Demon's Souls still feels fresher than its "Dark" successors | Eurogamer

Demon's Souls doesn't just hold up, it feels fresher and more innovative today than either of its "Dark" brethren.

Couldn't agree more with this article. (that's why I had to post it :D)

radler4123d ago

I think Dark Souls was a really good game, but Dark Souls 2 is just wholly unremarkable in every regard. It seems glaringly obvious now that Namco relegated development of that game to some b-team while they shifted the talented folk over to Bloodborne. I just hope that they don't leave the Dark Souls franchise to be run into the ground by the idiots that made the second game.

shammgod4123d ago

Well said bubs.
It was a good game, but compared to demons and DS1, lacking. My biggest complaint was the level design after the first few areas. So lazy and unimaginative. Disappointing.

Mega244123d ago

Namco has nothing to do with Bloodborne, Bloodborne is being published under Sony.

PurpHerbison4123d ago (Edited 4123d ago )

@Mega24

I know damn well you knew he meant From Software and not Namco. Honest mistake.

thorstein4122d ago

I agree as well, but haven't been able to play since I get invaded all the time.

I wonder if there will be a patch when they take down the servers that allows us to continue to play without being connected.

nitus104122d ago

You have always been able to play the Souls series without being on-line.

The on-line component of the Souls series mainly allows you to get help or be invaded although in the case of Demon Souls the "tendencies" to work properly.

When on-line in Dark Souls one way to stop or reduce getting invaded while still being able to get help is to try and keep your level below 15. Pyromancy is really useful as is weapon and armour upgrading. One or two hits with a level 15 hand flame spell usually will kill off a level 100 player fairly quickly, although a fight between a level 15 player and level 100 player should not happen.

It is annoying when you can see that some players are cheats such as those who set themselves up as level 0 (minimum level is 1) and ridicules or infinite life (max life is less then 3,000).

It must be noted that some players are really good and have been able to complete the game at level one without cheating. Upgrading and enhancement of weapons and armour is not cheating. Increasing your life while maintaining the same level is.

miyamoto4122d ago

Great Post, buddy.

Demon's Souls is the ray of hope for Japanese RPG developers and gamers.

LightDiego4123d ago

True, Demon's Souls is special, i hope we get a sequel for the game. Even better that Bloodborne and Demon's Souls 2 will be exclusive for PS4.

nucky644123d ago (Edited 4123d ago )

demon souls 2 - it takes my breath away just thinking about it

Agent20094123d ago

With all due respect, sequel are overrated - I'd much rather have more of those "successors" instead. Bloodborne is kind of a successor.

MEsoJD4123d ago

Just because it's exclusive... Honestly, Dark Souls is the best of the Souls series. Awesome world, lore, content, flexibility, no grass hoarding, no world tendency, etc... I like Demons Souls, but I didn't go back after the Dark Souls series.

torchic4123d ago (Edited 4123d ago )

whichever one you played first will be the best one, that's generally how i've seen discussions play out on the internet.

I agree with you on Dark Souls I being the best of the three. the fact that Demon's Souls is exclusive also wins it brownie points amongst fans.

MEsoJD4122d ago (Edited 4122d ago )

@torchic

Demons Souls was my first. Bought it, when it first came out.

Xof4123d ago (Edited 4123d ago )

I love the hell out of Dark Souls and have tried to get into Demons Souls several times. I just can't. Maybe it's the claustrophobic level design, maybe it's the Mario 64 level hub (something I've never liked).

Last time I tried to get into it, after DS2, the thing that immediately threw me off was the godawful draw distance. Most of the difficulty seemed to come from the fact that the game wouldn't render anything further than a few meters from my character.

So, yeah: I respectfully disagree with the assertion that Demon's Souls offers anything to top its successor.

A012345674123d ago (Edited 4123d ago )

"Maybe it's the claustrophobic level design, maybe it's the Mario 64 level hub (something I've never liked). "

That description alone suggests you've never played through Demon's Souls.

"godawful draw distance".

Then this comment flat out confirmed it.

I smell PC troll...

Xof4123d ago

I don't mind if you disagree with me, but at least behave with a modicum of courtesy. Only one of us is trolling here, and it sure as hell isn't me.

Sly-Lupin4123d ago

...That you think Demons Souls doesn't have a level hub indicates that YOU have never played Demons Souls. Because it does. Very obviously. Maybe you're confusing it with Dark Souls?

And the draw-distance in Demons Souls isn't uniform. Some levels have really decent draw distances, some have really crappy draw distances. It depends more on the lighting of the level and the amount of clutter. That one bit in one of the early levels where you're "inside" a bridge is really, really bad for example.

A012345674123d ago (Edited 4123d ago )

@Sly-Lupin

I'm referring to his comment on claustrophobic level design, hence why I said it suggests he hasn't played THROUGH Demon's Souls.

