A comeback from what? They were dominating everyone hardware-wise last gen, and their software has been dominating everyone every gen.

I don't know what race you have to be watching for Nintendo to seem like an underdog.

Dunban674213d ago

Oh-Kay.....

How are we feeling today? It will be ok.

Griever4213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

Wow! Sly-Lupin is really at good spinning and cherry picking facts! Nintendo have barely sold 3.625 million Wii U consoles a year since they launched. That is a horrible figure! Consoles usually sell 10 million units per year. PS4 has already passed them in less than a year and Xbone is about to pass them in a year. I think Nintendo will be able sell 25-30 million Wii Us at most. That will be the extent of their recovery since they completely squandered their one year lead.

HeWhoWalks4213d ago

Perhaps you've been living under a rock, but they aren't exactly the market leader in the 8th gen (a stark difference from last gen). You won't be doing them a disservice by recognizing that and crediting others where due, I promise!

OT: They're software is entertaining and their consoles always make money. No, they won't win the market-share race this time, but they'll be fine.

NotAfanBoyy4213d ago

3DS STILL dominating

subtract Sony's other consumer electronics and Microsoft Windows and then count them chips lol

HarryMasonHerpderp4213d ago

"their software has been dominating everyone every gen"

In your opinion...

MSBAUSTX4212d ago

If by opinion you mean cold hard numbers which can be easily googled then yes, in his opinion. They are selling almost as many software titles as the PS4 that has about twice as many consoles sold. They still have sold tons more titles than XB1 as well.

Before you say they had a year head start let me stop you. The year head start was ruined by a huge lack of games. A huge majority of their sales have been this year and started with Donkey kong Tropical Freeze and then MK8. So the bulk of their success has actually come durring the supposed "Big first year" of PS4 and XB1.

There is no denying that Sony is winning and one would be an idiot to say they arent. But the little console that could conti bb ually sells more games per cobsole owned than any other. That would point to the fact that people who own a Wii U are playing it more frequently and with more titles in their library than either of the competitors.

That isnt opinion man, it is simple math. It is a per capita statistic in the console community. Statistically the Wii U sells more games per owner than some of their conpetition does. More PS4s out there yes but when you look at the average, Wii U owners buy more games.

Metallox4212d ago

No, it actually has. Nintendo consoles have superior attach rates compared to others.

HarryMasonHerpderp4212d ago (Edited 4212d ago )

@MSBAUSTX

Calm yourself friend. There is no way that Nintendo has "dominated EVERY single gen in software".
I was talking about in terms of great games not sales (which is all opinion). But even if we do talk in terms of sales I will say it again, there is no way Nintendo has dominated in software EVERY single gen. You ever heard of the Playstation 2? which sold 155 million units might I add. Simple maths really.
Not sure why people are harping on about attach rates when I never said anything to do with attach rates.

Dunban674211d ago

Wii u software sales have been abysmal. - no you can t forget the year head start they had - because next year both Sony and MSFT will sell more software in their 2 nd yeR than 1st just as the Wii u has yetSony has already blown by the Wii u in software and widening the gap tremendously every week- and Mst is quickly catching up ( and may by year end) despite being on the market a year less AND few systems sold.

The Wii u has certain games like MK8 w very high attach rates but the system over all has terrible software sales

You Lso have to realize that both MSFT and Sony sell far more digital software than Wii u too and we only get to see that in the quarterly reports

@hewhowalks perhaps you are living under a rock..Sly-Lupin stated a fact ... last generation Nintendo did dominate hardware and last time I looked they were still number 1 in portable hardware (3ds) and number two in home consoles this generation ...so I agree how are they making a comeback ....people lie numbers don't .....just to refresh your memory wii and ds last generation sold over 250,000,000 millions consoles>>>>>ps 3+360+psp total...that is a fact if you don't believe me look it up ???so next time you try to call someone out know what you are talking about .....Mikelemonade ...how is that a spin when it's a fact in what he said ....take off the fanboy glasses and before you state I'm a fanboy I own all three systems ...true gamer

Hoffmann4213d ago

Today in November 2014, Sony sold almost as many Playstation 3's than Nintendo Wii's. There are no new official numbers bout the Playstation but they were at 80 Millions a year ago. Nintendo stopped the production of Wii's and were at 105 Millions.

