Lost Chrono Trigger Subplot Deemed Too Depressing

Square's Chrono Trigger stands out as one of the best RPGs from the Super NES era of gaming and would later go on to spawn a semi-sequel in Radical Dreamers, an actual sequel for the Sony PlayStation, and enhanced remakes for both the PS1 and the Nintendo DS as well as mobile platforms. The story of how a band of unlikely heroes band together via time travel to destroy an ancient space parasite eager to devour the planet is one of gaming's most detailed, most surprising tales, and while the game offers plenty to do and many sidequests to explore, one subplot was dropped from the game during development because it was deemed too depressing. In a game where time and fate regularly screw with the protagonists, how depressing did a story element have to be in order to be scrapped?

Just a correction that needs to be made about the article: Chrono Trigger was made by Square, not Square-Enix. They are two completely different game companies.

hkgamer4147d ago

That's just being picky. They merged with another company so its technically the same company.

At that time, they were Squaresoft actually.

I really need to complete this. Kept getting bored of the storyline. Chrono cross actually was more enjoyable for me, though I didn't complete that one as well.

You obviously don't have to, it's up to you if you want to finish. But with that being said I highly recommend finishing it. It's really good.

Really? For me it was the other way around, I kept starting Chrono Cross, and stopping part-way through several times because the story just didn't seem to pick up. However, I'm super glad I ended up finishing it. Really great game, though it could never top Trigger, as it will always hold a special place in my heart.

My favorite game of all time. Simply perfect

Borma4147d ago

Agreed. Although in regards to this story, I am a little bummed they didn't add this subplot. It could've added another ending. The 14th and final ending. ;)

contradictory4147d ago

could use a remake of this game *hint hint* *nudge nudge*

The game had some pretty depressing moments as it was:

1. Robo getting thrashed/trashed by his old friends.
2. Chrono going on trial for kidnapping.
3. Potentially having Lucca's father die.
4. CYRUS DIES!!!!
5. The king gets kidnapped! As does the chancellor!
6. Janus becomes "evil" Magus.
7. If you die after 2300, the game over screen reads "but the future refused to change."
8. Glenn is turned into a frog!
9. The dinosaurs go extinct!
10. The world is destroyed by Lavos.
11. You find out that time will end anyway.

Am I missing anything else?

Basically, their presentation says: Go Woke, Go broke.
Sorry fellow N4gamers.

Or, alternatively, don't cut Switch and Steam out of your biggest releases day one.

If your response to a 112 page presentation from a profit-maximizing investment fund about the need for corporate restructuring (i.e. layoffs), integrating non-gaming (i.e. sell merch or build a theme park) and other corporate initiatives, is that it's about "go woke, go broke", then it's because you've lost the ability to think in any terms. Awful way to live your life. Private equity is destroying the games industry while you obsess that Square made a cringe game everyone thinks is cringe in 2023. Time to move on.

i mean .. we've been saying this for years.

franwex67d ago

Oh darn. Maybe games with NFTs can fixed that!

Waaah waaah our profits aren't big enough! I mean, they're still growing and all, but we want it faster and NOW! Waaaah!
