Why Do Next-Gen Games Keep Disappointing?

DriveClub, one of Sony’s big exclusive PlayStation 4 games, launched this week to a largely lukewarm reception. Evolution Studios’ hotly anticipated racing title had been paraded as one of the first must-have next-gen releases, only for a string of middling reviews to siphon any fuel out of its tank. The critical response, as a whole, has ultimately been mixed, with critics divided over the Runcorn-based developer’s intentions. The one thing that it’s not, however – whichever side of the fence that you occupy – is essential. Stop us if you’ve heard this one before.

Dat first first sentence...maybe he should take a dip in forza horizon 2. Should come on in the water is pretty good over here. Pretty cool and refreshing.

uth114284d ago

all of these "disappointing" are loved by lots of people.

The only reason they are disappointing at all is due to hype and unrealistic expectations.

get2sammyb4284d ago

Definitely a point that's raised in the article. I whole heartedly agree with you.

joab7774284d ago

Bingo.

And give it til next yr. It always takes 1-2 yrs before we hit that wtf! moment when we realize..yeah, we r next gen.

Also, the jump isn't as vast this time, gameplay is very similar if not identical and we have seen graphics this good for yrs already.

But it takes x. Wait until Dragon Age, the Witcher, Bloodborne and Batman. At that point, I am pretty sure we will be satisfied. And there will be a new IP at some point that will blow us away too.

But we have to support these Devs and publishers b/c despite all the "greediness", it's expensive to make these games and the next gen base isn't quite there yet.

uth114284d ago

yes, I think it's the unexpected IP that will blow us away. This year it was games like Wolfenstein and Shadows of Mordor that didn't have a whole lot of hype and took people by surprise. I think the games you mentioned by name carry the risk of overhype as well.

Benjaminkno4284d ago

I would argue that it's because games are improving in no other area but graphics.

N4g_null4284d ago

Don't you mean were loved? Plus many people are ignoring good games due to the idea of fulfilling the power that was promised to them.

Right now the wiiu is rocking bayo2 is the real deal. Very impressive and great game play.

Chrischi19884283d ago

It has something to do with people expecting "Next Gen Games". There are no next gen games, just games the same way like last gen, with improved graphics. It is not like the gameplay changed in games. An ego shooter is still only an ego shooter, better visuals didnt change that. No new ways of input, of course it cant really be any different. But dumb people automatically put unrealistic expectations to new games, because they have a new system.

jwillj2k44283d ago

"The only reason they are disappointing at all is due to hype and unrealistic expectations."

Unrealistic expectations to have your main feature working by the time you release your game? Say what you want about the actual driving mechanics, but any game with a focus on online play that launches with online play broken is absolutely unacceptable. I don't want to hear that they "didn't know". Take your pre-order purchase count, multiply it by x amount, and use it as the minimum baseline for your stress/load testing. Their servers should have been able to handle at least 300-500 concurrent users at one time. At this point they have damaged their credibility as a game studios.

Shits digusting.

Just lower your expectations. . and be realistic.

Godmars2904284d ago

Need a AAA pixel-graphic title. Screw realistic.

MultiConsoleGamer4284d ago

I am definitely not disappointed.

Question

How many of the people who are complaining actually own Destiny? DriveClub? How many of these complainers actually own an Xbox One or a PlayStation 4? I wouldn't be surprised if most of the people complaining are people who don't own any of these games or either console.

I am not disappointed with my PlayStation 4 nor do I feel the need to justify my purchase to some twit who probably doesn't have one.

wonderfulmonkeyman4284d ago

I don't own a PS4, but if Destiny came to PC, I'd consider it, if they fixed the drop rates.
I also own a PS3, but it's running out of space, and due to its age I don't know whether or not it would run Destiny smoothly.

So not owning the PS4 or XBone isn't the reason why I don't own Destiny.

iplay1up24284d ago (Edited 4284d ago )

Destiny definitely was ovehyped (single player) as was Watchdogs. Yes I do have it for PS4. The game I think deserves some hype after downloading the demo is Bayonetta 2.

Everyone's Talking About DriveClub Again, PS4's Underappreciated Racer

In this day and age, it’s rare we experience a warm fuzzy feeling when we boot up X (formerly known as Twitter, of course).

But the past few days have been lovely: our feed is full of people talking about DriveClub again.

The discussion started when someone posted a clip of the game and its infamous rain effects. The caption reads: “Still can’t believe this is a 12 year old game.”

This was one I was hoping would have some kind of boost from the PS5. The devs locked that sucker so tight...

I play the PSVR one even though it doesn't look as good, because that one is 60fps.

fr0sty90d ago

To this day, there still hasn't been a game to pull off better rain effects.

Evolution Studios.. another waste of talent

fr0sty90d ago

I interviewed them twice back in my gaming journalist days... Once at E3 2006 and again on a podcast about a year later. Really nice folks.

fr0sty89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

The guy we interviewed both times' name was Simon, I can't remember his last name, it was 20 years ago, but he was a really nice guy, and was very passionate about his job. It broke my heart when I saw Sony shuttered Evolution. I do hope they bring some of those folks back, but I remember another studio ended up hiring most of them back in those days, and they've been releasing new games since under that studio... Codemasters, maybe? I forgot which....

But the amount of talent that Sony has shut down over the years, it's disturbing. Psygnosis, Evolution, Zipper... just those three studios produced some of the most innovative games that PlayStation has ever seen... and those games need to be brought back.

