Playbox Wii63

Dick Ward from XboxFocus.com writes:

"Could Sony be working on a 360? With the recent rumor (credit goes to EGM's Quartermann) that Microsoft will be allowing 3rd party manufacturers make Xbox 360 hardware, it's certainly a possibility. Keep in mind this is all speculation, but the idea behind this makes a lot of sense for Microsoft as well as other hardware companies.

Microsoft is a company that is truly built on the strength of its software, and it's easy to see why. Microsoft Game Studios is incredibly successful, and has a ridiculously good 2008 lineup. On the other hand, console sales are a bit of a wash. Consoles rarely, if ever, are money makers for the companies putting them out. In fact, in 2005, Microsoft was losing about $125 on each Xbox sold. While licensing and creating games is certainly a great source of income, hardware sales aren't.

It hardly makes sense to limit hardware creation to just one company, especially if others can do it better, and get more units in households. The "Red Ring of Death" fiasco that forced the company to extend Xbox 360 warranties to a full three years is proof enough that Microsoft might not be the best for the job in the first place. Taking a look at the three other gaming platforms reveals a great benefit for themselves and for Microsoft were this to take place."

GiantChicken? Didn't I see you at the "Giant Animals Conference" last year?

Take a look at my avatar do you recognize me? I think I was wearing a hat at the conference.

boogeyman9996528d ago

I was thinking something like this with the recent rumor about the 360 hardware being open for other developers. Should be interesting to see how they use it.

Tomdc6528d ago

They wouldn't let sony do it, nor would sony want to...

Real Gambler6528d ago

It's not even sure the 360 hardware is at a break even point yet. Even if it is, we would be talking one of the lowest profit margin ever on any electronic product.

It would only happen after about 5 years, but even then, having multiple manufacturer would mean price war, and sure enough, still low profit margin.

Keep dreaming on. But right now, every other electronic device being built will give you a much better profit. Not easy to make a decision when you have the choice between (no profit or very, very small profit) and other appliances that will give you a %30 profit margin, or more. Not one single other electronic device is sold at a lost like a console for a few years. Not one single other electronic device has such a small margin profit for it's whole life.

Sorry, won't happen.

Venomous Fire6528d ago

Nice, I hope its true, might open the door to companies not working the damndest to destroy the others and start working together

Dude I heard rumors about a "Playbox" like 3 years ago. EVERYONE was saying that.

If they made a console that could play both PS3 and 360 games... just WOW. That would be freaking intense.

It would have Sony's hardware reiablity and style and media functionality and Microsft's software programming and online work plus ALL Sony and Mcirsft first and Third party titles = OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG GGGGGG ORGASM.

You know the rumors about Microsft doing something "desperate" at E3....could this be it...would Sony even want to merge with Microsft?

FUK Nintendo...it should be Sony and Microsft..wow this would seriosuly be such a MASSIVE win for any gamer. What if its true? Microsft is already struggling and H3LL YEA Sony want Microsft on borad to help with Blu Ray and everything.

LMAFOOOOOOOOO if this happens. SERIOUSLY it would be the best thing to ever happen to video games. It would be set in stone. No one would EVER be able to challenge Sony and Microsoft together. And they are both the BEST at what they do.

PoSTedUP6528d ago

i agree but i still dont want it to happen thats when things become boring and less effort is put into everything plus people who own both console wouldn't need to buy it and there are alot of people with both of them so if they merge alot of people wouldn't need to buy the new console

-Maverick-6528d ago (Edited 6528d ago )

Bro if theres only one console...then the companies can afford to try more things... they only need to build one game!!

Trust me this would help every developer...Sony, Microsoft, you, me...everyone.

Think about it. It would probably still be called Playstation just becuase of the name....but it would have "Microsoft's Live" or whatever they came up withas a huge feature. I see them using Playstation considering how big the name is and just showing off that Microsft joined their online efforts and Halo will still be a Microsft game, etc.

You would be able to play God of WAR, Metal Gear Solid Final Fantasy, Gears of War, Halo, Killzone, Resistance, Doom, Half Life, Motorstorm, Ratchet, LBP, Banjo, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Jax and Daxter.

This generation is putting ALOT of strain on companies beucase he games are getting crazy to make, especially 2 versions...These 2 consoles are fighting and Microsft knows they will always get the short end of the stick...look at Blu Ray winning. That's such a massive win that will last for at least 10 years. If Sony and Microsft don't join than EA will make one console...its ineveitable as gaming gets more complex.

I just don't see Sony wanted to merge their name with Xbox....I can see Microsoft being happy as long as they take the money for Live(which will become absolutely massive on the Playstation brand...only fighting Nintendo OMGGGG, and Live being advertised as the big online program for Playstation.

Your thinking we'd get shafted beucase of how hard Sony is trying to fix their online now(because of competition) but if Sony and Microsft were to merge...EVERYTHING would be perfect and its not like Sony and Microsft would take care of their areas and sale the console...it would be such a badas$ console and have TONS of games and features. You would have 2 corporations behind it. The could take on anything.

I wouldn't doubt it happening. Its probably already in the works. Something going to have to change and give EVENTUALLY. Sony and Microsft can't butt heads for the next 10 years when they could make 5 times the money if they just joined...or EA just deciede to make a console and shut them both out. It will happen or at least something will.

-Maverick-6528d ago

Think about it. They'd sale 160 milion consoles or more. There would be possibly 80 million people on Live.

Every game thats sold would have playstation with the PS symbol and then also the "Live" symbol. Who knows they could merge names...but why would you when Playstation is already such a massive brand and you could just make Live(Microsofts only positive thing thought of with Xbox) and just merge.

Dude, it would be HUGE. Both companies would make MASSIVE amounts of money and we would be playing on the most amazing MONSTER of a Playstation ever fathomed. It would have every great series ever on a PS,Xbox or PC. LMAO

I hope it happens. We would win SO BIG.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio11d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing11d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit11d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing11d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
