Analyzing Five of Alien: Isolation’s Most Glaring Plot Holes

EB's Matt Heywood writes, "Before I dive into this fun editorial on Alien: Isolation I just want to reiterate that I absolutely love the game and gave it one of the highest review scores the site has doled out in 2014. The narrative is intriguing, the characters aren’t generic, and the atmosphere is easily one of the most terrifying experiences in all of gaming. With that being said there are more than a few moments where you’ll question how a particular event in the game was possible. Many of these plot holes were obviously created because this game is pure fiction and based on a futuristic world full of space stations, ships, and deadly aliens, so its narrative couldn’t exist in our reality, but a few go against fundamental laws of nature, so they stand out as almost being too Hollywood if you will. Mind you, none of these holes in the game’s plot ruin it whatsoever, they just remind you that you are indeed playing a video game that is based on a fictional world, which in and of itself is slightly disappointing considering how important immersion is in a game like Alien: Isolation."

This game is fantastic, but it does feature a few moments that just don't seem to fit with what we know about the Alien franchise.

I agreed with point 1 & 4. Both like a plot hole. But not for 2, 3, and 5.

- Point no 2

It's not a plot hole. If you watch Alien directors cut, it showed that the Xenomorph captured Dallas and Brett and prepared them in a cocoon state like in Aliens, even though there's no egg seen by Ripley. So it's possible that the Xenomorph can produced multiple egg even if they're not the Queen.

- Point no 3

It's not a plot hole. Watch Alien again. Ash said the Xenomorph can adapt to any environment. You seen them lived under thermo-nuclear reactor in Aliens and swimming in Alien Ressurection. So it's possible the Xenomorph can live in space.

"but considering that in Alien and Aliens, the preferred method of killing the Xeno and the Queen was to flush them out of airlocks so they die in space"

No. Ripley only think if the Xenomorph can't live in space because she lacks the knowledge of the creature and at that time she doesn't have any alternative to destroy the Xenomorph.

- Point no 5

Rather than a plot hole, i think this is a throwback for fans to remember the climax moment in Alien and Aliens. We thought Ripley are safe after blowing up Nostromo and LV-426 but the Xenomorph is one tough sob.

4 is not a plot hole. You killed the first alien that was tracking u 3/4 through the game. The one that decides to take you alive is a different alien. There is multiple aliens by the end. One decided to kill u another decided to keep u alive.

Definitely some questionable holes, but glad to hear that overall the game is still super fun.

Hmmm I know that the aliens are supposed to be able to survive in all conditions so I'm not sure it's a staightforward plot hole, but some of the alien lore is a bit vague. Still a great game though and It didn't bother me while playing.

The surviving in space thing didnt make sense in the movie either, it was just a dramatic effect.

The Best Alien Games (To Play After Watching Alien: Earth)

An opinion piece on the best Alien games. From arcade Alien vs Predator action to a terrifying Xenomorph stalker, these are the best Alien video games starring Ridley Scott’s chestbursting, acid-blooded nightmare.

Got a soft spot for AvP (2010) but solid list nonetheless.

My favorite Aliens game also, having the three campaigns to play was great. Scaling walls as an alien waiting to ambush anyone that came too close.

Only played a little of the horde mode but was still fun.

Aliens Fireteam Elite was my GotY in 2021, single player was kinda bad but playing that game 3 player with friends was so good and really challenging on higher difficulties

Massive shout out to Aliens Vs predator 2 (2001), a dialup lag filled fun mess in multiplayer and 3 great campaigns

I played through most of the PS4 version of the game but stopped because another game came out. I bought it last year for PC with the intention of using the VR mod but haven't gotten around to setting it up. I am glad I waited.

Great game, even better in VR. A little drawn out by the end, but I hope we see CA do something a little different with the sequel.

Sweet. I also rebought this game on Steam for the purpose of VR. I'll have to give it another shot w full immersive controls. I had only tried it out briefly before.

It's funny this was never officially released at retail as a VR game, bc it feels so perfect for it!
