Microsoft 1st Party Blunders & the Future

Microsoft Games Studios is still in its infancy. There are some talented studios currently working on titles over at Microsoft such as Rare, Lionhead, and Turn 10. However since the Xbox 360s inception Microsoft seems to have let certain studios slip away that could have made great assets for their 1st party development house. With Microsoft stating previously that they want to become more focused on 1st party development to push hardware instead of relying on 3rd party exclusives one has to wonder why the management over at Redmond would let some of these potentially valuable developers slip through the cracks.

Microsoft has stated that buying out development houses isn't always the most sound strategy for both parties involved. However, it is a good way to strengthen MGS and promote growth as well as diversity. Let's take a look at what Microsft has allowed to to be taken away as well as what could be potentially wise business moves to improve the 1st party development for Microsoft Game Studios.

Microsoft havn't got first party developers as good as Sony, they just buy exclusives from third party developers, it really is quite worrying. i hope Sony don't flash the cash to get good games, they should carry on with their own studios.

Breakfast6542d ago

Who cares if they "flash the cash"....what does that have to do with you...lol.

For all you single console owners youd better hope, the companies buy as many exclusives as possible. All it is, is extra incentives for the person who owns the console. Your not paying for the game, Sony or MS is.

If you view that as bad, or immoral then youve been on n4g for too long.

power of Green 6542d ago

I have to report your comment as off topic this is about MGS.

littletad6542d ago

Because Sony pretty much invented video games, therefore exclusivity should be theirs and theirs alone. That's pretty much along your way of thinking.

LaChance6542d ago (Edited 6542d ago )

they "flashed" a whole lot of cash for Haze to go exclusive.
While MSFT get games Star Ocean 4 Sony go hunt down games like Haze.

There is no problem at all MSFT paying for exclusives. Its just businnes. It happens everywhere.Music download sites often pay to get an artist exclusivly for a lapse of time , At@T signed a deal with Apple for Iphone exclusivity ,Tv channels sign deals for series to appear exclusivly on their channel etc etc

The only ones complaining are gamers like you who wont ever be touching those games or at the best 1 year later when everyone has moved on to something else simply because you only have a PS3.

Nobody is complaining , only Sony fanboys complain about it.
Geez 360 gamers didnt cry and whine when Haze went exclusive.

The only drawback is their is a chance that those games go multiplat but even if they do its not a huge loss for MSFT because the "hype effect" is already passed.

MSFT sure do need some more 1st party devs but they are useful only if they make good games. Its useless having 1st party devs for the sake of having exclusive games. They got to be either system sellers are something that brings something innovative to the console.

Just deal with it.

Tone6542d ago (Edited 6542d ago )

Are you mental or living in fantasy land... Sony did not invent video games... are you 10 years old?? go look at the history of video games and come back and change that statement!!

Video games have been going long before Sony even thought about making a console!!!

littletad6542d ago

But we know who is. Especially since he can't even read the sarcasm in my comment.

it would be a great business move if Microsoft purchased Epic and Sega. All of Sega's IPs plus the Gears of War franchise and the Unreal Engine would definately bolster Micros 1st party lineup.

DanB916542d ago (Edited 6542d ago )

But sega NEVER. I can understand why MS would purchase Epic but why purchase Sega? If MS purchased Sega i'd be really pissed. MS and Sega have never done a game together. The only company I think Sega should be bought by is Nintendo, and even that I wouldn't be too happy about. Sega should stay its own company and I am just hoping one day Sega will release the successor to the Dreamcast.

But the thing with Epic is that, Epic has a contract with Midway to release 2 more games, so if MS was to purchase Epic I don't think it would be for a while

Bladestar6542d ago (Edited 6542d ago )

What are 1st studios? Most of these studios become 1st party studios when the console makers purchase that studio... usually because of some IP that they believe will help them push consoles... Now the benefit here is that a) developer can focus on make a game only for 1 platform. and b) the game will be exclusive to 1 console...

But what's the big deal if a console maker can benefit from all that while not having to buy the entire developer? Let's not forget that some developer do not want to be owned since being purchased by a bigger company means you are told what games to work on... This is the reason why Bungie didn't want to be owned by microsoft anymore... sadly console maker company usually decide what games to make based on what game can help push consoles... that means that Bungie would be making Halo for ever... This is not only about microsoft.. but any company it's obvious that if a game sells.. why put a developer to work on another IP that may not even sell as well? A studio that's now owned by a console maker will work on a specific IP exclusive or not while working on other titles since they have control of the staff they hire or not...

