I’m leaving Mojang

Notch :

"I don’t see myself as a real game developer. I make games because it’s fun, and because I love games and I love to program, but I don’t make games with the intention of them becoming huge hits, and I don’t try to change the world. Minecraft certainly became a huge hit, and people are telling me it’s changed games. I never meant for it to do either. It’s certainly flattering, and to gradually get thrust into some kind of public spotlight is interesting.

A relatively long time ago, I decided to step down from Minecraft development. Jens was the perfect person to take over leading it, and I wanted to try to do new things. At first, I failed by trying to make something big again, but since I decided to just stick to small prototypes and interesting challenges, I’ve had so much fun with work. I wasn’t exactly sure how I fit into Mojang where people did actual work, but since people said I was important for the culture, I stayed."

Thank you & good luck for the future, and give a million dollars to me for being supportive.

XBLSkull4231d ago

Go on, take the money and run

Magicite4231d ago

Notch was the soul of Mojang, basically MS bought an empty vessel. Money well wasted.

ThunderPulse4231d ago

He took my money when I bought it on PS4 now M$ is going to not give me any updates for it.

Clown_Syndr0me4231d ago

@dmitrijs88

You are so wrong. Do you realise how much money they make from merchandise?

The game is a one time buy, there are no paid for DLCs or anything and the bulk comes from merchandise.

If there is an Xbox exclusive sequel, you cannot deny it will move units - because it will. Target an audience while theyre young and impressionable, children that are fans of Minecraft are going to want an Xbox if that's the only place they can play Minecraft 2.

Ofcourse, this is all speculation. If Sony bought Minecraft I have a feeling everyone would be supporting it.

UltimateMaster4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

I just hope that he made a deal where he actually gets money out of it rather than having the 2.5 billion in "mojan".

Because if the money is in Mojan, than that would mean he lost everything in this transaction and earned nothing.

If I would have been him, I would have asked 500 million $, and then retire.

@dmitrijs88
Exactly, was is Microsoft to gain from this?
It's not like they can create the next Minecraft, all they have is a logo.

Everyone lost in this transaction, especially Microsoft.

hay4231d ago

Now that's the Notch I know.

"I don’t see myself as a real game developer."
"As soon as this deal is finalized, I will leave Mojang"
"It’s not about the money."

Lou-Cipher4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

@ Clown_Syndr0me

"If Sony bought MineCraft I have a feeling everyone would be supporting it."

There would still be alot of people not OK with Sony buying it. (The people that play MineCraft on PC & Xbox)

If Sony did buy Mojang, they wouldn't run it into the ground. Microsoft has a SIGNIFICANT history of downgrading almost every company they have ever touched, While Sony has never downgraded a company they have purchased,and many times they have improved it significantly.

Microsoft butchers game budgets in favor of larger advertising budgets. PLUS,taking a Multiplatorm Company and now having it's future games released on the lowest common denominator is annoying for most, and that is just a couple reasons that gamers are upset with MS buying a good to great company.

Notch is pretty funny isn't he? "When I get my money I'm out."

theshonen88994231d ago

It'd be even worse if he got his money and kept going despite losing interest. That would be the true injustice.

lelo2play4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

Poor Notch. Now he has to apply for unemployment and receive unemployment benefits. /s

Enemy4231d ago

You're joking, right? I think even he realizes Mojang is going to be buried under Microsoft. He's getting his money either way.

saladthieves4231d ago

@Enemy

We don't really know what Microsoft has planned for Mojang. Perhaps a Minecraft sequel?

Legion214231d ago

I don't think you always say it's about money. Notch didn't want the spotlight and responsibilities so he sold his company. Obviously he's going to sell it for as much as he could get.

PCGamingNoobs4231d ago

Another clever genuinely nice guy driven to insanity by the crazy pathetic hordes of gamers giving abuse about something and not realizing the affect.

TheRedButterfly4231d ago

Reminds me a lot of Dong Nguyen (Flappy Bird dev.). Some people don't want the spotlight, and that's more than respectable.

Lord knows I'd be thrilled to be that successful, but I wouldn't want 50 million people examining everything I do. Just give me a small job at 343/Bethesda and save the PR for O'Connor/Howard. :D

equal_youth4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

i dont get this guy. he sold out and leaves his baby behind like it means nothing to him. this is what i was afraid of. In a few month nobody from the original team will be left and M$ will have total creative freedom and omg i just dont know if this will end well. M$ has driven the car in the wrong direction for a long time now.

