Is #PS4Parity Really That Important?

NowGamer: "There are so many controversies these days it’s kinda tough to keep up.

It seems every day someone is getting their knickers in a twist about some insignificant problem with the industry; it’s really quite exasperating.

So when #PS4Parity kicked off it’s easy to overlook the problem – and there is a problem – and deem it as equally unimportant as every other hissy fit a group of irate gamers whine about."

Yes, it is. Developers (especially the ones who have been complaining about how the previous gen consoles were not so strong) should not limit their games intentionally and should develop games to the strengths of each console

Kingthrash3604118d ago (Edited 4118d ago )

Agreed ^^^^
I want the best for my money . to find out that a game has been gimped because one console cant handle it like its competition just feels cheated, and is a dirty practice. Some people bought a ps4 (and 360 last gen) because the game were better on the system. Nobody gimped for the ps3 and it was common knowledge that the 360 versions of games were running better because of the simplicity of developing for it. This time around the ps4 is easier to develop for and all of a sudden it a question if the parity is important. Get out of here....why are we holding hands now?? Give us the best you can do for each system. That's what we want, no matter what system it is give us the best game our console can handle. Not everyone has both systems, I only have a ps4 I shouldn't have to play the x1 version of the game.
That last sentence sounds bad but thats exactly what happened with ac unity and its bs.

rdgneoz34118d ago

"it was common knowledge that the 360 versions of games were running better because of the simplicity of developing for it"

Yep, multiplats ran a lot better on the 360 since the cell was a bit too complex. Took a while for devs (mainly Sony guys like ND or GG) to actually figure it out and make some amazing games. Hell, the whole gen was "journalists" and lens of truths going over all the minute details you wouldn't see unless you blow the image up to twice the size.

This gen both systems run the x86 architecture so it's a lot easier. Only difference is the hardware. And now the same journalists are saying graphics don't matter and devs are striving for "parity"...

darthv724118d ago (Edited 4118d ago )

The days of building to each platforms strengths was many years ago when it came to 3rd party games.

Back then you had teams that were assigned to the different systems to make the game to the best of their abilities. Back then you had genuine differences in the tech and performance. Different cpu/gpu structures and colors and sprites on screen.

There arent teams anymore. Last gen we could really see the port situation was one that favored the 360 for development (initially) and then ports to the PS3 werent up to par. Until later on when devs figured out that making it for the PS3 first meant they could port to the 360 with almost the same end result.

Now the two platforms are even closer in performance than last gen. which means that the strengths of each will not be put to use by 3rd parties. If you want to really see what can be done then it is in the hands of the 1st/2nd parties for that.

UltimateMaster4118d ago (Edited 4118d ago )

It's #PS4NoParity, not #PS4Parity.
That implies you want parity and not having your platform being at it's best.

UltimateMaster4118d ago

If Ubisoft wanted to be pro-consumer like the article said to please their customers, they'd be a Wii U version of AC Rogue that's coming on PS3/Xbox 360 regardless of the cost.

It's a no brainer how seeing the sales number of the PS4 over the Xbox One how much more people you are p*ss*** off here. Not good business practice.

If Microsoft didn't gave you 100 million $ for that parity, then your very dumb on loosing on those millions of sales of PS4.

GrandpaSnake4118d ago

actually kingtrash their was also parity issues with ps3 and xbox 360 microsoft has been doing this for a decade, almost forcing parity. why did a exclusive ff13 look betterand play perfect than ff13 2 when it was multi plat? that was a red flag for me and that is when i found out about parity.

Army_of_Darkness4118d ago

So when Microsoft's xbone struggles to reach the standard 1080p and makes up a lower 900p resolution it's acceptable because it is still over the 720p mark? Lol!
Let's put it this way, it's an issue because the ps4 can clearly reach 1080p and the day I accept 900p games on the norm this gen is when electronic companies start making 900p hdtvs ;-)

Aussiebeachbabe4118d ago

Good to see you crybaby girl blouses have something incommon. Don't like 900p just sell ps4 and just play pc. More games are going to be 900p on ps4 what are you going to cry about that as well. All you guys are the scourge of the gaming industry.

troylazlow4118d ago

Just to play devils advocate here. would we be willing to wait an extra month for a 1080p version of whatever game? or if not that would we be willing to bay an extra say $5 to cover the extra development cost?

user56695104117d ago

"I want the best for my money . to find out that a game has been gimped because one console cant handle it like its competition just feels cheated, and is a dirty practice." Lmao yall do know games have been gimp since these consoles launch. Stop acting like these consoles are some kinda revolutionary tech. Best for your money when every publishers basically tell you they're gonna nickel and dime you but you focus on res and fps. This Gen is a joke and I'm sure publishers notice it too.

