I think it's closer to 10 then 5 years. Also, a lot of people still prefer physical media with it's packaging. Most peoples internet connections aren't fast enough yet to reasonably download games in a small amount of time.

Otherwise, I will continue to buy the games in disc format.

It's obvious he's talking long term, like 20 years. Of course one day DL will become the norm, but currently the infrastructure needed to supported it simply isn't there.

I think that blu-ray will be the last physical format considering it's capable of 100 gig storage. The blu-ray diode is also compatible with the recently announced 1T discs. Blu-ray is indeed the future.

It's obvious that the average gamer is not ready for downloading games, however its completely reasonable to think this way. After all when you figure the cost it takes of each disc plus printing, and cost labor that just 1 title takes then weight out compared to selling the digital download straight to the costumer, it's not that hard to see which direction any of the major gaming companies would like to take it. All there doing is cutting out the middle man. With any luck, perhaps the price to purchase these games will drop, but I seriously doubt it.

Personally I like Physical Disc media better than Digital Downloads . I think that Sony should always continue to sell games in Physical Blu-ray format, but upcoming games from SOE may be an exception.

Blu-ray will be the standard in disc media for the next 10 years at least and Digital Distribution wont become the standard for a long while because everyone doesn't have a super fast internet connection, there's a lot of people that still aren't computer literate, and there's still a lot of people that don't like buying things Online.

I like Digital Downloads for stuff on the Apple Store like TV shows for my Ipod Touch, but when it comes to actual games and full length movies, I want Physical Media.

Right now I just think that Sony is acknowledging the fact that Digital Distribution will most likely be the next step AFTER Blu-ray.

Music is better digital because you buy so much of it. Imagine your entire music collection on CDs. Scary how big it would be and how hard it would be to find a song. Now think of how many games you buy and how many you have. Its fine that there on disc and there is no need to change that. Besides ISPs will never go with digital downloads. They cut off my unlimited 370kb/sec line because I downloaded to much.

I personally don't think digital downloads will ever replace physical for console games and some extent films, it will definatly become more popular and used a hell of a lot more but there are many reasons why it will never directly replace, some of which have been mentioned but 2 which i see day in day out at work.

1. People like to hoard and collect, they like to have their shelves filled with their purchases, trust me i see it every day piles of the things and still some of them even videotapes.

2.Presents, kids will always be a major factor for consoles, and parents will want to buy them the latest games. Thats gonna mean physical lets be honest their arn't going to be many kids impressed with their mums and dads buying them a download. For years upon years kids will be unwrapping their new games on b'days and Xmas.

Digital downloads will be huge but it will be largly, a strict minority preferring to have everything on storage drive somewhere, but thats just what i think!!

I doubt most people will stop buying games on Blu-ray and just download them. Downloading works on PSN but those are small games. I doubt you'll see any 45GB games for sale on PSN.

I still want my game thru disc & not download. How can you trade your games or sell it on EBAY if all of your games are inside the HARD DRIVE? Think about it... before telling SONY that you don't need the DISC FORMAT as what Microsoft wants you to believe.

I've said this before it's a good alternative but will never take over, hard disc copies are here to stay. Who would really want to download Killzone 2 or Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots?

For arcade games and demos yes it's very small and it doesn't need to stay on your system. So of course people will download games like Warhawk, SOCOM: Confrontation, or WipeOut HD. For the real games this generation it's getting too big for downloads I would even question most PlayStation 2 games.

Plus you have to stay connected to the network to play if you don't have a connection, no games. With discs you have play anything without the internet / signing in if you just want a play without online friends messaging you constantly.

how is 40% everyone? not everyone will have a high speed connection for downloading games, and even if they did most people prefer a hard copy of the game, that way you can use that or rip on to your console.

DD is the future passed Blu Ray.. Its no secret that Broadband speeds arent even close to fast enough to DL HD movies and Games.. at todays speeds it would take 3-4 Days for a Blu Ray sized movie ( based on mass market comcast speeds ) and if you wanted to enjoy MGS4.. 50-55 days to DL... You can check my math, its not exact but close.. anyways thats just not gonna cut it.. MS can plead their HD DL service but those compressed Hd movies are a joke.. and they can brag that DD is the future (which in a way they are right) but Not Now and not even close to now..

Price and Speeds for internet that can handle the DD age would have to be Low and super fast for people of the masses to afford it and enjoy it

Computer games are huge - memory wise - and are going to get larger.

Music files are small and are easily downloadable. Not so with computer games.

You have the lengthy delay to download. Even though this will improve, so too will the size of games increase.

A big purchase item like this - and movies - the consumer prefers to have it in solid form - Note: PC downloads can usually burn it to disk. You get it instantly on purchase and the convenience and pleasure of putting in in your media library in the Living Room for all to see. lol.

Yes, there's going to be a place for DD and an opportunity for them to make money. But it won't completely replace having you own solid copy of the produce. Never, ever.

Well I Ive said it before and ill say it again Sony really screwed things up this generation. I loved the PS1 and PS2 they were great consoles. But when you get too ambitious and try to make a console to suit more than just gaming you tend to spread your self thin overall. This has always been Nintendos philosphy and microsofts as well. Blu-ray will be the fall of Sony. If Sony didnt put a BD player in the the PS3, it would be tied or even ahead of the 360 right know. Know that there changing there strategy doesnt it make you wonder whos interests they really care about??? the gamers??? I dont think so.

You wont hear any first party developers complain about coding to Blu-ray because Sony gives them the resources and all the time in the world to complete their games to be as close to a AAA title that they can be. For third party developers its a different story. They like to try and follow a 24 month cycle on development for their games so, when they succeed that limit the more time they they need the more costly it becomes. So I feel bad for you guys who think Sony and the ps3 are the best things to come out since sliced bread. I bought the DL version of Warhawk. That said, I was so disappointed with the limitations and restrictions that I vowed to never buy a DL game from the PSN if I can get a disk version. Your going to make me install it either way (GT5:P) and with the Disk, someone else can play too without destroying my stats online. DLC is nice, but those of us that play a lot of games would require massive storage and that requires money that could be used on games.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.