Am quite sure their are more PS3's sold than Wii's when Sony stops producing the platform.

And when it comes to Software, look at the Third Party Situation.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory4213d ago

uh no. PS3 will never reach Wii numbers

DC7774213d ago

It may be inching closer but Nintendo abandoned Wii years ago now. PS3 and 360 are still selling mostly due to the huge delays of MOST of the new gen games promised for the new systems. Not to mention the dual gen ports of current releases to milk the market.

Ubisoft is abandoning them after this year. Other 3rd parties will follow suit.

If games like Batman, The Division, Halo and Uncharted were already out, and double gen ports ended, nobody would be buying the last gen systems but a select few budget minded individuals.

Kevlar0094213d ago

I'd only imagine PS3 outselling total Wii sales if a bunch of people wanted cheap blu-ray players and liked the idea of having a backlog of games to go through. Even then we're talking many years down the line, if even possible.

Hoffmann4213d ago

@repliers since I can't reply to them directly.

I have nothing against Nintendo but the sale number differences are really very shrinking. Would not surprise me to read it in the first 2015 months that they are even

Griever4213d ago (Edited 4213d ago )

Yeah, he stated facts but he cherry picked them to make it look like Nintendo is doing fine. The discussion at hand is the market performance of the Wii U. It launched a year early than the competitors and got outsold by one of them in a few months despite it being more expensive. The second competitor is also about to outsell it in a year despite being more expensive. They have sold only 7.25 million Wii Us in 2 years when PS4 and Xbone have shipped 13.5 million and 7 million in less than a year. The performance of a product is judged in comparison to its competitors and Wii U's sales performance has been a disaster.

@Kevlar009

I agree that it has great games and I am glad that you are happy with your purchase. Nobody has an issue with that. The issue is that some people are just not willing to accept the truth about Wii U's performance and resort to denial and spinning. That gives rise to an argument.

Kevlar0094213d ago

Well a comeback is going from a terrible position to a much better one. Thanks to more games WiiU sales have doubled in the second quarter compared to the last Q2. You can't say the WiiU has no games when they are on track to have 1 1st party game every month in 2015, especially when you consider their quality.

What's important is Nintendo making it back into operating gains, to where every financial bottom line is in the black. It's easy to overlook the bigger picture, which is Nintendo as a company depends on their game division excelling to even exist.

The generation is only just starting, and as a WiiU owner I couldn't be much happier with my purchase.

MSBAUSTX4212d ago

Dude everyone cherry picks the stats that make their console of choice seem the best. I am sure you have done it somewhere else or you wouldnt be critisizing him for trying to state fact that make ninte.do look good. Stop harping on someone for trying to state positive things about what the love. He didnt bash anyone he merely stated facts like you admitted. Get over it.

Besides last I checked Nintendo is making money now off of their hardware and software sales. Yet despite the PS4s amazing success, how are their finantials doing? Not so good as I have been reading.

So regardless of who is selling more it comes down to who is making money amd Nintendo is making money again. That to me would point to them being a success, not a disaster.

Dunban674211d ago

MSBAUSTX:

Nintendo is not making a profit from its games division. Just yet- their profit was from interest income and favorable exchange rates - check their quarterly reporting - it is public info

They may (prob will IMO) make an operating profit this quarter w big holiday sales but they are not yet and it wil remain to be seen if they can make a profit for their fiscal year as a whole- This year they are selling Wii U s below their manufacturing cost due to write downs of inventory in their precious fiscal year so next year their cost basis for the Wii u will actually be going up

Kevlar0094213d ago

It's crazy to think Nintendo has been held back because their first party didn't know HD development techniques. Now that they know how to do what others have been doing for years, Nintendo's strength is evident. Not only have they made good decisions with Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors, but there are 11-12 1st party Nintendo games planned for 2015. Their games will continue to rate among the highest despite being "last gen" software.

MK8 DLC is a positive sign of things to come, Smash is gonna be awesome, and thankfully sales are improving. Nintendo has moved out of hibernation and are starting to kick-ass again, at least on the WiiU side.

