The Horror Hype Train Returns – Alien Isolation Vs The Evil Within

'Back in July we took a look at how these two horror blockbusters were shaping up using data from Google Trends as a means of comparison. Now with just a week until release, we return to see how they’ve performed and identify which title is set to make the bigger impact. While Alien Isolation has already hit the ground running taking #2 in the charts can The Evil Within go a step further and become king of the haunted mansion?'

Not gonna compare because i will be playing them both and gotta say . I am glad that i will play a horror game again . Its been too long .

TheWackyMan4247d ago

Horror fans were once proud lump properous people that everyone loved and enjoyed, but then they started to lose the following and become skinny near dead hobos living in cardboard box, scrounging around for any horror game they could get their hands on, no matter how bad. All of a sudden, 2 grand studios lent their hands to the poor starving fan bases, so they could offer them 2 gems to help them recover from their disparity.

ReesesPuffs4247d ago

That was beautiful. P.T. made me almost ruin my pants. I'm hoping for the same thing with these two games.

Army_of_Darkness4247d ago

I would definitely take the evil within over Alien iso cause I enjoy and prefer horror games that don't make you completely helpless and at least gives you some type of a fighting chance to kill whatever that's trying to kill you.

morganfell4247d ago (Edited 4247d ago )

Dark Ocelot,

I agree. I am playing and enjoying Alien Isolation now and picking up the Evil Within this week.

They are dissimilar games.

Alien Isolation isn't a horror game. It is a remarkable science fiction title that is about tension rather than horror. It is a gut wrenching title. But that alone isn't horror. The Evil Within is closer to the core of what I call a horror game.

TheWackyMan4247d ago (Edited 4247d ago )

http://dictionary.reference...

Pretty sure you can classify it as a horror game. If the first movie is regarded as horror, then so should the game.

morganfell4247d ago (Edited 4247d ago )

TheWackyMan,

No offense but that reference is immaterial to me. :) Horror isn't something you can just define with a simple turn of a dictionary page. I just do not see it as a horror game. I game it and it is about tension and suspense.

AI is a great game in my book and I am enjoying it immensely. The tension puts me in knots to the point I take periodic breaks. It is closer to the movie from which it is drawn than any movie based game I have ever played. I saw the original Alien on opening day at the theaters and it stayed with me. But for me it just isn't horror.

mafiahajeri4247d ago

It's terrifying tbh they instill this weird sence of phobia in you, I don't know if it's the atmosphere but I don't want to be found by the alien, even though I know I can just load my save.

It's terrifying how you here him lurking about but to don't know where he really is.

Don't get me started with holding your breath when it comes near a hiding spot.

It's a horror game IMO

morganfell4247d ago (Edited 4247d ago )

@mafiahajeri,

I can respect you opinion. Seriously. And here is an agree click. Horror is a personal thing. Also I grew up likely a few years before most other posters on this site and horror for me is an entirely different animal.

Glad you are enjoying it.

Bimkoblerutso4247d ago (Edited 4247d ago )

It is a game with a horrific beast perpetrating horrific acts of violence. It may not be as over-the-top gory as a lot of other horror games, but it's certainly got the atmosphere.

I'm just glad so many people seem to be enjoying it despite that handful of retarded reviews, to be honest. Maybe gamers really are starting to move away from being led by the media.

Alien was boring. This i cannot wait for tomorrow

Benjammin254247d ago

Was one of the best survival horrors I've ever played. Enjoyed it immensely.

Ashunderfire864247d ago (Edited 4247d ago )

Alien Isolation will rip Evil Within, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Dead Space a new one! That Alien A.i. puts the competition to shame, and it's not just cannon fodder enemies that run towards you, only to see an end with your bullet.

gillri4247d ago

Me too getting both, absolutely loving Alien so far, exactly my kind of game much preferring it to Shadow of 'Chore'dor

mafiahajeri4247d ago

Both great games no need to compare, considering their miles apart...

JamieLeeC934247d ago

Shadow of Mordor's an awesome game.

gillri4247d ago

The combat was excellent, main questline was good with the cool nemesis system, but Ive played this game 10 times before and the open world felt like a chore to me,

I wish it was more of an RPG

-Foxtrot4247d ago

I think Evil Within won't disappoint, as I've said Alien Isolation is really not that scary.

Ashunderfire864247d ago (Edited 4247d ago )

Alien Isolation all the way man. I say the stream for Evil within and it look like Resident Evil 4 with some action. That Alien A.I. puts the competition to shame. Hide in the same locker twice and the Alien will play guessing games with you. Don't hold your breath and he will take you out of the locker, Keep the tracker on and he will spot you. He can even come out while your reading the computer terminal! Shoot your gun at humans then hide in a vent while the Alien devour the humans, only to grab me from behind inside the vent(holy shit that scared me)! Alien A.I. is the benchmark for surivival horror A.I. Dead Space can't even compare to this.

The Best Alien Games (To Play After Watching Alien: Earth)

An opinion piece on the best Alien games. From arcade Alien vs Predator action to a terrifying Xenomorph stalker, these are the best Alien video games starring Ridley Scott’s chestbursting, acid-blooded nightmare.

FTLmaster290d ago

Got a soft spot for AvP (2010) but solid list nonetheless.

Abnor_Mal289d ago

My favorite Aliens game also, having the three campaigns to play was great. Scaling walls as an alien waiting to ambush anyone that came too close.

Only played a little of the horde mode but was still fun.

Nittdarko288d ago

Aliens Fireteam Elite was my GotY in 2021, single player was kinda bad but playing that game 3 player with friends was so good and really challenging on higher difficulties

Massive shout out to Aliens Vs predator 2 (2001), a dialup lag filled fun mess in multiplayer and 3 great campaigns

The Evil Within Deserved More: A Great Horror Series Left Behind

The Outerhaven writes: While I hold Bethesda's The Evil Within series as some of the best Survival Horror games available, it's clear that Bethesda has no intention of revisiting the series. While Capcom is still working on its Resident Evil series, I look back at the now-dead survival horror series from Bethesda, wondering why the series was left wide open, and yet still not revisited.

An OK horror series left behind. It had some great ideas, but it never knew how to play to its strengths. Instead, it came out like just another RE4 clone.

I would love for a third entry to come out, but it needs to learn to lean in on the psychological aspect and move away from the generic "pew pew" ideology at the center of the gameplay loop. It doesn't need to abandon it; it just needs to put it into better context, is all.

Also, try a first-person perspective instead. Too many 3rd-person games with nothing to offer but an avatar taking precious screen space. At least make it an actual option and not that janky-ass mess the second game pretended to have.

Venoxn4g348d ago

Love both games, hope that we will get third game

gold_drake348d ago (Edited 348d ago )

i really didnt like the 2nd game.

first game was fantastic

I played through most of the PS4 version of the game but stopped because another game came out. I bought it last year for PC with the intention of using the VR mod but haven't gotten around to setting it up. I am glad I waited.

Neonridr366d ago

Great game, even better in VR. A little drawn out by the end, but I hope we see CA do something a little different with the sequel.

OtterX366d ago (Edited 366d ago )

Sweet. I also rebought this game on Steam for the purpose of VR. I'll have to give it another shot w full immersive controls. I had only tried it out briefly before.

It's funny this was never officially released at retail as a VR game, bc it feels so perfect for it!
