We Will Never Have a Smooth Online Launch Again

GeekParty's Jake Valentine: "Driveclub. Diablo III. The Elder Scrolls Online. SimCity. Halo: The Master Chief Collection. What do these games all have in common? Poor online launches.

Some have been worse than others, but the simple fact remains that they — as well as countless others — have had troubles launching their online services. It’s a bit ironic, considering that we’re making more and more technological advances each and every day. Why is it that we can accomplish the unthinkable, but we can’t get a game’s online service to run smoothly during launch?"

Sadly, I largely agree.

There is one omission here though: Destiny. Despite requiring an online infrastructure that dwarfs most of these games, the possible exception being TESO, its launch was damn smooth and I can't really recall having any persistent issue.

"what are you going to do with those extra servers when you don’t need them?"

you rent them.
If you own them, you can repurpose them for the next release if they are physical
or destroy them if they are VM.

I don't think getting physical servers is a problem. The bigger problem is when your code doesn't scale to the number of users, That's what seems to have happened to Driveclub, and maybe Halo MCC.

I actually welcome these issues.. ( I know I lost you but let me explain) with all these server issues it just goes to show that an on-line only approach is not ready for prime time and never will and these publishers and developers should still cater for the single player who wants to enjoy the games without having to connect to the internet to deal with all these issues.

so please let them keep failing the general public who only reads the " sensationalist" media will only see online game A is unplayable due to server issues

never say never. It's just a matter of trail and error. by then end of this gen we'll be seeing things we didnt think possible

Mikelarry4221d ago (Edited 4221d ago )

Yeah I got a bit carried away with never. it is just infuriating that majority of game publisher seems to be heading to the on-line only route and sometimes after a hard days work I just want to get home, press start and game without having to deal with server maintenance this or ddos hacker that

I agree with the top 3 comments but do the game people really care? they have their money.. it just seems to me that they keep getting fatter and fatter and we get the scraps, what happened to making a game without a "patch" or "update" at launch.

" what happened to making a game without a "patch" or "update" at launch"

those days are long gone, while i see the benefits it sometimes can be annoying when all you just want to do is peel the wrapper off, put your game in and just go. is it me or wasn't that one of the bullet points that was advertised when these consoles were originally revealed " instantly play your games at the touch of a button"

Some developers make games because they love games.

Spotie4221d ago

Well, to be fair, lots of games in the past had glitches and bugs in them. There was no way to patch those, so they were stuck as-is; we enjoyed those games anyway.

Now, development has become more complicated, and there's also this lovely tool called the internet that allows developers to still fix the game even after it's released. The downside is that same tool allows word of glitches and bugs to spread faster, meaning an issue is potentially made out to be a larger problem than it actually is.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not excusing poor development practices. I try to view it as a sign that devs aren't just in it for the money(though some certainly are) since they continue to fix a game after it's been released; this never happened in the past, though that's almost entirely due to the fact that it COULDN'T happen.

And to be sure, there are devs out there who release a game knowing full well it's not done, because they also know full well they can add the rest later. But I don't think that mentality makes up any significant number.

Publishers, on the other hand...
