After Vita, where does Sony's handheld development go?

GGG debates what platforms Sony might release low-budget, mobile-friendly games should they decide to not release a successor to the PS Vita several years from now.

IF they releases a vita successor then i have a strong feeling it will not only be a portable powerhouse but also serve as a possible console by connecting it to a tv at home.

They have shown that there is that potential with the PSP GO even if their marketing was a bit meh. And the PS TV being a standalone vita in a box.

Having one unit that does both would cover both demographics of portable users and tv users. They have the technology and the willingness to create such a product.

the bigger question is will the public buy into it? Speaking only for myself i know i would.

UltimateMaster4271d ago (Edited 4271d ago )

Nah. The memory cards are really what's dragging it down.

mrbojingles4271d ago

I don't know man. I love my Vita but even if it had MicroSD/SD I don't think the general consumer would care much more. Maybe a small, limited boost from core gamers but that'd be it.

If they want to continue in the handheld market, then they need to make it a tablet with dedicated controls (tried to phone), or on that has a controller that can effortlessly slides on and off the tablet.

like this but better

IMO a PSTablet is the best route and it aims to fix both the handheld division and boost tablet sales for the company, way to go since it serves more as a multipurpose device and being a tablet not only allows you to sell to PlayStation gamers, but also casual tablet owner. The size of a tablet allows you to squeeze more power, and most importantly a better battery into the device for extended gaming use, and the bigger screen will also be better for gaming.

Looking at todays mobile processors for the $200 - $300 tablet range, their GPUs are already starting to reach last-gen console quality with the $300 dollar range actually being there (NVIDIA Shield 2). If Sony partners with AMD again they can aim for the R5 m230 GPU for the tablet which should offer overall performance comparable to the Wii U.

And all of this can be done right now, but considering the fact that such a device is likely to launch 2016 - 2018, and by then mobile performance will be even better and you could easily squeeze all of that into a nice package for $300 or less.

Sony's Xperia Z phones and tablets are their next mobile gaming devices. They are losing major market share around the world with regards to their cell phone business, and one way they can save their struggling mobile division is to somehow tie it in with their successful Playstation division.

This could potentially draw in the tens of millions of Playstation gamers to help grow their cell phone business. Seeing as how you can connect a PS3 controller to the Xperia Z3, and their Xperia line has some fantastic looking displays, it would seem to be a natural fit.

It really doesn't make sense anymore to invest in a dedicated handheld gaming device, especially when they have a mobile division that could really benefit from the Playstation brand. Sony has a dedicated core fanbase, and they haven't yet managed to leverage that popularity in a meaningful way with Playstation fans.

Sony should leverage the PlayStation brand on all their electronics products and their respective form factors.

Xperia smartphone should be replaced by PlayStation Phone & Xperia tablets with PlayStation Pad all having gaming as unique feature with detachable bluetooth controller

Vaio laptops with PlayStation branding built for gaming
Bravia TV's as PlayStation branding for gaming features

thats what i thought the original Vita was going to be. in fact thats what i was thinking of that the PS4 was going to be. essentially a a portable home console.

breakpad4271d ago

the only thing that Sony needs right now for handheld marke ISNOT a new console neither a phone, PS VITA is excellent device ..they need to throw some money for MON HUN release that s all nothing else ..they need to grab next MonHUn (cononical numbered) and then you see VIta shine and its sales exploding

gangsta_red4271d ago

There is no way Sony will be releasing another dedicated vide game portable machine.

They will be focusing on their tablets and phones and pushing for PSNow to play across all those platforms.

Sony does not want to risk sinking money into a dedicated handheld market again especially with high end tech.

All the tiny indie games, 3DS titles and casual little mobile games has already proven you don't need super space age tech to be successful in the portable video game market.

pwnsause_returns4271d ago

IIf anything, PSTV is gonna serve them as a test bed to see if theres an interest in the device... if they see sucess, we might see something like a hypbrid next gen just as darthv72 said.

Phones + PS Now. Releasing another dedicated handheld would just be throwing money away.

SteamPowered4271d ago

I would much rather see a peripheral rather than Playstation going to cell phones.

WeAreLegion4271d ago

A proper PlayStation Phone. The Xperia Play had so much potential, but poor hardware design and lack of support killed it. Make a phone. Full Android software support on top of PlayStation exclusives would be incredible! Plus, you'd have physical controls for all Android games out of the box. That's a selling point for many people. Get to it, Sony!

dcj05244271d ago

Problem is the battery would die in 3 hours. Hopefully the new graphite (I think) batteries will boost battery times to 2-3 days.

WeAreLegion4271d ago

Let's hope. Sony is a bit of a strange creature when it comes to battery life. My Xperia Tablet Z had great battery life when I bought it. A few months back, they released an update that literally doubled the battery life for it, however. I don't know how, but they did. All three of us Xperia Tablet Z owners were shocked that nobody was talking about it. It was like we had just seen the world's best magic show and now nobody would believe us.

One of the biggest issues with the PSV is the support it naps bee. given. I was loving what was being shown off on the PSV at the start and went out and got one on day one. I got MNR which I loved on the PS3 but the lack of online for the PSV killed it for me. I got UCGA and the graphics were amazing but it just did not give me the same excitement 1,2 and 3 did. I also got LBP psv and again for some reason I did not enjoy it anywhere near as much as the ps3 versions and the story mode was very short.
The last game I got for my psv was resistance and a lot was made of the mp on the psv but again it felt poor. I had a lot of issues where I would just die after I had just come back alive and there were not too many people online with it.

After that I did not really feel excited for any game on the psv and sold it and have not felt like I am missing it due to the amount of quality games the 3ds has and I thought this time round the psv would be the winner for me.

I don't think Sony should give up on the handheld market but I do think they need to look at what Nintendo do right in this market and bring there own style to the market.

For the psv hardware terms is amazing but its the software that has killed it.

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose37d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE37d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername36d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy37d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde36d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8636d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8636d ago (Edited 36d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300037d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle36d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
