Evolution Studios Made The Right Choice Delaying DriveClub

Evolution Studios made a gutsy move delaying DriveClub last year despite the reaction and backlash from racing fans, but with their recent updates and announcements for the socially interactive game, the studios gamble may just pay off in the end.

ginalee5544286d ago

Not really in to the fact that Driveclub is being advertised as a racing game even though its not really about coming actually winning the race.

Racing games are all about skill at the end of the day and though its great to reward drifters with achievements i there should be some special section for people who can actually win races.

janetmarrett114286d ago

I did consider that too, but figured they are trying something new. Not every one is an expert racer, this should give them access to being able to compete socially at least.

amiga-man4286d ago (Edited 4286d ago )

Seeing the vast improvements they have made to the game it was absolutely the right decision,

I applaud them for not releasing something they were not happy with and giving PS4 owners the game they deserve

Well played Evolution well played.

If they actually did release drive club on launch day do you know how much fail that would be?! Graphics were terrible and only at 30fps too and Gameplay wasn't impressive either.. It would have gotten butchered by the media as well as gamers... So yes, they made a damn great choice to delay it cause it has truly come a long way and is looking very good now.

Kayant4286d ago (Edited 4286d ago )

"Not really in to the fact that Driveclub is being advertised as a racing game even though its not really about coming actually winning the race." - WTH are you on about??? You get rewarded for doing both. You don't just get points for doing challenges like having the best drift an x corner. Winning is still going to be important.

EdnaJones974286d ago

Like anything new thaw never been done before people get all antsy and wonder if it will be any good. I actually like the way Evo are marketing this as just beyond winning races. It opens it up to other people interested in the genre.

ginalee5544286d ago

I get the whole idea winning both, but lets face it. actually winning a race should be the ultimate prize in a racing game. I mean imagine real life racing, where every one is put on the same peddle stool just because some one raced the fast track, or some drifted the longest.

Winning should be the penultimate prize is what i am saying.

Kayant4286d ago

@ginalee554

"Winning should be the penultimate prize is what i am saying." - How do you know it isn't? iirc there isn't anything showing that this is not true. For all you know winning is needed to unlock cars. We don't know to the full extend how rewards are done.

Kurisu4286d ago

I'm glad you cleared that up because for a moment there I thought that above comment was true :/

extravalue4286d ago (Edited 4286d ago )

@ginalee554

peddle stool lol

tlougotg4286d ago

yeah idk wtf hes talking about! It still is a racing game, one that is trying to be even more realistic adding social features. May not really be a sim but its definitely a racing game.

As for the delay, yes it was good they delayed it because the game has made a complete 180 from the state it was before and now is close to reveal trailers. However that is kind of a catch 22 because Sony messed up by promising us this game at launch and many were hype about it so they screwed us over and let us down, either way im glad they polished it up.

You must be good at racing games then. Not everyone is, Evo are aware of this and trying to facilitate people who may good at other things.

you're not alone. personally as a sim racing fan, i want to be interested in DC as there aren't any "good" racing games on the ps4, but its just shallow to me and doesn't touch on the areas of the sport that actually make it strategic and competitive. they spent all this effort making sure that light reacts properly on all these surfaces realistically, made streaking rain drops look realistic etc but didn't bother to make the physics of driving as realistic, or the ability to tune your car for certain tracks/setups or even the ability to customize your cars... on top of what you mentioned. it looks really pretty but at the end of the day its just another PGR with slightly different goals and a fresh coat of paint. i'll pass. hopefully project cars will be the first proper racer on the ps4 that will satisfy actual enthusiasts of the sport and not just fanboys who only care about ps4 graphics.

iceman064286d ago

"as a sim racing fan".....then this OBVIOUSLY shouldn't be your game. This isn't supposed to or never was supposed to be a sim. It has been billed, from the beginning, as an arcade racer with "slightly more realistic" handling. It's more like every other racer and less like GT, Forza, and Project Cars. Those are (and will probably be) great games. But, there has to be something to satisfy the middle ground. Those of us that don't necessarily like the total and complete realism of sim racing games.

cbuc11254286d ago

I will be playing in a club of 1...me. Then after my first playthrough i will play in a full club. Problem solved.

EverydayGuy4285d ago

I think it is about winning and scoring the most points. The point system will act like a bonus points. I think each course have different sections that will make you do different things inside those sections. Winning just by being first will not count unless you have the points as a padding for you to safely keep first place.

I think this is kind of genius for team play, since the race is dynamic enough where you need each player with certain strength to be on your team to compete to win.

danniellelewis4286d ago

I am waiting patently to play this, but looking forward to solo modes more than anything else. The multiplayer aspect is a bit worrisome.

brettjones4944286d ago

Whats worrying about it dude? Unless you don't like playing others online. I relish the challenge. Even if I don't win at one thing i think its great to rank on the boards for something else. jet my two cents.

charliewong9804286d ago

Its so funny how my friends were going crazy after hearing Driveclub was delayed along with Watch-Dogs, difference is it looks like the guys at Evolution actually went and did real work on their game while Ubisoft undid most of the great things to dazzle us during their E3 promo.

lisamorgan44286d ago

i hope their gamble pays off. I know it certainly didn't for watch-dogs

henrythomas2844286d ago

and whose to say it didn't? Lats time I read Ubi sold over 4 million copies of watch dogs, sounds like a pretty good pay day to me.

edwardhuff6634286d ago

Now compare that to destiny's 500 million sales in one day.

