Sony's Layden: Harassment "completely unacceptable"

SCEA's boss speaks up against harassment and notes that Sony is "best in class" when it comes to women in games

Shawn Layden has the right idea. Rather than just making vague SJW statements that don't amount to anything, he is saying that it is important to hire women and have them working in the industry as in the long run this will aid equality and promote a more positive attitude to women. Sony have put their money where their mouth is, Shannon Studstill runs Santa Monica and Connie Booth heads San Mateo. More diverse teams will benefit everyone and mean anyone of any gender or ethnicity can find a place in the video game industry.

Insomnia_844254d ago

If I remember well, the very first Assassin's Creed last gen which was at first announced as a PS3 exclusive, was developed mostly by women. Ironically, AC:U has been very controversial for not including women in the game.

ifistbrowni4254d ago

?? A female character is by your side on almost every mission. Elise.

Sifting through N4G today, I see all this hate on AC:U.. It's so obvious how many people are judging the game without playing it. It's sad.

Spotie4254d ago

Thing is- and this is true of the tech industry, which has also come under fire for not having enough women- there aren't that many women entering the industry. It's a disparity, and trying to hire more women than there are proportionately in the work pool is actually the opposite of equality.

The same is true for gamers. I'm sorry, but if women were as large a part of the community as these studies claim, why don't we run into more of them? Why are there disproportionately more men gaming online? That's where all the complaints come from, after all.

Sorry, but I just don't buy it.

ShaunCameron4254d ago

It's simple. There aren't that many women that care about technology enough to apply themselves in making a career out of it in the first place, hence the low numbers. But in the minds of feminists and SJW's, there has to be a conspiracy to keep women out.

uth114254d ago

Women don't go into technology fields in large numbers. The number might be increasing, but they are still outnumbered by men. It's not the fault of the industry that that's the labor pool they have to pick from. I don't know if it's education, or how we raise our girls, or maybe *gasp* biological differences mean women in general don't have an interest. Who's to say?

I can tell you what it's not. It's not because of things like Shirtstorm or Donglegate or the other reasons the SJW types try to claim that keeps women out of tech fields.

rainslacker4253d ago

I don't believe the number of women equates to equality in any way in this regard. How they're treated within the company is much more important. If they are treated as employees with the same regard as their male counterparts then that's what equality means.

As far as the numbers go though, women traditionally haven't pursued a career in the technology field in great numbers, so there is just a vast disparity in the number of applications between men and women. While it's getting better, if you ever attend a college class in computer engineering/programming/etc you will see many more men than women, and I'd imagine in most companies that the same ratios would apply.

For the numbers to increase, the industries have to actively recruit women at a time when they are most impressionable to decide what their future choices would be. It'll get better now that programming and computers and even digital art is starting to become more prevalent in earlier forms of education than the college level, and in some cases even required for curriculum.

johndoe112114254d ago

I'm still trying to understand why the HELL people keep using #gamergate and harassment against women in the same bloody sentence. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

mkis0074254d ago

Once something is allowed to be associated with something else the damage is done. Microsofts early troubles this Gen are a pretty good analogy.

uth114254d ago

because if you want to harass women online, you obviously can't do it unless you conspire to create a hashtag, like #Gamergate. I mean really, what can that possibly stand for other than "harassing women"?

Isn't that obvious? Obvious to brain dead journalists maybe *eye roll*

Discrimination against those that can in favor of those that can't under the guise of giving them a leg-up.

"In the development group we have Shannon Studstill, who runs our whole Santa Monica operation. She's going to bring the next big franchise out from there."

So they're still working on a new IP...

SamPao4254d ago

Corey Barlog's game is a new IP as far as I know.
But I'm sure there are many other games in developement at Sony SantaMonica

ShinMaster4254d ago

Pretty much every Sony studio is currently working on PS4 games.

spacedelete4254d ago

why people want to play as women anyway ? gaming is a males pastime so stop trying to change the developers vision like wanting a woman character in GTA would be weird and stupid.

DoctorRedBeard4254d ago

i support #GamerGate you said its up to the developers but then also stated "gaming is a males pastime so stop trying to change the game developers vision"

While i agree that SJW should not interfere and change the game developers vision as its not there place to decide.

Gaming is pretty much for everyone regardless if a character is male or female.

the gender/sex of a character doesn't decide who the target audience is for. if anything decides the target audience is the ESRB or PEGI rating in europe.

As i said i support #GamerGate and video games are not sexists or violent or misogynistic. And gamers aren't that either. But too basically exclude all the females who game and just say out right "Gaming is a males pastime" is down right ignorant.

And you alone makes Gamers and GamerGate look bad. Its not that we don't want female characters in gaming. Its just that we don't want these feminists or SJW to dictate whats in the game or not. We want the game developers to decide there own game's design. We want game journalism to be honest and up front about what's going on in the industry. We don't want unethical journalism.

We support women in gaming. We support female characters in games. We condemn harassment. We are pro #GamerGate and #NotYourShield #OpSKYNET

Revengeance4254d ago (Edited 4254d ago )

Not sure if trolling or stupid (or both).

ShinMaster4254d ago (Edited 4254d ago )

I'm sure that's a troll comment.
But I've enjoyed playing games feature female characters since Metroid. Even in games where you create your own characters I sometimes play as a female avatar.

The best person for the job should get the job, nothing else should impact that, we are still stuck in a society where that is rarely the case.

ShaunCameron4254d ago

It's rarely the case because society has long drank the Marxist Kool-Aid with women being the poletariat and men being the bourgeoisie declared public enemy #1.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8575d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele74d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla74d ago (Edited 74d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk74d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay74d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

Athlon10175d ago (Edited 75d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit74d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg74d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10174d ago (Edited 74d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14974d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle87d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker88d ago (Edited 88d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit87d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog88d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_88d ago (Edited 88d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog88d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad88d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_88d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage88d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda87d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