Gimp because one console can't handle it? You do know these games are running mid to mid-high with missing gfx effects and low draw distance. And they say we are entitled elitist.

lemoncake4118d ago

It is very easy to say that but in reality these developers often work to tight deadlines and strict budgets.

xHeavYx4118d ago

I would agree with your comment if it wasn't that Ubisoft admitted to do it on purpose. They never said anything about deadlines, and I'm pretty sure they have no budget problems

BG115794118d ago

You know, most gamers work hard to gain money and still have a tight budget to buy games.
Because of that most gamers can't buy all the games the want. So they end up choosing the games they can afford. One can hope that the gamers reward those hardworking developing teams that worked hard to bring the gamers the best experience possible...
When a developing team chooses parity over the hard work to bringing each gamer the best experience, should they be rewarded?

donthate4118d ago (Edited 4118d ago )

I would rather see developers use the strengths of the console where it matters, not in squeezing out more pixels.

That is a waste of time these days.

Strength of platform are things like touch pad on the DS4, Kinect integration, trigger rumbles on Xbox One, or dual screen experience.

Increased immersion or more depth to the experience. A few pixels at the console level optimized makes relatively small difference mostly not noticeable.

In contrast, more energy making a game better. For instance, Titanfall ran at 792p, but was a freaken awesome game and sure you can bump up the effects on Last of Us remake, but it hardly makes a difference because the game is awesome and it is not because of the graphics (case in point PS3 version). Destiny is 1080p and so is Driveclub, but neither is a game I would play!

heavy:

You really think companies don't have budgets and budget problems?

Every company even cash flush companies like MS has major budgets to overhold. Only idiots thinks otherwise.

iDadio4118d ago

Ubi have dropped the ball big time on this, and as a result it inevitably effect sales.
Even if only 1000 people don't buy their game that's still 1000 sales lost. In regards to this AC it doesn't effect me as I'd rather play mordor than that stale trash but if this becomes a norm I will skip the games that purposefully limit one console for the other.

rdgneoz34118d ago

God, Mordor is too easy to get distracted it. Learned how to brand and I've been having fun doing power struggles to get my minions ranked up.

mechlord4118d ago

Lol these articles are funny. where were they last gen when MS were bragging over having more 2fps on some multiplayers

Now it doesn't matter?

Baccra174118d ago

Yes it is. We've had to deal with this crap now for 2 generations, and it needs to end.

I find it funny that back then, during the golden age of gaming, no one held the original xbox to "parity" because the Ps2 couldn't keep up. Hell, games were not released on PS2 and only on xbox simply because they couldn't do it on PS2!

But as soon as the 360 came out that went out the window and Sony, even though they had the more powerful machine, got crapped on left and right due to parity. Why the hell does soemone want to pluck down &400 dollars just to have an inferior version of the game because they have to be the same as the competitor? This B.S. has to stop.

lelo2play4118d ago (Edited 4118d ago )

"Is #PS4Parity Really That Important?"

No it's not. It's just another reason for fanboy ranting/wars. At the end of the day it's irrelevant. People will move on and in a couple of weeks there will be another reason (or topic) for fanboy ranting/wars.

Developers should do what they need to do to create games they can sell and stay in business. They aren't about to create 4 separate versions of every game because you say so. Get a little perspective.

xHeavYx4118d ago

You have no idea what you are talking about

Jaqen_Hghar4118d ago

It's adjusting the resolution or other effects which are adjustable in the PC version. Just tweak things slightly no one is asking for a completely different version.

CYCLEGAMER4118d ago (Edited 4118d ago )

@Heavy and most of the n4g community,
If you guys are seriously into there not being parity, then why wait till now to discuss it? You guys only seem to get upset and stand up for a cause when you feel that Sony is being slighted in some way.

The xbox one offers FREE DEDICATED SERVERS to ALL developers, but several devs have stated the reason they will not use the FREE dedicated servers is because they want parity in the online experience. Would you all agree that dedicated servers gives you a better online experience than peer to peer???

I am for non parity but not just for playstation like a lot of you. I am non parity for gaming as a whole. #fanboyssuck #wake up #noparity.

@disagrees
Dont be a coward, there is a reply button under my comment, speak up on your views on the subject at hand, how is my statement not true or valid??

@heavy
Graphics have nothing to do with servers, but what we are discussing has everything to do with the user experience with a game and dedicated servers offer a better online experience, do they not? Dont damage control dedicated servers because sony doesn't have the right now. I remember when the devs for call of duty were asked, they said they are not using them because they have their own and they want to make sure the experience is the same on both platforms.

xHeavYx4118d ago

What does graphics have to do with online servers? Where are your sources of developers saying why they don't use online servers?
Why not having free dedicated servers would be a problem, when PSN can withstand big games like Destiny with no problems?
Why are you using hashtags if this isn't Twitter?
#SMH

DragonKnight4118d ago

"The xbox one offers FREE DEDICATED SERVERS to ALL developers, but several devs have stated the reason they will not use the FREE dedicated servers is because they want parity in the online experience. Would you all agree that dedicated servers gives you a better online experience than peer to peer???"

