Oculus Working on Avatar-Based Social Software for Gear VR

VRFocus - Social virtual reality (VR) will undoubtedly be a huge pull for head-mounted displays such as the Oculus Rift when developers finally figure it out. However it presents a whole new set of challenges beyond what companies such as Oculus VR are dealing with right now. That said, the company's Chief Technology Officer John Carmack revealed that his team has been working on an avatar-based social software for Samsung's Gear VR smartphone-based VR head-mounted display (HMD).

Maybe Im being a bit over paranoid here but is anyone else concerned about long term health risks with VR?
I dont mean from occasional use, I mean those people (and there will be some) who game using it all day everyday, year after year. There is no way they could test products for this ammount of use, and I can just imagine it causing stuff like brain tumours. Im no doctor, so I have no idea if thats even possible. But years ago, people didnt even know smoking was bad for you.
Personally I dont think I'll get into VR, it seems too un-social for me when I constantly have family around (although it does sound AMAZING) but I still feel a bit skeptical about the whole idea.

Don't worry about it. It's as bad as phones or TVs. If you don't get a tumour from watching Bob The Builder then you won't from this. Common misconception

Its going to be just ike Demolitian Man. People will no longer have sex and all restaurants will become Taco Bells.

Pandamobile4258d ago

Dude it's just a screen, some sensors and some circuitry. It's not powered by a nuclear battery.

Clown_Syndr0me4258d ago

I know but surely having a screen like an inch away from your eyes for extensive periods is bad for your eyes atleast?
I don't particularly care, I can just see this becoming a thing at some point.

Pandamobile4258d ago

The lenses focus your eyes on the image in such a way that it's not going to stress out your eyes unless you have trouble seeing already.

It's a valid question. It has nothing to do with power or electromagnetic emissions...

That's fine. GT7 would overshadow it anyway at it has open wheel and regular cars.

Should have been spending their time updating Squadrons with better resolution, frame rate, haptics, etc as there isn't a game like that on PS VR 2 yet.

But it's EA. They don't think.

Babadook71103d ago

I agree. It would sell better on PSVR2 right now.

Knushwood Butt1103d ago (Edited 1103d ago )

A wasted opportunity, but I don't buy EA / Codemasters stuff anyway. Grid Legends just came out on Plus and I haven't touched it. Why would I when I have GT7 and PSVR2?

Abnor_Mal1103d ago

Not into F1 racing, but still a missed opportunity.

ApocalypseShadow1103d ago

That's where opportunity presents itself that they could offer something else that other developers haven't offered yet. Yeah. There's No Man's Sky. But a space game with a story would be great. Like the old days with Colony Wars.

Abnor_Mal1103d ago

Exactly, they could have possibly lured more players just from the inclusion of a vr mode.

I miss Colony wars and G-Police, Low-Fi I hope will scratch that itch when it releases. We also need a vr War/Starhawk game.

Knushwood Butt1103d ago

Just watched the trailer of Low-Fi. Most definitely on my radar.
