PLAY preview: Killzone 2

Much of what Sony has released so far looks like average FPS fare, in spite of this thick coat of polish. The action in Killzone 2 takes place on Helghan, in the midst of the ISA's invasion, so there's a real business to the ambience of the world. Ships fly overhead, while explosions can be heard in the distance. Guerrilla wants to create a focused, war-torn atmosphere that will remind gamers of the Vietnam conflict. With a range of extreme weather conditions that'll apparently affect certain levels, Killzone 2 aims to push the fish-out-of-water tone to the fore.

Still, Killzone 2 might prove itself to be a next-gen extravaganza. Granted, PLAY are annoyed that it's slipped from 2008 into 2009, leaving the PS3 with a repeated Christmas line-up from 2006, but maybe the wait is justified. Killzone 2 looks cinematic, bold and entertaining, though standard in many ways. It still has a lot to prove.

Wow, talk about a negative preview. Well I do hope GG shows something innovative in Killzone 2 at this E3. Its kind of odd how they bash Killzone 2 for its scripted events and nothing new. Last time I checked Call of Duty 4 was the same thing. But it was praised to death & rightly so it was an excellent shooter.
By the way did he just say PS3 has a repeated lineup of 2006? I mean he considers LBP, Socom, MotorStorm 2, and R2 all bland games?

BulletToothtony6494d ago (Edited 6494d ago )

I just find it crazy of how some people can really say it needs innovation...

It's an FPS and it has the new cover system.. graphics look the best i've ever seen and the way that the helghast respond to where you shoot them is incredible.

The lighting is incredibly amazing, having it's own lighting engine for a first time in a console, explosions and those gas cans are something else and the environments that are destructible look top notch..

For what i've read the controls are doing pretty good (which is one of the most important things in a game, that's why cod4 is really that good) and the slight use of sixaxis seems to be a really fun addon..

i mean i really fail to see how all of these points don't show any innovation, if someone fails to see all of this and keep pointing at the same lacks innovation, maybe they shouldn't be in the video game business cause they obviously don't have an eye for something new.

jkhan6494d ago (Edited 6494d ago )

@1.1 I don't killzone 2 is lacking innovation in terms of its graphics. But what all the press is screaming about is that apart from its graphics it isn't really bringing anything new that is as jaw dropping as its graphics. Like how R2 is bringing 60 player multiplayer & 8 player coop. Similarly we have to wait till E3 to see what they are doing. I just hope the campaign has some huge boss battles. MGS4 has spoiled me, when it comes to boss battles:P
By the way people who disagree with me, kindly do let me know what they are disagreeing about?

BulletToothtony6494d ago

and i think it will keep me playing the multiplayer for many months..

But just cause it's gonna be a great game doesn't make killzone any less of a game.

I pointed out all the things that killzone2 is bringing in the post above.. plus we still don't know anything about the multiplayer, which seems very weird as well..

Imo i don't think killzone lacks innovation, as long as it does what it does well.. look at cod4.. what did it bring to the table??? nothign but it plays good. Imo killzone2 is already bringing more than cod4 did..

Panthers6494d ago

Killzone is innovating in more ways than most FPSs have in a long time. The new death animations and cover system will make the game feel more immersive than ever. That is the true goal of FPSs in my opinion, to make you feel like you are there. To completely immerse you in the experience.

IQUITN4G6494d ago

That's one thing you get a lot of concerning either Killzone 2 or Resistance 2, 60 players this lighting that or how many weapons. It's all tech talk from day one it seems with these two

I have no idea how these games will end up but i certainly have what i consider a good idea already from the videos

The first Killzone was a bag of sh!t tech wise but it didn't stop me from enjoying it's gorgeous atmosphere and enjoyable enough gameplay - people really should play it some. The second looks polished to perfection but that's about all you can really say at this time.

Funny enough Halo3 is ripped on quite a bit for it's less than stellar looks(play the game a whole lot more than once and your mind soon changes thanks to the noticing of HDR and several beautiful details)but funny enough it is always mentioned as the one to beat- clearly many will disagree but it's forever thrown into conversations and so is clearly doing great things with it's combat design.Evidently graphics are not the most essential of ingredients for a great FPS because for that basis to be true, Halo3 would have been rubbished already by the media.

Resistance1 has perfectly reasonable inoffensive fun gameplay but was not considered able to keep up with the big boys.Insomniac are very talented but just looking at the videos is enough to see how things are very much the same for the sequel.

There is a lot of hope for these two titles but so many FPS already have proven that only a tiny fraction of those succeed as being truly great.