Emme4213d ago

I dont see Sony stopping PS3 production before 2017.
The hardware is still capable, the games are still top notch, sales are brilliant.

Griever4213d ago

They have still got several games to be released on PS3. MGS5, Tales of Zestiria and Persona 5 are just some of them. We are still waiting for even a gameplay vid of Persona 5. It will probably release in 2016 early so PS3 will be going strong at least until then.

wonderfulmonkeyman4213d ago

Making?
They've already MADE a comeback.
They're making profits again rather than losing cash left and right, and the lineup of games on their systems is steadily improving and growing even without third party multiplats backing them up.

Nintendo will be fine this gen, no matter what "place" they finish in, in the ridiculously overhyped console wars.

Summons754213d ago

Nailed it, was going to say the exact same thing. The trip up the Wiiu had its first year was only a grain of sand compared to what Nintendo has done and is going to do. Lots of kids doubt them but of theyve been around for 125 years than they clearly know what they hell they are doing.

PlayStation Store’s top downloads of 2025

O'Dell Harmon Jr. writes: "Before we say goodbye to 2025, let’s take a look back and see what were the most downloaded games of the year. It was a great time for sports, shooters, and some new PlayStation VR2 games. Sports favorites topped the charts in US/Canada and EU, with NBA 2K26 and EA Sports FC26, respectively.

Juggernaut GTA V found a home in the top three for both regions, with new 2025 release Battlefield 6 claiming second place in the US. Fortnite took top place for free-to-play games, and Beat Saber continues its PS VR2 success."

FH5 4th in Europe compared to North America 14th. Not surprising.

LucasRuinedChildhood120d ago

I think it shows how shortsighted it was for Sony to let go of Evolution and not get them to make some sort of competitor (open world Driveclub?) 10 years ago.

bionicstar120d ago (Edited 120d ago )

its a hard bet to make. hindsight is always 20/20.

Christopher120d ago

After Driveclub's reception, hard to say it would have done well enough to compete. It's easy to dream of such a thing, but to make it happen? It's taken how long for CoD to be dethroned? And it was dethroned by Hogwart's Legacy and has gained it right back just the next year.

It’s funny to watch the only games EU and USA agree on was Minecraft and back ops 7 both regions on 6 and 7 spot respectively other than that FIFA rules EU

yeh, football is really popular here in europe ha

I would like to see a list that has both free to play and paid games together, but at least we have this.

To this day GTA5 is a top downloaded game and it makes me wonder if the industry is really ready for GTA6. I imagine almost nothing else will sell during that game's release window.

I’ve never played Fortnite GTAV or CoD BO7 but I do own GTAV for PS4/5 because I got them cheap.

gold_drake128d ago

i think we should either take those games out, or make a singleplayer list too ha

badboyz09128d ago

I still play gta V alot. The others nah.

Popsicle128d ago

This is why we can’t have nice things.

Tacoboto128d ago

What exactly are we not getting?

Did we not just have a 2025 filled with nice games like...

Silksong, Doom TDA, Expedition 33, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Ghost of Yotei, Dispatch, Split Fiction, Hades 2, DK Bananza, and so many more?

Popsicle128d ago

Agree that all you just posted are great games. Expedition 33 is one of my favorites. Spent a large chunk of time on BG3 in 2023. Another for my all-time list.

My point though not well articulated in the OG post is that we would get more of the games of the quality you mentioned if so many valuable resources were not allocated to FTP slop and/or heavy monetization schemes. Some of what used to be my favorite franchises have been ruined by them.

To sum it up, I would like to see games like 33 outperform the profits made by games like Fortnite so more resources are allocated to great games. When heavily monetized FTP games are at the top of the list, we end up being stuck with a significant chunk of games that are not good. Or worst case scenario games that spend years in development, but get cancelled due to industry trend chasing.

cloganart128d ago

Such a pessimistic view. This year gave so many good games.

Christopher128d ago

Popsicle, I actually think we're getting more great games because of the slop. Developers are seeing that people aren't happy and taking advantage of big AAA studios not delivering for people.

Popsicle128d ago (Edited 128d ago )

Perhaps, and I hope you’re right. A shift is needed IMO