Edit: I remember when they criticized Oculus for selling out to Facebook and now he has done the same as if he would not make enough money already.

ProjectVulcan4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

Sometimes you do get tired of this monster you create though. He worked on Minecraft for years, and even gave that up within his own company as soon as he could.

"I can’t be responsible for something this big"

This line says a lot.

Sounds like a man looking to move away from this beast he created, so why not sell up his stake in Mojang and go do something he really wants to?

He's a zillionaire now, set for life. He may as well do what he wants, rather than stay just to have Microsoft as his overlords.

equal_youth4231d ago

I understand this thought but i think nobody can clear himself off of that. He could bring someone else in to lead his company or works for him around the stuff he dont like. Personally i think he created an even bigger "beast" by feeding Minecraft to M$.

miyamoto4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

I don't think Notch sold out. He was pressured to the point of being forced by M$.

M$ in order to save face against the asswhopping it gets from PlayStation,, needs a surefire hit game that makes tons of money immediately. They can not risk taking chances on new IPs like Sony does with Naughty Dog. They need an instant huge fan base that they can brag about using "their own" product.

This is M$ attitude. They think they can BUY success. They do not have the chops or capacity to create their own success.

I really don't like Microsoft's presence in the video game industry.

Video games were already big during the PS2 era and M$ wanted to steal market share.

Since the 80's video games used to be a fun and unique little hobby where a handful of talented and visionary garage developers make a great game that gamers love and become successful. Just like Minecraft

Now it has become so different, so much politics and money hatting, so corporate, so commercialized with M$ bullying its way through the industry with its billions.

They are destroying the true essence of success in the industry.
They are destroying the true essence of what makes the video gaming industry exciting, growing, and progressing naturally.

Baka-akaB4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

Oculus wasnt even truly done as a product so it's not exactly the same situation .

Here Minecraft has been around for a while , and he obviously wanna do something else , even if it mean not being as successful twice . So of course he sells it and stop being the face of the company , but doesnt mean it would sell it cheap

DLConspiracy4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

Nobody needs to spin this into some weird MS hatred. People get tired of being responsible for a creation all the time. Especially those happy little accidents/coincidences along the way. Some people are not in this to be in the public eye or for fame. I don't blame him in the least. He probably feels freed.

equal_youth4231d ago

i can see that he got carried away by all this and he was never meant to make business decisions and that is because he seems like a nice person who won't lie to his consumers and so on. playing which such high numbers requires some brutal decisions. i watched the minecraft documentary and of course when you see notch entering this world you see how lost he is. i would say it was easy for phil and his guys to talk into him.
but i wouldn't say i have just hate for M$ its more business like this as a hole. i stated this before: Notch should have kept his baby and raise it by himself or bring someone in who he can put his trust into. sry if i offended you but i dont think notch can escape his past.
And another question is what does a person like him gets to do with all this money? If he didn't like the attention before how can he think everything gets better if your a billionaire? thats when people really begin to step on your toes.

DLConspiracy4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

@equal

I wasn't offended. Nor do I understand why people are disagreeing with me... I just think that this action isn't exactly MS doing. If you notice he barely brings them up. Some people genuinely just can't handle the limelight. Its not something you want to be apart of when you feel stuck in it. Look at flappy bird guy. Same thing. We are not all built for success. Sometimes if not most we stumble upon it. He has enough money now to buy an island and not be around anyone.

@warczar

What on earth are you talking about? I don't love corporations. I just read this letter for what it was. Some people are turning it into some corporate thing. The letter is obviously about more than corporations... I don't even know where people are making the connection. If he had a problem with MS why did he ask for more money? You are reading far too much into this because of your emotional attachment to Minecraft perhaps? I see this letter as someone letting go of a cage he feels he built for himself. Nothing more.

warczar4231d ago

How is it weird to hate a corporation? Are you going to tell me you've never been riped off by a shithead corporation? Don't tell me you love all corporations and that its "weird" to bad mouth them. How do you know what another person's experience with Microsoft has been? You don't, and there's not enough room here to list the grievances myself and a lot of other people have with Microsoft.