Do you understand how monumentally insane your comment is? I want you to think about what you just said, because you just said that developers are willingly passing up something offered for FREE (also, without even sourcing these devs you claim said this stuff).

Contrary to what many seem to think, peer-to-peer networks are inexpensive, NOT free. You're saying that developers chose an option where they'd have to pay instead of not pay. And you actually think it's that black and white? If developers are choosing NOT to use MS' "free" dedicated servers, it's because there's more to it than "parity."

This isn't like graphics, where the experience is quantifiable and dependent on the hardware. Online infrastructure parity is impossible, dedicated servers or not, because of the varying types of network connections there are. So peer-to-peer or dedicated, experiences vary. This was never clearer to me than in the Souls games and the difference in online problems between Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. Yeah, dedicated servers cuts down on a lot of problems, but it doesn't eliminate them entirely.

So to reiterate, when you have hardware that will output literally the same experience to everyone else that has that hardware, it's VERY different from an online infrastructure that is dependent on MANY changing variables. Developers purposely gimping the graphics that millions all experience identically is very different that developers choosing a different networking solution that wouldn't be identical across the board anyway.

Spotie4118d ago

Wait until now? Ate you just getting into gaming? It's been a topic of debate for years now. There's just never been a blatant admission like this, at least that I can recall. Of course a big franchise from a well known developer being subjected to parity will cause an uproar.

Why is it that Xbox fans can't seem to make an argument without attaching irrelevant crap to it?

"Not from day one. The reasons for that are multiple," Bach said. "We started this project before these plans were locked down, so we didn't dare fiddle too much with it. Also, we're not Xbox One exclusive, so we needed a solution that would work on all platforms. We're on five platforms, so we need something that's Battlefield, not Xbox One."

Yes it is.

* actually being ‘pro-consumer’, by trying to provide everyone, regardless of console preference, with the exact same experience

Ok let's take a real life scenario.

So why you should bob over there who studied to be a lawyer get make more money than joe who works at a fast food place? Shouldn't the government try to give everyone the same experience?Do you know why??CUZ BOB OVER THERE BUSTED HIS REAR END TO GET A GOOD PAYING JOB.JUST LIKE SONY DID THERE HOMEWORK AND MADE A MORE POWERFUL CONSOLE.

TimmyShire4118d ago

Ha, that's not parity, that's Marxism.

BiggerBoss4118d ago

What you just said has absolutely nothing to do with anything that anybody is talking about. A better metaphor: if I bought two computer monitors, and one of them was more powerful and capable of higher resolutions, yet it only put out a limited amount because the weaker monitor couldn't handle the high resolution. Doesn't really make sense.

DanielGearSolid4118d ago

Pro Consumer?????????????????????? ?

SteamPowered4118d ago

Well, I wouldnt buy a Ferarri and govern it at 100km/hr. So I can see why people would be upset.

Megaplaynate4118d ago

Yes it is, I want the best experience my console can provide.

Glitchy as hell and flat story, nah this aint it. AC2, brotherhood and 4 were amazing games in every respective

Furesis1152d ago

Yeah i would say brotherhood and 4 were the best for me. I have not played the new ones and Unity was my last one. Seems like i made a good choice.

DarXyde1152d ago

I gave up after Revelations. Just couldn't bring myself to care anymore and I got burned out of the gameplay.

Definitely agree on 2 and Brotherhood though. Great games.

YourMommySpoils1152d ago

A Ubisoft AC game that's not glitchy? That will be the day.

Knightofelemia1153d ago

After constant glitches Arno being boring nah I am good I skipped Unity. I will always like the Ezio trilogy, Black Flag, Rogue, Odyssey, Syndicate. I use to love the franchise but now it feels stale and boring. But my list of favorite entries into the franchise will vary from other players favorite entries.

RaidenBlack1152d ago

Odyssey is a really well-made RPG game ... but it ain't a proper AC game, even though its part of the lore

ToddlerBrain1152d ago

It’s funny because, at launch, it was universally panned for being unplayable. It’s a great game that holds up today. I’m glad they fixed it.

staticall1152d ago

The only good things i remember from Unity are pretty graphics and really good descending mechanics (even though it sometimes didn't make much sense, when your character can drop down from like 10 meter height onto a flagpole perfectly).

Game is glitchy to this day, i was playing in it years after the release date (with all the DLCs) and it's still broken. You had to reload missions too often for my taste (characters do not spawn, you fall through the floor, getting stuck in falling/sitting/aiming animation, hidden blade stop working, assassination target running away at the start of the mission). Story was meh, searching for all the treasures wasn't enjoyable at all. Coop was pretty much useless, i've beaten every coop mission in solo. Helix rifts were awful as well.

Not saying i hate this game or anything, but it got too many problems.

Assassin's Creed (i know it's a controversial opinion) and Assassin's Creed 2 are still great to this day.

anast1152d ago

Unity was okay. I prefer Syndicate and Origins.