Agent7589d ago

Driveclub VR was graphically tragic.

maximusprime_91d ago

If they were to release that game on the PlayStation 5, there would be absolutely no need for a remaster or a remake. The whole appeal of the original game was that it consistently exceeded people's expectations.

fr0sty90d ago

Higher rendering res and textures, higher framerate, maybe toss in some global illumination/ray tracing, but other than that, they could keep every polygon the same and it would still look absolutely incredible as a current gen title.

Reaper22_90d ago

That game has good graphics but bad AI, though.

Agent7589d ago

The AI was what I'd call aggressive, but superb to play.

Jin_Sakai91d ago

Sony should reassemble the team and make Driveclub 2. Driveclub was so ahead of its time it’s crazy.

lodossrage91d ago (Edited 91d ago )

This is what I hate about gamers sometimes

There is a segment of gaming communities that always want an old game to come back. But when the game(s) were in their prime, nobody supported them or not enough people supported them. Driveclub, Killzone, Resistance, etc all fit that profile.

I want Driveclub, Killzone, Resistence, and etc all back too. But I say that as someone that bought into, played, and own those games.

Too many people like to talk but not put up the money to support when it's needed. I even lump two of my own personal friends into that. I remember how one of them constantly said "I always wanted to play the Resistance games", yet never made an effort to buy any of them. No way that's an isolated event.

IanTH89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

There are certainly games that fit that description, but I'm not sure these are a good fit:

- Driveclub infamously launched in a truly terrible state. It had a central focus on online & social features, and those were broken for about 6+ months before people could reliably play it as intended. It was so bad that the PS Plus Edition was delayed, along with its companion app. It also released less than a year after the PS4 launch, so it had to deal with a smaller total of launch PS4 owners to sell to, and Driveclub's rough launch certainly did it no favors.
- Resistance got 3 main console entries, and one handheld title for the PSP and PS Vita. Killzone got 5 main console entries across 3 generations, and one handheld title for PSP and PS Vita. This was also the era of millions of shooters, especially of the First Person variety, & genre fatigue was getting heavier by the year. So I feel these did pretty good at 5 and 7 titles respectively, pointing to enough people showing up for at least a while.

I'm not saying people don't exist who fit that criteria for these games, but I also don't think they were the primary issue. I think after a solid break from the IPs, as well as a lessening of shooter oversaturation, these titles could find healthy audiences if they came out with new entries at this point.

Agent7589d ago

Killzone on the PS4 had the graphics, but the gameplay was tragic, I only rated Killzone 3, although the first game on the PS2 was decent. The Getaway was another game Sony canned, the sequel was so bad. Plenty of games need a sequel, the likes of Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Project Gotham, Wave Race and F-Zero have been retired. The racing genre these days, I'm sick of Turismo and Forza due to the same tracks and any other clones.

robtion90d ago

I think the original Motorstorm was the game that convinced me to buy a ps3. Way ahead of its time.

Storm2390d ago

I played the sh*t out of MotorStorm 1 and 2. Incredible games.

darthv7290d ago

Pacific Rift was the best of the bunch for me.

badz14988d ago

Pacific Rift for me is still the best off-road racer ever made

Agent7589d ago

Surprised Sony didn't release a collectio, but all they seem to do these days is release God of War and Uncharted collections. It kills me that I no longer have a PS3, so a collection would be awesome.

Classic PS4 Racer DriveClub Is Now a Decade Old

PushSquare:

DriveClub, the legendary PS4 racer from shuttered Runcorn studio Evolution, has such an interesting story.

Originally announced alongside the PS4, the game had been intended as a launch title – we even played it in a big London church Sony had rented to showcase the new system prior to its release.

Evolution was done dirty... DC is still the most stunning visual game of its generation. They certainly deserved better in the end.

VenomUK633d ago (Edited 633d ago )

DriveClub was pretty and I loved the experience of driving in the rain, it was immersive. I had some good races with people from an old forum, but at times I found it to be a bit boring. MotorStorm was such a fun game to play and I loved the controls - it would make sense to remaster that.

DarXyde633d ago

I'd give the visual showcase award of the last generation to The Order: 1886. That game was immaculate.

Uncharted 4 was also absolutely insane, and perhaps manages to use the PS4's power in extremely clever ways.

jznrpg633d ago

It didn’t get good reviews unfortunately

obidanshinobi633d ago

Cause the game was mediocre at best, and surpassed in pretty much every area by Forza Horizon 2.

IRetrouk633d ago

Apart from visuals, driving model, weather effects, only thing forza had was an open world...

Inverno633d ago (Edited 633d ago )

It's multiplayer component was the only thing struggling at launch but the game was still perfectly playable offline. Done dirty is an understatement because how many games after came out with broken online components that got a pass? Now games with an SP and MP get separate reviews for SP and MP smh! SONY shut them down as if Evo had been bleeding money instead of putting out great games. Their fate was undeserved and they were the targets of a media smear campaign due to that one trailer.

Knushwood Butt633d ago

Loved it.
Now here's a game that would benefit from a remaster.
4K, 60 FPS
I'd buy it.

ravens52633d ago

Might have to fire it up. Got it day 1, it was great to me.

outsider1624633d ago

See? Another reason why physical is important. Going all digital will have you miss out games like this.

Gabrielmpf633d ago

I loved tackling the leaderboards. It's a shame they couldn't even keep them.

Yi-Long633d ago

Brilliant game, I really miss it, and it deserved so much better than what Sony did to it.
Most important reason I liked it; It was FUN. That’s it. The actual gameplay, throwing a car around corners, the challenging AI opponents, the entertaining tracks which were peak-design, etc etc, it was above all just FUN to play.