Testfire4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

True but consider this. If you have a classic car, say a 1969 GTO Judge, and it comes time to sell it. Some rich kid comes along, all the money in the world, spoiled and doesn't appreciate what he has offers you an insane amount of cash. Then comes along another person, not rich, but has saved up for years, appreciates what he's earned and takes care of what he has. He offers you considerably less, but still more than market value. Who would you rather your baby go to?

I see the same rich kid with this acquisition. MS doesn't take care of and nurture their acquisitions. They buy just to buy, cause they have the money to spend. They could have spent the money nurturing the studios they already have and put it towards many, many new IPs. Rare anyone?

DLConspiracy4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

@test

If that's what people want to turn it into. They have full right to think what they want. I personally know what its like to create something because I love something. Not because of money and then be accused of things that never even crossed my mind about it. Perhaps he is not happy with how people are categorizing him for wanting to let go and get back to basics. Back to what he loves most. Some things like creation save people from the hell they deal with on their own. As he mentions "its not about the money, its about my sanity" sometimes people create things and they never even realized the power it had. In other words he made this because he loved it. He feels he created a monster and lost touch with why he was doing it sometime ago.

Its all there in black and white. Not sure why people are demonizing anyone for wanting to get back to what they love and what makes them happy.

Testfire4231d ago

@DLC, I'm not judging Notch specifically, but rather MS. Why? Because to them this acquisition its just another Notch in their belt. Its nothing more than a bullet point to them. I just hate to see great companies swallowed up by the corporate machine, then lose any identity that once made them shine. I'll hope for the best, but I really do expect the worse.

DLConspiracy4231d ago (Edited 4231d ago )

@test

That's fine. My point is this letter is not about that. So there is no need to turn it into that. That's all. I write music for a living and believe me making music isn't about making money. At some point when your passion becomes about numbers and sales you feel drained of what made you happy. Especially if people turn what you love into a cumbersome and very stressful job. It takes you away from the real reason you started something. Which was to make yourself happy by doing something that makes you love life and yourself. Imagine what its like on this scale.

Trust me Notch felt that Minecraft became a business LONG before MS had anything to do with it. I see the letter as this and respect the letter because of it. I just didn't want to cheapen what he was saying by turning this into another "MS ruins lives" daily routine.

Testfire4231d ago

@DLC, fair enough, its easy to get off topic here. OT, I could only imagine the burden Minecraft could have become, especially for someone like Notch who hates the spotlight. I'm the same way, and truth be told I would have removed myself from the situation as well. Best wishes to him.

I find the timing of this announcement interesting considering it's right after Microsoft announced the acquisition. Kinda of an FU to MS. Also, looks like he is tired of all the nasty gamer trolls.

WOW!!! I wish Notch the best of luck. My children are going to be depressed. I guess he's right about being a symbol to many. My advice, buy a nice cabin up on a mountain top somewhere where its nice and quiet. Then again, with all the money that you have made, just buy the damn mountain. Peace!!

I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of money Minecraft makes these days is from DLC, so going f2p would make a lot of sense. But given how cheap the game actually is ($30 for consoles/PC and $7 on mobile) I don't think it would make that much of diference.

VenomUK388d ago (Edited 388d ago )

If 50% of all kids buy just one copy of this game (made up number but not unrealistic as the game has become almost a rites of passage) then Microsoft is doing great by being paid for each copy.

StoneTitan388d ago

it would actually make no sense to go f2p.
If you can charge something for the basegame and people pay for it (obviously they are still doing it) then going f2p would be idiotic.

Vits387d ago

Puting a entry price on anything also reduces it potential player base and therefore its paying costumer for DLC. That mind you likely make the bulk of Minecraft revenue. That is basic business since at least a decade, so I would get in with the times.

so i assume PSVR2 is not going to take its place. That's a shame as I do think it could benefit from the VR2 improved fidelity and controls.

Play No Man Sky for open world experience on PSVR2

Abnor_Mal574d ago

Never was a Minecraft fan, so no more support isn’t a big deal for me.

What I would like for Xbox and Bethesda to do is update Skyrim VR to be playable on the PSVR2. That’s the only game I want out of the Xbox catalog.

OtterX573d ago

I wasn't a Minecraft fan until VR. It heightened the experience for me, but I prefer to use texture packs to improve the look a little bit.

I'm slightly bummed about the drop of PSVR support bc I was starting co-op w my daughter w this. Her on the PSVR Minecraft, and myself on the PC version w my Quest 2. :\
