This is something I completely agree with. The so called "Next-gen" systems are filled with very over bloated AAA titles. The majority of western gamers and developers feel photo realistic graphics and Ultra deep storytelling is the future. To bad the gameplay itself has taken a backseat.
Many of today's AAA games play like a interactive movie. You can literally hit one or two buttons and beat the game. However, Indie games can suffer from the same problem if there is a overexposure them. Alot of indie games tend to blend in with each other.
The reason why AAA development is through the roof is because of the "bigger means better" mentality. In order for developers like EA and Ubisoft to get these games to the "next-gen" level. They spend insane amounts of money. And then games like Destiny and Watch Dogs come out as results. Nice to look at, but the gameplay just isn't all there (if any).
Gamers tend to be there own worst enemies though. When all the talk about Xbox One and Ps4 is based on resolution, and 60 Frames per second. Instead of gameplay, you know, What makes a game a game. Developers get the impression that graphics is all gamers care about.
