Performance Analysis: Grand Theft Auto 5 - Digital Foundry

Eurogamer:
"The 18th of November came a little early for Digital Foundry, allowing us to bring you this performance analysis of GTA 5 on Xbox One, along with some initial impressions about this brand new remaster. Living up to its word, Rockstar has indeed delivered a native 1080p release, and it adheres pretty closely to its target 30fps - a far cry from stuttering last-gen versions. The game's many enhancements are varied and worthwhile - however, our first impressions suggest an expertly crafted remaster with some lovely features, as opposed to a top to bottom revamp designed to exploit the capabilities of the new consoles."

"the stark resolution increase highlights the lower poly counts though, and while the lighting model remains frequently stunning, it's not really on par with the materials-based lighting seen in next-gen engines"

"viewing the assets up close and personal in first-person mode practically demands the upgrade Rockstar has implemented here. The only minus point is that it also serves to emphasis that texture filtering isn't great (a common complaint with many PS4 and Xbox One titles), with ground art becoming very fuzzy not too far in front of the player."

"Technologically, the game demonstrates its last-gen roots quite clearly, but the quality of the original work still stands up overall."

And to think some people were claiming this remaster of a last gen game (albeit an impressive last gen game) was going to crush most new gen games in terms of graphics. It's a lovely remaster, but many elements of its graphical makeup are never going to compare to the better pure current-gen games. We do still need to see the PS4 version, though. Early reports seem to indicate it's pretty similar, but it will be interesting to see deeper analysis. In any case, it's nice the game got upgraded for current gen consoles.

Lets be honest, GTA has never gave the best graphical games a run for their money. With it's huge size, it would be impossible to compete in this department while maintaining a steady frame rate.

DARK WITNESS4213d ago

And lets be honest, the best graphical games could never give GTA a run for their money when it comes to actually having a well populated, dynamic sandbox world. Not to mention great physics, variety of NPC models, traffic, weather....

I mean to be quite frank, none of the next gen games have matched GTA in terms of simply creating a detailed sandbox world that really feels alive... none!

Sure they are "Amazing" graphically when they have nice tight corridors to look at and not much else to worry about apart from 5 or 10 npc's at a time. When they have tried to push anything more then that they seem to always end up a technical mess of bugs and glitches.

Given what R* were able to push out on 512 of Ram and how much they were able to brush that up, not to mention add a whole FPS mode complete with matching animations etc.... the real question is what will they do when they build a GTA from the ground up for next gen systems...

infact knowing R* I would not be supprised if we see a complete overhaul of the Rage engine to go with the next GTA.

Solid framerate! Great job rockstar!

higgins784213d ago

No, not solid...dips. My main gripe however with this version is it still being 30fps - max. Having played GTAV already for the PS3 I found the frame rate - while not game breaking - frustrating. Seems the story of this gen (thus far) for Xbox One/PS4 owners (myself, the latter) is double the 'power' without the knack to take advantage of it properly. I also own a Wii U. IF this gen were about the games alone, trust me, Nintendo should be leading in sales.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Sony via its PS4 will soon offer some great exclusives - the reason I bought a PS4 and owned previously a PS3, 2 and 1, but at this moment and in the near future...

Smash incoming and Mario Kart with new DLC shall taking up my TV this Christmas.

mkis0074213d ago

gta 5 on last gen did not adhere to the 30fps much though. actually sticking to 30 is welcome news.

MasterCornholio4213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

Mine arrives Friday, hopefully....

I can't wait to play this on my PS4.

PlayStation Store’s top downloads of 2025

O'Dell Harmon Jr. writes: "Before we say goodbye to 2025, let’s take a look back and see what were the most downloaded games of the year. It was a great time for sports, shooters, and some new PlayStation VR2 games. Sports favorites topped the charts in US/Canada and EU, with NBA 2K26 and EA Sports FC26, respectively.

Juggernaut GTA V found a home in the top three for both regions, with new 2025 release Battlefield 6 claiming second place in the US. Fortnite took top place for free-to-play games, and Beat Saber continues its PS VR2 success."

FH5 4th in Europe compared to North America 14th. Not surprising.

LucasRuinedChildhood137d ago

I think it shows how shortsighted it was for Sony to let go of Evolution and not get them to make some sort of competitor (open world Driveclub?) 10 years ago.

bionicstar137d ago (Edited 137d ago )

its a hard bet to make. hindsight is always 20/20.

Christopher137d ago

After Driveclub's reception, hard to say it would have done well enough to compete. It's easy to dream of such a thing, but to make it happen? It's taken how long for CoD to be dethroned? And it was dethroned by Hogwart's Legacy and has gained it right back just the next year.

It’s funny to watch the only games EU and USA agree on was Minecraft and back ops 7 both regions on 6 and 7 spot respectively other than that FIFA rules EU

gold_drake137d ago

yeh, football is really popular here in europe ha

I would like to see a list that has both free to play and paid games together, but at least we have this.

To this day GTA5 is a top downloaded game and it makes me wonder if the industry is really ready for GTA6. I imagine almost nothing else will sell during that game's release window.

I’ve never played Fortnite GTAV or CoD BO7 but I do own GTAV for PS4/5 because I got them cheap.

gold_drake145d ago

i think we should either take those games out, or make a singleplayer list too ha

badboyz09145d ago

I still play gta V alot. The others nah.

Popsicle145d ago

This is why we can’t have nice things.

Tacoboto145d ago

What exactly are we not getting?

Did we not just have a 2025 filled with nice games like...

Silksong, Doom TDA, Expedition 33, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Ghost of Yotei, Dispatch, Split Fiction, Hades 2, DK Bananza, and so many more?

Popsicle145d ago

Agree that all you just posted are great games. Expedition 33 is one of my favorites. Spent a large chunk of time on BG3 in 2023. Another for my all-time list.

My point though not well articulated in the OG post is that we would get more of the games of the quality you mentioned if so many valuable resources were not allocated to FTP slop and/or heavy monetization schemes. Some of what used to be my favorite franchises have been ruined by them.

To sum it up, I would like to see games like 33 outperform the profits made by games like Fortnite so more resources are allocated to great games. When heavily monetized FTP games are at the top of the list, we end up being stuck with a significant chunk of games that are not good. Or worst case scenario games that spend years in development, but get cancelled due to industry trend chasing.

cloganart145d ago

Such a pessimistic view. This year gave so many good games.

Christopher145d ago

Popsicle, I actually think we're getting more great games because of the slop. Developers are seeing that people aren't happy and taking advantage of big AAA studios not delivering for people.

Popsicle145d ago (Edited 145d ago )

Perhaps, and I hope you’re right. A shift is needed IMO