The nexus is a matter of opinion and was just a part of the sentence I copied. To clarify I should have omitted that part.

Further more, I cannot recall a single draw distance issue I ever had, not even at the bridge in the beginning when looking from the hanging posts.

Especially, despite the night/fog in terms of atmosphere, the entire level of the Fool's Idol Archstone you can see any of the interconnecting bridges and towers (assuming that there is lighting at the areas).

internationterrorist4123d ago (Edited 4123d ago )

You have not played Demon's Soul's. I own both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. First if you played Dark Souls and Demon's Soul's. You would know that Demon's Soul's preformance was superior quality vs Dark Souls. Dark Souls had horrible frame rates drops and back stabbing was over powerful. Demon's Soul's had better frames rates and back stabbing was better balanced than Dark Souls 1 .

torchic4123d ago

Dark Souls had framerate problems in ONE area (that you could skip) otherwise the game was freaking solid everywhere else.

MysticStrummer4123d ago

If you don't like a hub and you don't like the level design I can respect that if not agree with it. The level design was that way on purpose. The game was supposed to make players uncomfortable and it did.

Your complaint about draw distance… I have no idea what you're talking about.

Loved Dark Souls, never played DS2, but Demon's Souls was the best of the three imo.

internationterrorist4122d ago (Edited 4122d ago )

Xof@

As in xbonefanboys you are a trolling. Alot of xbonefanboy want to down play Demon's Soul's and Bloodborne because they are both Playstation exclusives.

torchic@

Dark Souls had framerate problems in ONE area (that you could skip) otherwise the game was freaking solid everywhere else.

Really? Well that's not what Hidetaka Miyazaki said.

Dark Souls dev sorry for frame-rate issues, uncertain on sequel

"We don't know if the users will forgive

Dark Souls developer From Software has admitted to "technical difficulties" which cause troubling frame-rate issues in its hard-as-nails role-player.

From Software felt out of its depth with the game's huge scope, Dark Souls' creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed to Edge.

"Yes, there were technical difficulties," Miyazaki said. "I don't believe that it's okay to have them, but realistically speaking, it was quite a large-scale game - even in terms of budget and expectations.

"So we're very sorry for the trouble we've caused by our processing errors and bugs from Japan. It was a title that we haven't really experienced in all aspects, so there were areas where we felt our technical side couldn't keep up with the game's scope, like an increasingly growing ache."

Miyazaki considered working on the game "a learning curve", but is unsure whether From Software will ever revisit the Dark Souls universe.

"We don't even know if we'll have another chance. We have the confidence that we can improve from our mistakes this time and create an even better Dark world, but we don't know if the users will forgive us for the mistakes."

Demon's Souls is a masterpiece, I finally beat it about 2 months ago. I would love a remaster of that game for PS4 using BloodBorne's engine.

nucky644123d ago

demon souls remaster?!....hells, yea!

Inception4123d ago

Mate, that's awesome and you should ask the idea to Shuhei Yoshida. Maybe he will talk to From Soft / Jpn Studio about that possibility!

HighResHero4123d ago

Yes and possibly with some more content.
Release it a few months before DS2.

Kevlar0094123d ago

It's a shame I don't have a PS3. Would really like to try this game.

Inception4123d ago

Too bad mate. A couple months ago sony made it free for PS+ users. But the game itself already cheap (it's $20 on PSN). If you really want to try it, maybe you should buy a second-hand PS3 (it's cheap) or...waiting if sony / From Soft will remaster the game for PS4.

HighResHero4123d ago (Edited 4123d ago )

Wait until you can find a great deal on a PS3 and pick up the Bluray for around $10 US. (I would buy it new if it's still available to support the devs and Atlus)

Remy_Chaos4123d ago

Wait for the Black Friday sales, PS3 despite its horrible beginnings is now definitely well worth it. Also Demon's Souls goes cheap on Amazon last I checked.

Sony Remade Demon’s Souls, So Why Won’t It Touch Bloodborne?

The Outerhaven writes: Bloodborne is still one of PlayStation’s most beloved exclusives, but it remains trapped on PS4. Meanwhile Demon’s Souls got a full PS5 remake. But why?

thorstein14h ago

Demon's Souls was a PS3 game.

Bloodborne is PS4 and can be played on a PS5.

There's no need for a remaster.

Relientk7711h ago

I completely agree with you on this. If you want remasters or remakes give us games from the PS1 or PS2 era like Legend of Dragoon.

Eonjay6h ago

I would say thats a personal oponion trying to be passed off as a law. Truth is thre are many people who would love a remaster.upgrade so they can play Bloodborne at 60 FPS. People would literally love that.

shadowhaxor8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

I mentioned that in my article, did you read it? I literally pointed out this is exactly why the game is still doing well, and why Sony has zero reason to remake/remaster it.

