Sony says that the 'disc-based delivery system will fall'

Destructoid writes: "Those crazy Sony people. First they tell us that Blu-ray is the wave of the future, and now they say that digital downloads are. Make up your mind!
At a developer conference in London, SCEE president David Reeves said that the future is the PlayStation Network. He points out that internal figures that show over 40 per cent of PS3 owners download games direct to their machines.

yeah i think there will always be a market for each.... at least while im alive:D

FreedomReign6579d ago

...
Wait did anyone read the article?

sticky doja6579d ago

Unless I can sell my used digital downloads on ebay then their will always be the need for hard copy software.

Proxy6579d ago (Edited 6579d ago )

It seems that when BluRay and HD-DVD were competing crazies were coming out all over the place screaming for a co-existence. Where did they go? If there can ever be a co-existence between formats it will be between digital downloads and optical disk. Just look at the music industry.

That said, I don't like DD, and would rather have hard copies. I'm much more confident in a properly stored disk lasting longer than any hard drive. I will alway buy disk over download. Also, I fear the next time I want to play some old retro games they will no longer be available for download, even though I've paid for it.

prunchess6577d ago

I prefer disc myself. Nothing like trading in those old games for something new.

Does anyone else not think that companies are just trying to eliminate the used games market with direct downloads?

This is an idiotic article... why can't two things be in the future??? Why can't blue-ray and PSN both be great ways to transmit data in the future? Siren is gonna be an episodic PSN game, then you got Metal Gear Solid 4 on Blu-ray disc... OH MY GOD!!!! THE FUTURE IS NOW!!!!!

I just blew my own mind.

Quit trying to spin Sony's words around to mean something that they obviously (to anyone that's not a complete moron who has no understanding of business whatsoever) don't mean.

juuken6579d ago

Bubbles to you.
It WAS stupid. Dx

some of these media people think we are all young people like most x360 fans hehe.

well im staying with disk formats the highest net connection we have where i live is 1mb

Fisher3396579d ago

Lots of areas in the US still have crappy internet, I got 3mbps and it sucks but alot of areas have less.

Also i think it's 3 out of 4 of the major ISP's are starting to limit Bandwidth, too or at least testing it out.

DD will never completely take over, Tons of ppl buy music on Itunes, yet CD's are still sold in stores.

Hell even money is electronic now, but people still carry around cash.

LastDance6578d ago

i cant even play MGO online because of lag...and i have the best internet connection available to us here haha.

DTClown6579d ago

Casual games are retarded for disc while major titles are just too big at the moment for download. Even WHEN the grid internet comes on and full HD movies can be downloaded in 2 seconds, I for one will ALWAYS want my physical copy for various reasons.

Sony will capitialize on both and we will all win.

jcgamer6579d ago

well said DTClown...bubbles up :)

ThanatosDMC6579d ago

PS3 is future proof so why is this news? We have expandable harddrives and Terabyte HDD are coming out.

SmokingMonkey6579d ago

when is the future?
360 says DD future in 5 years?
PS says DD future in 10 years?
how long will BLU-ray last? is the question.
i still prefer something you can hold to something intangible in cyber space. i like my collection.
plus NO RESALE value! bye bye GAMESTOP!

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle57d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde64d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy64d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga65d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit65d ago (Edited 65d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199265d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga65d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac65d ago (Edited 65d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman65d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box65d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion65d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7265d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7565d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit65d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14965d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7765d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