I mean take a look at the biggest titles now... Metal Gear, Gears, Final Fantasy and others... all exclusives none made by 1st party developers.... yet they have biggest impact in terms of console sells... ironic ehh? and kind of funny since it contradicts what people are saying about how a console maker have to have lots of 1st party studios.. LOL.

@DanB91 - you need to do a little more research about Sega and microsoft.... some people even think that the xbox brand is practically the dream cast 2... since lots of the sega staff endup at Microsoft Game Studio.... microsoft was heavily involved with the development of the dream cast...

http://findarticles.com/p/a...

"Microsoft Co Ltd of Japan has released details of the customized version of the Windows CE operating system to be used with the Sega Enterprise's Dreamcast video console (CI No 3,416). The main change from the standard implementation of CE is that the user interface has been discarded and the system uses Microsoft's DirectX 5 application programming interface (API) as a front end instead. "

and that's not all...

http://www.microsoft.com/pr...

doesn't that sound like the xbox? hell did you know that the dream cast Online service was initially worked by Microsoft... and Sega then later decided to work their own... which as a result many believe originated what we know as XBOX live?

If you do a little more research about microsoft and Sega you would see how much alike they both are and how resources were shared and moved around... If microsoft ever purchase sega it would just be bringing the sega staff together .... because most of the sega staff involved on hardware pretty much jumped to MGS.

littletad6542d ago

Hasn't made a memorable game since Shenmue. They really aren't a powerhouse developer anymore. Most of their key people pretty much moved on.

DanB916542d ago

Yes I am well aware that the Dreamcast used MS technology, hence the label on the console that said "Powered by Windows CE". Yes Sega and MS worked on stuff back in the Dreamcast days, but honestly if MS was going to buy Sega, they would have done it already.

You say the Xbox was practically the Dreamcast 2, and yes the Xbox controller looks EXTREMELY similar to the Dreamcast controller, but the thing is that if the Dreamcast would have survived, the Xbox probably would have been released anyway thus competing with Sega.

And honestly, if Sega had ANY interest in being bought by MS, they would have done an exclusive deal together which they have not, as all Sega games are multi plat.

CrashSharc6541d ago

yes Bladestar. MS is Very much like SEGA. Maybe a little too much for their own good ?

i know what you mean, but i just feel that microsoft are relying too much on third party exclusives. they may give fanboys something to shout about but i feel that Sony are handling exclusives much better, evening first and third party exclusives. i may be contradicting myself talking about fanboys as i have a preference towards sony, but c'mon, microsoft just buy buy buy, they havn't got an ounce of work in them.
@ disagrees, you know i'm right!

meepmoopmeep6542d ago

i think MS is too reliant on 3rd parties at the moment and should really focus on their 1st party studios. maybe acquire some more.

Breakfast6542d ago

Just wait till 2009 comes around...theyll rethink their strategy...lol

meepmoopmeep6542d ago

yeah, well Rare is doing pretty good for them, maybe they'll pick up Team Ninja and get some crazy sh*t happening.

they're not doing too bad with their 1st party, it just seems like they're more reliant on 3rd parties.

Midnight Snack6541d ago

Just wait till 9002 comes around...theyll actually have some strategy...lol

PimpHandHappy6542d ago

it would be a good buiness move to NOT buy companys like Epic or Sega because they have no interest in being bought. All the talent will just leave

What MS needs to do is MAKE a few new studios and have them work on REAL IP's. They never did sink the gaming roots very deep. It took Sony 20 years to grow its roots and not to flame this...

but

MS has kinda pigen holed themselfs into the "shooter" system! Its why they are going after Wii like gamers now because they NEED to set some roots down or they wont make a decade in gaming! They have 4 years to do this and if they dont i personaly dont see how they could bring out a new xbox!

plus

not to flame this anymore

have you played MGS?

I know alot of Devs have and they see where the top is now!

BIoodmask6542d ago (Edited 6542d ago )

is made up of studios they have bought. The only thing is they bought them back during the PS1 era. One of my favorite developers ever is Psygnosis. The studio that makes Wipeout. They used to develop games for the Commodore Amiga back in the day: Shadow of the Beast & The Killing Game show.

Whether a company buys a studio or just hires the people from it, it is the same end result. The only difference is through purchasing you gain rights to the orignal IPs.

In addition to Wipeout HD that comes in July... :)

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.
