, but I don't care one whit about that. I just want to have some cool Nintendo-themed collectibles to display. Link, Zelda and DK will look fantastic under my Macross and Gundam models, if I can find room behind all of the LoGH ships I've got.

I think it is cool. Dlc that is physical and polymorphism in nature because it is not tied to one game. It is mostly a smash bro feature for now anyway. Why was skylander and infinity raged on about? Oh because this is Nintendo. People critical of toys must feel pretty bad that video games are sold at toys stores everywhere.

Man did you step on one of these and hurt your feet?

I want Starfox, Samus, Megaman, and Link just for collectibles. I'm looking to buy a WiiU next month, and then maybe I'd use them in game as well. I think it's genius on Nintendo's part, looking at the all of their recognizable characters, and Skylanders' success.

These are an interesting concept. They are like DLC that you (hopefully) only buy once. Mariokart and SSB are the perfect platforms for these dinky little toys. This could be a boon for Nintendo.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.