And there are plenty of PS4 to PS5 remaster/remakes, to counterpoint that.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
GTA V Expanded & Enhanced
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut
Control: Ultimate Edition
Death Stranding Director’s Cut
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection
The Last of Us Part II Remastered

Eonjay6h ago

Either because they technically can't because From Soft wont allow them too, or because From Soft is sorking on the sequal, remaster themselves. Therre is a third option of course and that would be that they are working on it

MinnesotaFatts3h ago

Some part of me wonders if there's some sort of corporate war going on at Sony.

Daver6h ago

I want a new one not a remaster

victorMaje5h ago

TLoU got the remaster & then the remake treatment.
Where is the next bloodborne, or remaster, or remake?

Goodguy014h ago

What it needs is a ps5+pc release. The game absolutely needs a 4k60 update. Lots of money sony is sleeping on while the souls genre is still hot.

MinnesotaFatts3h ago

Tell me you don't know what a remaster is without telling me.

Bloodborne is infamously capped at 30fps on either system--a bizarre design choice given that speed and reaction time is central to the gameplay systems. This capped performance was never patched out officially, unless you jailbreak and mod your console. A remaster for modern hardware, not the infamously finicky PS4 devkits, would be a great way to both hyper-optimize the game *and* drive sales for the PS5, which still doesn't have a system seller title.

RaiderNation8h ago

There might be some licensing red tape they cant get around?

shadowhaxor8h ago

That'd be interesting, but Sony owns the IP 100%. So, I can't see how that is part of the issue, if there is even one.

RaiderNation4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Maybe Sony isnt interested in doing it without the assistance of Miyazaki and he's not interested? (Just spit-balling).

MinnesotaFatts3h ago

That's the issue according to FROMSOFT. They'd *love* to do a remaster, but Sony won't even return their calls.

Inverno8h ago

Because they're saving that for the PS6 to lure in all the suckers that will think they're making a sequel, but the whole gen will pass by and From won't ever touch it because Song doesn't care for either Demon or Blood outside of remakes.

Furesis5h ago

Because they made them do something else, then they canceled it and who knows what they are doing these days. They dont understand what they have and honestly i dont think they know what they are doing either.

blacktiger4h ago

How bout forget remade and start making new game pls?

Oh.. when did PS5 get Horizon 5 ?

How many years ? 5 years !
but they got no problem here right ?

Halo CE is 2001 game

What about if PS5 get Sunset over drive
How many years ?

Dexterio49d ago (Edited 49d ago )

And PC gamers wallets always lose :) Gotta upgrade that graphics card constantly because you want to experience all those hyper realistic graphics with solid frame rate LMAO!🤣

Gridknac49d ago

LOL, you upgrade your console every 5-7 yrs. When you do get that shiny new console it has 3yr old pc tech in it. Not to mention 1/2 of your purchased games may or may not work and oftem show very little improvement. If you were to get this type of a remaster from sony, it would cost you another $70. PC can run pretty much any game ever made and will give you the option to remaster it as little or as much as you like for FREE. PC sets the bar and your console attempts the bar 3yrs later.

DustMan49d ago

LOL. I updated my 1080ti to a 3080 for $300 in a part swap. that was in late 2020. I'm still crushing games at higher frame rates lol. Bought the PC in late 2017 with an i7-8700 cpu. Still. Going. Strong. Maybe upgrade next year or around the decade mark.

In the meantime I'll play every game imaginable via emulation, and new releases as they come.

Good-Smurf49d ago

The only reason Sony won't budge with this is that they probably want it to be more than remaster which is how ShadPS4 is doing to Bloodborne right now provided that you have strong enough hardware.

Arslan10049d ago

This article shows how Bloodborne can now run at 4 K and 60 FPS on PC via emulation — a big leap compared with the PS5 backward-compatibility version. and for translation help try: https://www.translationserv...

andy8549d ago

I really dont know why theyre holding on to this so much when its been asked for so much. Unless there'd a plan of a demons souls style remake

Miraak82 49d ago

Probably because their expectations of how much a game should sell is too high now a days, it only hit above 9 mil in sales in the coarse of 10 years. When they have franchises that sell x2 or x3 that number in half the time it's probably hard for them to justify the cost since they've gone the coarse of appealing to the widest audiences ... and Bloodborne isn't exactly that type of game . Even looking at trophies only a small percentage beat it let alone got half way through it sadly .

andy8549d ago

That's because of difficulty and not really much cost in remastering games. Look at what the PC community do for free. Its guaranteed profit for Sony.

Miraak82 49d ago

It's also a Fromsoft game and uses it's own propriety engine so unless they go to FS themselves or remake it like Demons Souls remake it's probably not worth the hassle from them .