Not only that, just because Watchdogs sold well doesn't mean part two might.

WeAreLegion4286d ago (Edited 4286d ago )

That's $500 Million, not 500 million copies. That would be insane.

Edit: Yes, they were. I imagine that was physical and digital combined though. We'll get physical numbers next week.

Frankskint4286d ago

@WeAreLegion

Damn Thats still a heck of a lot of units. was pre-orders part of that calculation too?

iceman064286d ago

Not to mention that none of us played the game before it got delayed. Just think...it could have actually been a WORSE game! (not that I think it was as horrible as the rest)

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 4286d ago
uth114286d ago

That's 500 million dollars, not copies.

Anyway, just because Destiny outsold it, doesn't make Watch Dogs a commercial failure by any means.

Rik_Mayall4286d ago (Edited 4286d ago )

When Driveclub was first shown it looked pretty awesome and the concept was cool...

...Then it was delayed and ever since all they have focused on talking about is graphics, graphics, graphics. The ratio of graphics to gameplay quotes and articles are shocking.

Not to mention things are still behind and going to be patched in after release like weather?!?

alvinmiller924286d ago

A free new car each month sounds like a good trade off for making us wait for so long.

Oschino19074286d ago

They stated their biggest concern and reason for delay was the online/social aspects not being where they wanted them to be.

Obviously all the employees can't be working on the online/social part of the game so they were staying busy polishing and tweaking everything else.

Almost every dev team has to deal with restrictions from time constraints or budget. Ask any and most would say they would prefer to have more time, especially when the publisher is one of the bigger ones.

Everyone's Talking About DriveClub Again, PS4's Underappreciated Racer

In this day and age, it’s rare we experience a warm fuzzy feeling when we boot up X (formerly known as Twitter, of course).

But the past few days have been lovely: our feed is full of people talking about DriveClub again.

The discussion started when someone posted a clip of the game and its infamous rain effects. The caption reads: “Still can’t believe this is a 12 year old game.”

This was one I was hoping would have some kind of boost from the PS5. The devs locked that sucker so tight...

I play the PSVR one even though it doesn't look as good, because that one is 60fps.

fr0sty61d ago

To this day, there still hasn't been a game to pull off better rain effects.

Cacabunga61d ago

Evolution Studios.. another waste of talent

fr0sty61d ago

I interviewed them twice back in my gaming journalist days... Once at E3 2006 and again on a podcast about a year later. Really nice folks.

fr0sty61d ago (Edited 61d ago )

The guy we interviewed both times' name was Simon, I can't remember his last name, it was 20 years ago, but he was a really nice guy, and was very passionate about his job. It broke my heart when I saw Sony shuttered Evolution. I do hope they bring some of those folks back, but I remember another studio ended up hiring most of them back in those days, and they've been releasing new games since under that studio... Codemasters, maybe? I forgot which....

But the amount of talent that Sony has shut down over the years, it's disturbing. Psygnosis, Evolution, Zipper... just those three studios produced some of the most innovative games that PlayStation has ever seen... and those games need to be brought back.

Agent7560d ago

Driveclub VR was graphically tragic.

maximusprime_62d ago

If they were to release that game on the PlayStation 5, there would be absolutely no need for a remaster or a remake. The whole appeal of the original game was that it consistently exceeded people's expectations.

fr0sty61d ago

Higher rendering res and textures, higher framerate, maybe toss in some global illumination/ray tracing, but other than that, they could keep every polygon the same and it would still look absolutely incredible as a current gen title.

Reaper22_61d ago

That game has good graphics but bad AI, though.

Agent7560d ago

The AI was what I'd call aggressive, but superb to play.

Jin_Sakai62d ago

Sony should reassemble the team and make Driveclub 2. Driveclub was so ahead of its time it’s crazy.

lodossrage62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

This is what I hate about gamers sometimes

There is a segment of gaming communities that always want an old game to come back. But when the game(s) were in their prime, nobody supported them or not enough people supported them. Driveclub, Killzone, Resistance, etc all fit that profile.

I want Driveclub, Killzone, Resistence, and etc all back too. But I say that as someone that bought into, played, and own those games.

Too many people like to talk but not put up the money to support when it's needed. I even lump two of my own personal friends into that. I remember how one of them constantly said "I always wanted to play the Resistance games", yet never made an effort to buy any of them. No way that's an isolated event.

