Why The Witcher 3 “needed” to be on PS4

Speaking exclusively to VG247, the developer of The Witcher series has said that it’s crucial the game reaches as wide an audience as possible via the new Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles.

vishmarx4250d ago

this is like the second or third time theyve mentioned the ps4 version

Lon3wolf4250d ago

Most probably because Witcher 2 never came to PS3 is why the PS 4 is mentioned in this context, they need 3 on all platforms to have a fighting chance to make a profit.

Gazondaily4250d ago

Yeah.

"“We needed to be on the new consoles and in particular the PS4, because a lot of people are attracted to them.”

It would be silly to write off the console that is selling the most this gen.

Silly Mammo4250d ago

Why does it need to be on the PS4? 12 million sold is why.

AntoineDcoolette4250d ago

^ Witcher 3 was announced for PS4 since early 2013 before PS4 released. CD Project Red didn't know if PS4 would sell such numbers or not compared to competitor consoles at the time.

Really, I'm sure they know there were PS3 owners who wanted to play The Witcher 2 but they are a small team and the complexity of the Cell processor made it impractical for them to bring it to the system, unfortunately.

There was even an effort to bring the first Witcher to consoles but it was outsourced to a third party that happened to botch it.

Unspoken4247d ago

Maybe they put it on PS4 because PS4 owners may buy it? I mean 12 million pales in comparison to ~160 million previous gen console owners combined with PC owners.

I'm playing through The Witcher 2 again, and I wished it had been released on PS3 (I don't have a 360) so I could have played it in front of my telly with full surround sound.

But I have to say The Witcher 3 is my most anticipated game of all time. So glad it's not a PC exclusive, and if the rumors are true that it is bigger than Skyrim, then I'm going to be playing this game for a looong time :)

ElementX4250d ago

You can play on PC on a TV

Psygnosis3334250d ago

@ElementX

maybe he only have ps3

ScottyHoss4250d ago

He wouldn't be playing it, again, if he didn't have a PC GrayFOX333. And unless he has a 360 or one controller then keyboard and mouse won't be much fun in the couch :P

DARK WITNESS4250d ago

I honestly believe that everyone who owns a next gen system owes it to themselves and their next gen console to buy a copy of this game.

With the massive amount of disappointing games, uninspired stories and HD remasters of games that we already played in HD... I think we as gamers really need to support games that are deserving of being called "truly" Next gen.

Don't get me wrong, there is a chance the game could be a disappointment as well. If it is I think... well I don't know what I will think but I have a feeling my childhood love of gaming may just die a slow and painful death.

Games like the witcher need to be a big success, at least so the publishers can see there is profit in making big epic story driven games.

Omnisonne4250d ago

The Witcher 3 was one of the games I initially bought the PS4 for, but got delayed early 2014. In my eyes this will be one of a small selection of games actually worth getting so far.

I honestly cant imagine it turning out as an average game lol
But its always best not to fully succumb to hype and expectations

medman4250d ago

@dark witness
I will never understand why people say they are "disappointed" in new consoles in the first year or so of their release. Launch window games have never defined any generation, and launch window titles shouldn't be a reason for "disappointment". If you're disappointed, that is a you problem. No one forced you to buy a console first year. If you're an early adopter, you should know what to expect by now, it's nothing new to gaming. Meanwhile, 2015 is looking amazing for game releases and quality titles. 2014 is a year in which "next gen" titles suffer due to also being developed to run on last gen hardware, the 360 and ps3. For monetary reasons, that was always going to happen because the install bases are not big enough to justify the investment of building only for current gen ps4/xbone. We already see that changing, and it will come full force in 2015. So take a deep breath, relax, and realize there is never a quick, immediate shift between generations...it takes time, and 2015 is looking to be that time.

dont worry man, I will definitely buy this just to support these guys, I've like everything I've seen and read about the game. Heard nothing but praise from the PC community about these guys. Im newbie to the franchise but I do love RPGs and The Witcher 3 will be nice collection to my PS4 library.

DARK WITNESS4250d ago

@ medman

You say you don't understand why people say they are disappointed and you say nobody forced me to buy the consoles, I am sorry but who asked you to understand why I am disappointed?

You are right when you say it's on me, yes it is on me, it's me that is disappointed so of course it's on me.

am I expecting this generation to be defined by it's launch games...No. Am I expecting launch games to meet a standard based on what the dev's said we should expect.. Yes!

When Last gen started did I expect the games in the first year to define it, not really but you know what, PGR3 was one hell of a launch racer and a better offering then driveclub. Within that first year we got oblivion which did a great job of defining what to expect and was nothing like the disappointments we have had so far. in Case you don't remember oblivion came out in March 2006 on the 360 which launched in Nov 2005. Just saying

Well, the PS4 is the defacto, the it, the darling console this gen, so devs have been creamin themselves to mention it or get their games running on the console any chance they can. We should be used to it by now. Lets be honest it has the highest userbase and easier to program for, more powerful than what Nintendo or MS offered so isnt this expected?

Magicite4250d ago

only an idiot dev would skip PS4 now (or the one who got funded by MS/Nintendo)

The actor who portrayed Zoltan Chivay in The Witcher series of games has died

Alexander Morton, the Scottish actor probably best known for starring in British comedy drama Monarch of the Glen - but known to me for being the hilariously foul-mouthed dwarf Zoltan Chivay in The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3 - has died aged 81.

Cause they play NBA2k26, COD and gamepass

Fishy Fingers76d ago (Edited 76d ago )

3x less sales than Playstation.
3x less consoles sold than Playstation.

Per captita, it averages out that the same number of users are buying CDP games regardless of platform, no?

Bathyj75d ago

The exact same or possibly more because a series S, initial investment and effort to Port to Xbox consoles for a third of the return.

Simply not worth it

LMGk75d ago

“ Simply not worth it”

And yet, basically every game comes to Xbox.

NotoriousWhiz75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

A third is a pretty big number to be honest. Like would you rather make 15 million or 20 million? That's the difference that a third makes.

GamingSinceForever76d ago

Hey it’s ok. They are really impressed with XBOx’s new CEO so exclusivity is on the way. 😂

Loktai76d ago

Ok but I mean be logical ... modern PC, Switch, PS4 PS5 then you have XBOX, of all of those XBOX is probably only 10 percent... I mean, what do you expect? 10 percent increase in sales is still nothing to sneeze at, remember - this is CD projekt red and they sell a lot of software. 10 percent of their sales is probably what most studios DREAM of selling .... just playing devils advocate..... its easy to say LOL haha XBOX.... but.. I mean we know what it is at this point. I havent bought on since my xbox one X and before that I only used other peoples xboxes since the OG XBOX and stick with PC and Playstation and switch OLED, but .. I mean.... theres nothing WRONG with an xbox considering its just not the best - but they work fine. make no mistake.
