If you have played any shooter with a decent pace at 30/60/120/144+ fps, it's easy to feel the game become more responsive and smoother as you go up in fps. In short higher fps = lower latency and high latency is bad

Why do so many people insist you can't see more then 30 frames a second? It's pretty easy to see the difference and you can definitely feel it when playing a game.

Increase in gameplay smoothness at higher frame rates.

What's great is that it lets you make smooth one-liners.

There were times when I had some doubts about the impact 60fps had on gameplay, then I played StarCraft 2, League of Legends and Dota 2 on my two computers, one being a decently powerful desktop, while the other was my laptop, with a dedicated GPU, but still quite inferior to my desktop.

One would play all the aforementioned games at 60+, while my laptop would give me a constant and very stable 30 fps. I will say that above 100 fps, even fluctuations between 100 to 130, I wasn't noticing it. Unstable fps under 60 fps are easier to notice, and they are downright hard to miss when under 30 fps. It's also extremely easy to notice the differences between 30 and 60+fps when playing the game, everything is just smoother and it makes the overall experience better.

Some say that 60 fps is not needed in some game genres, fine, but to say that 60 fps is nothing more than marketing and isn't noticeable and can't affect gameplay, that I simply cannot agree with.

I wish Destiny was 60fps. But it's not. And you can tell so very easily after playing just one match of Battlefield, which feels so much note responsive and "live." That's what's great about it for me. I play Destiny because it's a fun game. But I'm not going to ever say frame rate doesn't matter either.

We've been conditioned for generations that 24-30fps is enough for video. It is good enough for games, or was, until people started getting accustomed to higher and higher frame rates, and they now claim that 30 is too choppy to be playable.

Problem is, if you make it the priority to double the frames, you are doubling the data throughput and you might have to cut visual effects. If I had the choice, I'd go with better visuals at 30 than fewer visuals at 60. If the developer can do both, that's different.

There's a thousand examples. But does anyone else have the last of us on ps4. There's an option to turn on 30 fps. Turn it on and play. Then turn it off and go back to 60 and tell me it doesn't matter.

First of all there's a big difference between 60 and 30 FPS. I've seen League players with over 100 FPS and it looks almost like a different game in how it moves and reacts compared to my 30 FPS.

60 FPS helps games retain or even enhance their graphical qualities over time. If you play SSB Melee you notice how smooth everyone moves and it makes the simple realism it went for stay crisp and fluid, it hasn't aged for the worse one bit. 60 FPS more accurately conveys movement, with 30 you're missing out on 30 frames of tiny detail.

I'd much rather have a game run at 900p 60 fps than 1080p 30 FPS. Mario Kart 8 is 720p on the game pad and having 60FPS makes it still run amazing even compared to 1080p.

The author of this article is so ignorant he sounds like a religious guy trying to convince us that evolution is a myth. If he truly can not see the difference in frame rate then he either has a sight problem or a brain problem, but I will assume 99.9% of people can and will see the difference. Once you get used to playing games at 60 or more fps, you'll feel very uncomfortable playing at 30fps, you feel eye strain, and maybe even get a headache after an hour or so, but at 60 or above you can play for hours and don't feel your eyes tired at all. Also trying to compare gaming to movies is just plain BS, and it confirms the level of ignorance by the author, he obviously doesn't understand how a camera works and how motion blur affects our perception of movement and smoothnes.

And to the guy who said that 30fps, when "done right" is amazing, what the hell does that even mean?

Side by side, you can really tell but when they're both not side by side it's not a problem, unless you're a fooking loony tune that can only watch a telly when it's adjacent to another telly.

This so called "issue" shouldn't be talked about as often as it does.

Finally some serenity on this FPS subject. For those that were already playing games on their consoles about 20 years ago, I'm sure that all this fuzz over FPS sounds very familiar to the famous bit-era war: "how many bits does your console have?" has now been replaced by "which is the framerate of this game?". Well, I have a question: what about playing the game? Experience it? What about it's gameplay? I would not be surprised if game developers and publishers started marketing their games with impact phrases like "do the math", just like Atari did for Jaguar with their first "64 bit" console. Well, I know I might sound rude but since "hardcore gamers" themselves are more interested in judging each other instead of simply enjoying their games maybe that's the proper marketing strategy that they deserve. What was a 64 bit console? Who knows! But it must be important, whatever that means. What is a FPS? oh, it's the number of frames that passes through your screen in the interval of a second. And now let's just forget about the actual game: let's not hold our controlers, just leave it on the table. You can turn off the sound features as well, it won't matter. Actually, why not avoid getting distracted with all these images jumping on the screen? Just cover it with something handy but make sure you can clearly see the frame rate at the corner of the screen. And there you go, now judge it. It's impressive how people will readily jump in a war over the nature of a game based simply on it's FPS. Please excuse me for my technical ignorance, I just thought that much before worrying abot the FPS subject, I should play the game and say for myself how does that feel.

As far as I'm concern if its not a fighter then 30fps is fine. 60fps is more for competitive play.

All I know is that according to the xbox fanboys it matters and it has to be a locked 60fps, unless its one of their many games that's only capable of 30fps and then its ok.

Best example I know of is League of Legends.

It bugged out on me once or twice and I had to play the game at 30FPS. It was a nightmare to play.

I can't enjoy 60fps after playing a few hours on a 120hzscreen and people still argueing about 30 fps being. Okay. Cant belive it really games are much more enjoyable at high framerate.

Higher framerate is far better, end of story. Will I choose to not get a game if it's 30fps? Of course not, but I still like 60fps a lot more than 30.

I've never been bothered about framerate and (while I know this is my issue more than anything) if you showed me a game running I probably couldn't tell you whether it was running at 60 or 30fps. Having said that when playing The Last of us remastered I opened the options screen after an hour or so of playing and checked the 'lock at 30fps for better shadow quality' option, played a minute or so like that, thought 'screw this' and went back to 60.

It's still nowhere near a deal breaker for me but I have to admit when viewing them side by side like that 60 was undeniably better and seemed to help with the immersion for me.

30fps is not exactly a deal breaker, but why would anyone want to settle for less than 60fps? Games run much smoother at 60fps.

Frame rate is important. But frame rates 30 FPS and higher are all that are required. Sure higher frame rates will yield what feels like a smoother experience.

But games where frame rates dip to sub-20 levels are unacceptable this generation as gamers will see noticeable pauses and stutter at that rate which can dramatically affect gameplay.

60FPS should be the minimum. It's just so much more comfortable on the eyes.
When I go from PC (60-144FPS G Sync which is amazing) to PS3(15FPS?), it takes me about 15-20 minutes before my eyes adjust back to that low FPS. I can actually see each frame as it appears on the screen when playing PS3 like watching a picture slideshow.

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.

Wuchang is great. Nine Sols didn’t have a physical copy so I never played it but I’ve heard good things so I will check it out. I stopped playing sports games many years ago when before the card dlc’s or whatever they’re called.