IanTH61d ago (Edited 61d ago )

There are certainly games that fit that description, but I'm not sure these are a good fit:

- Driveclub infamously launched in a truly terrible state. It had a central focus on online & social features, and those were broken for about 6+ months before people could reliably play it as intended. It was so bad that the PS Plus Edition was delayed, along with its companion app. It also released less than a year after the PS4 launch, so it had to deal with a smaller total of launch PS4 owners to sell to, and Driveclub's rough launch certainly did it no favors.
- Resistance got 3 main console entries, and one handheld title for the PSP and PS Vita. Killzone got 5 main console entries across 3 generations, and one handheld title for PSP and PS Vita. This was also the era of millions of shooters, especially of the First Person variety, & genre fatigue was getting heavier by the year. So I feel these did pretty good at 5 and 7 titles respectively, pointing to enough people showing up for at least a while.

I'm not saying people don't exist who fit that criteria for these games, but I also don't think they were the primary issue. I think after a solid break from the IPs, as well as a lessening of shooter oversaturation, these titles could find healthy audiences if they came out with new entries at this point.

Agent7560d ago

Killzone on the PS4 had the graphics, but the gameplay was tragic, I only rated Killzone 3, although the first game on the PS2 was decent. The Getaway was another game Sony canned, the sequel was so bad. Plenty of games need a sequel, the likes of Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Project Gotham, Wave Race and F-Zero have been retired. The racing genre these days, I'm sick of Turismo and Forza due to the same tracks and any other clones.

robtion61d ago

I think the original Motorstorm was the game that convinced me to buy a ps3. Way ahead of its time.

Storm2361d ago

I played the sh*t out of MotorStorm 1 and 2. Incredible games.

darthv7261d ago

Pacific Rift was the best of the bunch for me.

badz14960d ago

Pacific Rift for me is still the best off-road racer ever made

Agent7560d ago

Surprised Sony didn't release a collectio, but all they seem to do these days is release God of War and Uncharted collections. It kills me that I no longer have a PS3, so a collection would be awesome.

Classic PS4 Racer DriveClub Is Now a Decade Old

PushSquare:

DriveClub, the legendary PS4 racer from shuttered Runcorn studio Evolution, has such an interesting story.

Originally announced alongside the PS4, the game had been intended as a launch title – we even played it in a big London church Sony had rented to showcase the new system prior to its release.

Evolution was done dirty... DC is still the most stunning visual game of its generation. They certainly deserved better in the end.

VenomUK604d ago (Edited 604d ago )

DriveClub was pretty and I loved the experience of driving in the rain, it was immersive. I had some good races with people from an old forum, but at times I found it to be a bit boring. MotorStorm was such a fun game to play and I loved the controls - it would make sense to remaster that.

DarXyde604d ago

I'd give the visual showcase award of the last generation to The Order: 1886. That game was immaculate.

Uncharted 4 was also absolutely insane, and perhaps manages to use the PS4's power in extremely clever ways.

jznrpg604d ago

It didn’t get good reviews unfortunately

obidanshinobi604d ago

Cause the game was mediocre at best, and surpassed in pretty much every area by Forza Horizon 2.

IRetrouk604d ago

Apart from visuals, driving model, weather effects, only thing forza had was an open world...

Inverno604d ago (Edited 604d ago )

It's multiplayer component was the only thing struggling at launch but the game was still perfectly playable offline. Done dirty is an understatement because how many games after came out with broken online components that got a pass? Now games with an SP and MP get separate reviews for SP and MP smh! SONY shut them down as if Evo had been bleeding money instead of putting out great games. Their fate was undeserved and they were the targets of a media smear campaign due to that one trailer.

Knushwood Butt604d ago

Loved it.
Now here's a game that would benefit from a remaster.
4K, 60 FPS
I'd buy it.

ravens52604d ago

Might have to fire it up. Got it day 1, it was great to me.

outsider1624604d ago

See? Another reason why physical is important. Going all digital will have you miss out games like this.

Gabrielmpf604d ago

I loved tackling the leaderboards. It's a shame they couldn't even keep them.

Yi-Long604d ago

Brilliant game, I really miss it, and it deserved so much better than what Sony did to it.
Most important reason I liked it; It was FUN. That’s it. The actual gameplay, throwing a car around corners, the challenging AI opponents, the entertaining tracks which were peak-design, etc etc, it was above all just FUN to play.

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

darthv72875d ago

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut85875d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio875d ago (Edited 875d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack875d ago (Edited 875d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander1972875d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

shinoff2183874d ago (Edited 874d ago )

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

dumahim875d ago

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Notellin61d ago

If Microsoft boosted several hundred 360/XB1 to 60 FPS without patching the games I'm sure the modder and therefore also Sony could do the same.

But PlayStation gamers aren't really worthy of receiving those kind of free updates according to Sony and the community. You guys enjoy paying for really easy things like a FPS boost and kneeling down to lick the boots.

Inverno875d ago

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

shinoff2183874d ago

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 61d ago
Chocoburger875d ago

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

Jin_Sakai875d ago

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

EazyC875d ago

RDR 2 not getting a 60FPS patch for PS5 was a crime.
