The Psvita hands down, followed by the 3ds, although in my gaming heart, they are equals, love the tech of the Vita, love the games for the 3ds.

Hard to compare. I love both the 3DS and the Vita. Currently rocking some FFX and P4G on Vita and a little OlliOlli. While I am playing LoZ and Luigi's mansion on 3DS. So defintely a win-win to own both.

I own both the Vita & 3DS.

* 3DS has a better and wider variety of games to play.

* Vita, with certain games, is a superior gaming experience, simply because of the screen and specs.

3DS has more games that for me, were fun to play, but Vita definitely has better sports games BY FAR!.

Both are awesome though.

Overall Id say the Vita wins. Now if you want to go specifically on game library then it would go to the 3DS, however if you want to go on hardware and design then it looks like the Shield Portable wins that round.

Hardware and design is obviously in favor of Vita, but I play games, so I would have to say 3DS because the library is the most important thing to consider.

I think Sony's support of the system has been lacking, and without the games to differentiate it, it's hard to justify the purchase for many families versus a tablet, etc. I would assume that's why the sales lean in favor of the 3DS.

The problem with the Vita is that too many people expect AAA games out of the handheld system, instead of looking at fun games that are in simple 3D or even 2D/3D-ish. There are tons of great games for the Vita however they cater more to the 13+ crowd, wereas the 3DS caters to the 13- crowd.

In my opinion the Vita slightly edges out the 3DS, mainly because the hardware is better. I personally have a really hard time choosing which one has a better library.

3DS, quite easily.

A system is defined by its games, not technical specs.

The 3DS has more games, higher quality games, and more support than any other handheld platform.

Agreed. I'm not sure why people are buying the Vita for just specs. It seems like a waste of money. Why buy a game console/handheld, just for the specs and not play it?

The 3ds wins easily with its games, and it is the games that matter, not specs.

If I was just going for Specs each time, I wouldn't even buy a console, since PC master...

And the 6 AA batteries needed. For 3 hour gaming. Uuuuhh...Hard times. I remember sitting under a table to play while having it attached to an adapter.

3DS, they have the better selection of games and support. Not to mention that huge back catalog of DS games you can still play.

Nintendo is the last dev that actually supports BC and god bless them for that.

Although not all titles are available, the Vita does have backwards compatibility in the form of download PSP and PS1 games. TBH, making the Vita backwards compatible with the PSP's physical media would have probably done more harm than good as it would require adding a disk reader to the system. That being said, Nintendo should be applauded for keeping the 3DS's physical media similar enough to that of the DS that physical backwards compatibility is possible.

I've recently been considering a Shield. It's currently the same price as Vita.
It can successfully emulate all of the great classic consoles, as well as PSP and Dreamcast, and since it runs android, you have access to emulators that get regularly updated.
You can also play games like Half-Life 2 and San Andreas on it, and stream games from PC. It has a 720p screen which stays protected with the clamshell design. You get a proper dual analog controller.

I play on the train. If it only srreams I absolutely can not see any value at all to me

Ah I see its android based too, I see some value :)

Still prefer the vita as its way handier

I'd say the Vita, but that's just me.

I like it's library more than the 3DS, but again. It is personal preference and the 3DS also has great games.

Tried the Shield, thought it was cool, but because it streams, it always needs an internet connection, which bothers me and the games that are on there remind me of PC games, which in the long run makes me just wish I had a PC instead.

While I agree that the 3DS is not all hype, I also don't think it is a clear as you make it out to be that the 3DS has a better lineup. When it comes down to it, which system has better games is completely a matter of opinion. For example, one of my favorite types of games sandbox building games like Minecraft and Terraria. In the case of this genre, I think the Vita clearly beats the 3DS. Similarly, I think the 3DS has a much better selection of turn-based RPGs. It really just depends on what a person likes.

I think it's pretty clear. Exclusives are usually what separates one system from another. And the games you mentioned are multiplat that can be found on Shield and mobile platforms.

And when I said better "line-up" that's what I meant. Not one paticular genre over another, or someones tastes over someone elses.

I said better lineup: What are the games, how diverse are they, and how much quality is there.

If you compare game for game release since 2011, its clear the 3DS has a better lineup from gamer's perspective. Not someone who likes OPEN world games more than other types of games, but from the perspective of quality exclusives across multiple genre.

Sony barely makes games for the Vita anymore. That says something.

I think we are just going to have to agree to disagree. While is is disappointing that Sony doesn't make more first party games for the Vita, that shouldn't take away from the plethora of third party game available, or from the quality of the few Vita games that Sony has made.

In my opinion, these titles are enough to make the Vita's line just as diverse as the 3DS library, especially when one considers all of the indie titles available. Granted, the 3DS may have more titles, but that doesn't necessarily mean it has more diversity.

Also, while I understand your argument that exclusives are what separates systems (not that I fully agree with it), I think it is flawed in that the system you are saying offers more diversity lacks most of these "multi-platform" titles. For example, if we are discussing if the Vita of 3DS has a better library, why should we ignore titles like Terraria, Minecraft, Mortal Kombat, and Borderlands 2? The fact that they are on multiple systems is essentially irrelevant to the discussion if they aren't on the 3DS.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I think the Vita has a better library than the 3DS; I think they both have their strong points, as well as their weaknesses. As I said before, I think it ultimately just comes down to a matter of opinion. Different people can have completely different opinions of what makes a library better or worse. Since it's personal preference, nobody is wrong.

Its not that I'm ignoring the games you mentioned, the problem comes that the ones you mentioned are inferior on the Vita compared to other platforms.

For example, Borderlands 2. That's a serverly stripped down port that runs in a horrible framerate. I wouldn't exactly call that a quality experience.

As far as indie games go, The 3DS has those as well, and exclusive ones like Azure Striker Gunvolt and Shovel Knight (handheld exlusive)

So for every indie game you mention on the Vita, I can name a indie game the 3DS has that is just as good or better.

So really what it comes down to is quality and quanity of exclusives. And that's where there is no arguing. Nintendo puts out more quality excluisves than Sony. Pokemon, Monster Hunter, Yokai Watch, Bravely Default, ect are just games you can't find anywhere else BUT the 3DS.

3DS. Vita comes second and third is Android which can work great for emulating granted you have the processing power... oh, and a controller is a must if emulating anything else than turn-based games...atleast IMO.

Don't dismiss Android, it really gets some gems around: Just today Banner Saga, but also Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale Enhanded Editions, Shadowrun RPG, Modern Combat 5, Telltale Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us, Dragon Quest VIII, Thomas was alone, Minecraft, GTA games, and so on. Add lots of fantastic emus even Nintendo DS, PSP, Dreamcast, dos games, even some old OpenGL games like Jedi Knight games or Doom III, and vs all other handhelds, it's still a phone and so much more.

Does the PS Vita still need memory cards to play games? Bit of a hardware limitation right there...

Fire Emblem: Awakening is one of the best handheld experiences I've had since Links Awakening on the GameBoy Color (which you can also get on the 3DS)

3DS for me is the best handheld system for gaming, but I can understand the appeal in PS Vita.
