Game Launch Problems in a Larger Perspective

Fatal Hero's Daniel Moran (a programmer & IT manager by day) opines about the serious issues seen this month alone in 3 major game launches and how some of the ongoing suggestions - just avoid the release day and/or boycott a company - aren't a realistic solution to the problem. A few suggestions are offered to both sides in the hope of trying to right this wrong and get started on it now.

Yeah yeah, games have been crappy at launch. Why the big site name at the start of the title, isn't that way on the site...

darthv724189d ago

Well, to be fair, there are broken games and there are broken elements outside of the games. People need to understand the difference.

One is the fault of the developer, the other is unknown where the fault lies. Crap happens and how quickly teams work to resolve the issues speaks much more than the problems itself.

People want to kick something when its down but dont really know why or how it got that way in the first place. Its the jumping to conclusions aspect they find the most entertaining.

I look at it from a package or project perspective. Before I move ANYTHING into implementation it undergoes an end-to-end test that should test all functionality as if it is in production. If they're doing these tests 90% of the issues we're seeing should have been caught and fixed. I lump a lot of the 10% like Destiny's KTO issues - ones which simply may have been too hard to catch during testing.

That's why I point my finger at whoever signed off on the project going to us, the customers. Someone didn't do their due diligence. In the case of Halo MCC I don't think that was a core dev issue.

Was told it had to be that way, will adjust it.

Fair look at the issue at hand. Maybe companies should invest in better QA

Avoid release day and or boycott company is a viable option for the consumer at this point

garwynn4189d ago

Avoiding release day as a sole action will tell publishers they can still take advantage of gamers, we'll pay and pay what they ask. What other software - or even hardware for that matter - would you ever let that slide?

I'm starting not to buy games at launch now

Dyldog694188d ago (Edited 4188d ago )

I won't pay and pay what "they ask for". I will buy on Amazon after post release problems are patched and save money on buying used. Let someone less savvy go thru the all too frequent growing pains of a title when buying new.
