Microsoft needs Minecraft to boost mobile ambitions

Reuters :

"Enter Minecraft, which is the top paid app both on Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) iOS and Google Inc's (GOOGL.O) Android systems. Microsoft will unveil a $2.5 billion deal to buy its owner on Monday, according to a source briefed on the matter.

“It seems like Microsoft is looking at Mojang and Minecraft as a way to tap into this enormous cultural phenomenon," said Dave Bisceglia, Chief Executive of independent game studio Tap Lab. "If you look at iOS, Minecraft has been a top-grossing game for quite some time, if Microsoft could on Windows phones give players a unique and compelling experience that you can't get on the other platforms, that could be a driver to sell devices to existing Minecraft fans.”

So $2.5B to mainly help windows phone?

MS be crazy. I wonder how they will do it. Exclusive features? Timed exclusive of 6m to 1y on windows phone? Should be interesting to watch.

" if Microsoft could on Windows phones give players a unique and compelling experience **that you can't get on the other platforms**, that could be a driver to sell devices to existing Minecraft fans"

Wat....

They're risking $2.5 billion on the Windows phone? Please tell me it's coming to all of their other platforms eventually too, because if not, that's a ridiculously huge risk to take for a platform that isn't particularly successful: http://upload.wikimedia.org...

I don't know whether to facepalm through the back of my own skull, or applaud MS for their balls of steel. Maybe I'll do both. They either have access to a crystal ball, which gives them unparalleled insight into their long-term decisions...or they're crazy.

Kayant4248d ago (Edited 4248d ago )

It sounds like it will still be multiplat. I mean all sources on this have said so far at least Minecraft will continue the way it is. Minecraft 2 is up in the air if there is one but it would be stupid if they locked it down to Xbox/PC/WP only.

As some people have said on gaf it's probably also because of licensing see rovio and angry birds if not they won't be making back their investment anytime soon.

GarrusVakarian4248d ago (Edited 4248d ago )

And looking at the article, I noticed this:

"Markus Persson, the game's creator and co-founder of Mojang, said last year that Windows phones are so insignificant in terms of market share that they are not worth developing for.

"Because it's tiny," Persson wrote in an email to Reuters last June, when asked why his company only made mobile versions of its games for iOS and Android, but not Windows Phone."

So not even Persson has faith in the Windows phone brand...but I guess he won't care, he'll be $2.5 billion richer and laughing all the way to the bank. But that says a lot about the risk MS is taking here, when the creator of Minecraft, and founding member of Mojang, calls the platform this deal is being made for "tiny" and "insignificant".

As I said above, MS either know something we don't, or are crazy, risk-loving lunatics. Either way, it should be interesting to see how they plan to make their money back...and then some.

He is not wrong if you look at thing WP's global share compared to Android and iOS is peanuts :P. Although I think what he said is a bit old.

Android - 84.7%
iOS - 11.7%
WP - 2.5%
BlackBerry OS - 0.5%
Others - 0.7%

Hope PSVita version is not dead! So, Minecraft still remain multiplatform title on consoles?

BitbyDeath4248d ago

So they are picking Windows Phone over Xbox? Why create a new dev stable and not put this with the others?

OpieWinston4248d ago

No...
They're looking at Minecraft as a whole and the potential of future Mojang games.

Minecraft alone...Toys/Movies/Shirts/Acc essories/Etc...
Minecraft is the new Lego for kids.

Microsoft is also using some of their outside cash for investments. They've got over $84 Billion in cash reserves outside of the States.

This is for Windows/Xbox/Surface/WP.
It's all about the MS brand, not a single purpose.

Sure Xbox may get a bit of special treatment but Mojang will be turned into a more universal studio that is free to make what they like while continuing to push Minecraft.
Like Press Play/Twisted Pixel/Etc..

Not hard to see the overall benefit.

BitbyDeath4248d ago

That could still all be done under Xbox.
This would mean they are just separating the entity from the Xbox division.

gameon19854248d ago

I really do think this is crazy to spend this kind of money on one ip. But one thing Sony fans need to stop doing is acting like this is the Xbox division buying this game and studio. This has nothing to do with Phil or the Xbox division.

OpieWinston4248d ago

Well first of all, it's not on one IP.

It's a studio and IP acquisition. Obviously MS sees more potential in the IP than anything else considering the success. But also the potential for some other projects like their Space Sandbox game they put on hold a year ago.

Also that's not entirely true considering Phil and Notch are close and both brought the deal to the desk of their companies.

Oh boy...can you imagine minecraft 2 with the money ms pour into the developer and make it a XB1, PC, and Windows phone exclusive with cross play? That will be some major coup for MS and some meltdown will be a result. But I think It is safe to say Android and iOS should also get a version because the potential money is too much to not do it but if it is onlu on the XB1 on the consolefront..that will be a major victory for MS as the x360 version of minecraft is still selling like hot cakes.

I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of money Minecraft makes these days is from DLC, so going f2p would make a lot of sense. But given how cheap the game actually is ($30 for consoles/PC and $7 on mobile) I don't think it would make that much of diference.

VenomUK403d ago (Edited 403d ago )

If 50% of all kids buy just one copy of this game (made up number but not unrealistic as the game has become almost a rites of passage) then Microsoft is doing great by being paid for each copy.

StoneTitan403d ago

it would actually make no sense to go f2p.
If you can charge something for the basegame and people pay for it (obviously they are still doing it) then going f2p would be idiotic.

Vits402d ago

Puting a entry price on anything also reduces it potential player base and therefore its paying costumer for DLC. That mind you likely make the bulk of Minecraft revenue. That is basic business since at least a decade, so I would get in with the times.

Funny how they and their parent company have different views on subscription-based delivery.

so i assume PSVR2 is not going to take its place. That's a shame as I do think it could benefit from the VR2 improved fidelity and controls.

OtterX589d ago

Well, they did just announce a native PS5 version the other day. Maybe there's hope, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Play No Man Sky for open world experience on PSVR2

Abnor_Mal589d ago

Never was a Minecraft fan, so no more support isn’t a big deal for me.

What I would like for Xbox and Bethesda to do is update Skyrim VR to be playable on the PSVR2. That’s the only game I want out of the Xbox catalog.

OtterX588d ago

I wasn't a Minecraft fan until VR. It heightened the experience for me, but I prefer to use texture packs to improve the look a little bit.

I'm slightly bummed about the drop of PSVR support bc I was starting co-op w my daughter w this. Her on the PSVR Minecraft, and myself on the PC version w my Quest 2. :\