Who knows how well K2 and R2 will fair but it wouldn't mean sh!t if they were even a 100x better graphically were their gameplay to remain essentially like it was originally.

juuken6494d ago

Yeah, it was really negative.

Rikitatsu6494d ago

Resistance 2 is worth the hype ... KZ2 ... I think you guys shouldn't hype it for its graphics

HighDefinition6494d ago

They "graphically" matched the trailer. There is still alot of time.

AngryHippo6494d ago

.....i want GG to prove that this game is AAA, because in my honest opinion i really cant see it. People keep calling it a AAA title, which i dont feel is justified at this stage. I know it looks good, but i am more interested in storyline and how it plays and if these are good then how it looks, if the first two suck then this game will dissapoint. I think negative previews are a good thing in a way stopping over hyping. I would rather get a game not expecting much and be blown away in the end, than to be told its amazing get it and it sucks.

CrashSharc6494d ago

I don't get how can be considered NOT AA whereas Gears Can. Exactly what do games like Gears or COD4 do that this doesn't. Has no one seen how crazy the hit respnse system, the lighting , and the Coversystem is in KZ2? or is it just me? Whatever, I can be hyped for any game I choose, and I'm hyped for this game. Can't wait for R2 either ;)

RememberThe3576494d ago

Games do not have to innovative to be fun. COD4 didn't really do anything new but the game was awesome. I'm not saying that game should not innovate, but great doesn't equal innovative. I'd rather a game be fun than innovative. If a dev focuses on being innovative they can loss focus on making a game fun. That said I think Killzone 2 is innovative in as many ways as it can. I agree that GG needs to prove them selves with this game but they are getting way too much sh*t. The only problem I saw with Killzone were some graphical hiccups, everything else was prety damn good. Oh well, that may have just been my copy...

Off topic.

LOL.

paul_war6494d ago

This is a UK mag, which is Playstation only & 100% independent.

HighDefinition6494d ago

Disregard the previous, but the point remains KZ2 still has lots of time and has "graphically matched the CGI trailer, you gotta give them credit for that. IMO, anyway.

Orange Juice6494d ago (Edited 6494d ago )

"PLAY are annoyed that it's slipped from 2008 into 2009, leaving the PS3 with a repeated Christmas line-up from 2006"

Fu*k, I wish Little Big Planet came out in 2006. Leave it to people like this not to be satisfied this year with the biggest game content wise (resistance 2) and critize Sony for not putting out 2 shooters in a month. What bullshit.

nos4speed6494d ago

I hate reading stuff like this because its full of bull****. How can you say anything against a game which will set the bar high for all other games to come, I mean what the hell is he talking about a pretty average FPS, the only thing average about it is the fact its first person and there are guns, what the hell else is he expecting a FPS thats actually a 3rdperson shooter in disguise. Saying that is just like saying gran turismo 5 is just like NFS pro street because they are both about cars but one is shiny. Someone needs to give this guy a 4 finger pimp slap.

Xi6494d ago (Edited 6494d ago )

it's not setting the bar high.

What is it setting the bar high on? graphics? Something that's still far surpassed by the likes of crysis.

Every frame of the game I've seen it looks like gears of war in first person with a different enemy. It's nothing new, and that's what It's being critizied for. It's nothing particularly new or interesting.

story wise, it's okay, but after playing the first one I was disappointed buy it. The ai leaves something to be desired and the gameplay looks like every shooter out there.

Sure it has very nice graphics, but you can't rely on something like that now that every game can have really nice graphics.

You have to stop kidding yourself.

CrashSharc6494d ago

"You have to stop kidding yourself."

nos4speed6494d ago

LMAO honestly how can you say it doesnt set the bar high, it offers immersive gameplay that only MGS4 could challenge, and yes graphics do matter and are very important in setting the bar high. And I really cant understand the amount of people who say anything to do with killzone is just copying off Gears, unless guerilla had a time machine at the time of developing killzone and went 2 years into the future im doubtfull they did, im pretty sure if anything gears took aspects from killzone.

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX528d ago (Edited 528d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne528d ago (Edited 528d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro528d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken527d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown528d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72528d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken527d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya527d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast528d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood528d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro757d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72757d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_757d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga757d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos756d ago (Edited 756d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23756d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000757d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin757d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole757d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix757d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989757d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor757d ago (Edited 757d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

757d ago
Michiel1989757d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor1061d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar1061d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg1061d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz1491060d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance11381061d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim1061d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC1061d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance11381061d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle1061d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix761061d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware7301061d ago (Edited 1061d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger1060d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca1061d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy1061d ago (Edited 1061d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain1061d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright1061d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
