Hardly a failure. Nothing that sells 30 million is a failure. 32X, Jaguar, 3DO are failures. Hell, that means every console except PS1 PS2 and Wii have been failures.

They competed against Nintendo in a market that company has owned for nearly 20 years.

Meh my PSP does what I want it to do. That is, everything in terms of media related to the playstation. On the bonus it can play some games. That, however, is not what I got it for.

The PSP was one of the hardest and hottest selling handheld gaming devices for the 07 holiday list and still is. I don't get why people keep saying its a failure. What next? How Sony lost the console gaming war?

When you get outsold badly by your competitor, your a failure. The PSP is in R.I.P. mode. Sony failed in the handheld market, and now they are failing in the console market.

The PSP and PS3 have been huge failures for Sony, as both are stuck in last place. Maybe Sony should just stick with making TV's and failed formats.

The PSP is a relative failure due to the insane success of the DS; the PSP as a first gen device entering into a market that has been dominated by Nintendo with no competition for over 15 years (since GameGear went bump) has in reality been very successful.

In the future, i see the next gen of the PSP to be similar in hardware power to the existing one but in a more ergonomic form and to have much more of its software library tied to the PS3 and the remote play features; UMD is dead though for all intents and purposes and will be no more in 3 or so years.

Regardless of what these people think, I'm so thankful that Sony has the PSP for gamers like me. I want to play God of War, Crisis Core, Twisted Metal, and WipeOut. Not Nintendogs, Cooking Mama, Mario, or Brain Age.

They are lacking in games. Come on, God of war and final fantasy. 2 games for nearly half the year? And what's down the pipeline? Kingdom hearts..? Then what? I love my psp but Sony sure don't. Release some darn games already

The PSP is doing just fine! and just getting better...I dont see how anyone could call it a failure.

But having two of them, I was under the impression that the PSP was a success. It's still selling great and has sold over 30 million. Some consoles never hit 30 million in their lifetime so I would say that the PSP if far from a failure.

It is used for a lot of other things other then gaming and as we know software is what keeps the hardware alive.

Gamers see it as a little gadget that can do many little things but it's suppose to be gaming first and I'm sorry the exclusive games for the PSP is lacking.

A lot of rehashes, remakes, spin-offs. It becomes an extension of the PS2 while the Wii is more than that with it's stylist capabilities.

Just make games people want for it and it will be fine. It has the Edge in hardware but that's about it. Looking at the NDS and it's mother, the Wii and why it has been successful, it's not all about hardware specs.

I'm looking at the release schedule for the year and not seeing much.

For me personally, just having Metal Gear, GTA:LCS and VCS, Twisted Metal, Patapon, Lumines and GoW made it worth owning.

Sadly, the only thing I'm looking forward to this year is Samurai Shodown Anthology. If it doesn't get cancelled.

i guess we all have piracy to blame.it all dark alexs fault psp failed. every firmware gets cracked within 24 hours.

I (the hardcore gamer) have a PSP, my 2 kids and wife each have a DS (the non hardcore gamers). That's the difference, the DS appeals more to casuals and kids and the PSP appeals more to the hardcore crowd. That's 3-1 which is why the DS has more sales.

Lets be honest with eachother here and say the handheld is great, however most of the games are not. This handheld entered the market with a price of $250 anyone in there right mind would not pay that for a handheld system. The games sucked and didn't get good till a few years later much like I see the PS3 doing. If you notice the UMD movies are not selling because they wanted to charge the consumers 15 to 25 dollars a movie that can only be watched on this handheld. PS3 has Blu-Ray another soon to be failure just watch you will see. Sony has too many things going on within its company just way too many devices on the market and poor advertising/pricing. With the cost of everything on the market today and gas prices I only see things getting worse for this company if they don't start fixing the matters.

They were busy promoting PS3 in 2006, so they let the PSP hang in there on auto-pilot, not making many games for it and not negotiating with 3rd parties to do the same, so the games that came out were not stellar.

That, the fact that it has one analogue nub and only two triggers (how could sony do such a stupid mistake), and that it used to cost twice of a DS on software and hardware, well, they did nothing. I mean they simply let Nintendo take the portable market pie, and while now they are reverting the trends, it is too late. The DS released some innovative non-games and it succeeded in the phase of Sony not giving a sh1t about the PSP.

Well, at least fanboys and Sony alike can think that at least Sony did not make much effort, instead of tons of futile attempts like Microsoft with Xbox 360 on every front especially in Japan, where it is failing despite 3 year warranty, cheapest console, most "new" JRPGs, a year headstart, tons of marketing budget, porn games, and so on.

Its all in the timing and Nintendo had it right in 2004. Sony, at the time, made their handheld with the presumption that their opponent would be either the GBA or its successor, however Nintendo had other plans. It decided to surprise everybody at the next E3(as well as Sony) not to mention a better price point and date set.

To put it simply, Sony didn't see this coming. You can't blame them into assumbing the Game boy would reign again after about 20 years. Of course, Nintendo knew better. They knew it wouldn't stand a chance, which is why the Nintendo DS is the true successor.

If you'd have asked any analyst if any could come into a market owned by Nintendo and sell 30 million + machines, nobody would have believed it were possible.

Where Sony did fail, was the area of security. Piracy is more rampant on the PSP than any other machine. WHY? Cause its easy and doesn't require extra hardware.
Developers aren't stupid - they see the sales of the games they are making compared to the install base and know why it is. Anyone can search the web and find out just how much pirating of these titles goes on. This is one area where piracy is definitely at a level that harms the life of the machine.

You can guarantee that when the next machine arrives, it will be very secure. You can tell the lesson was learnt from the situation with the PS3 - the only current gen console which you can't pirate games on.

well even tough i agree that selling all those millions in their 1st attempt is not bad at all, the point is that its competitor(DS) has sold way more than the PSP, so technically, its losing, and we know its gonna stay that way because the DS is a damm money printer,lol

also, why is it that people say now with the psp that its not a failure because it was the 1st attempt, but they dont do it with the xbox? it also sold like 30mill right? and we can also be sure that the minute the PS3 outsells the 360 even if it is by 1 console, almost all of you are gonna say that the 360 lost...

But it's hard to find good titles simply because there's so many crap ones available; it's the same problem as the Wii. But the pirating issue definitely needs to be fixed with PSP 2, which will probably be solved by using mini Blu-ray discs and a Cell processor.

Everyone and their grandmother has DS, now they want a PSP.

Ngage, Wonder Swan, Neo Geo Pocket, R-Zone, Game.com, Sega Nomad, Atari Lynx, Turbo Express. These were failed handheld consoles. Sony PSP was a success by a wide margin in comparison to these.

.. they always have. Sony had a hard time from the start... they have, however done the best job so far of supplying Nintendo with decent competition.

I do agree that the DS is doing better than the PSP, and I do think that Nintendo is doing better than Sony handheldwise, but I wouldn't say that the PSP is a failure...

Experience. Nintendo has been in the Handheld gaming biz for almost 30 years. Sony can't expect to just waltz right in and take over half of the Gameboy fanbase that Nintendo has gathered over the years, can they? And even though PSP has GTA, Gran Turismo (not yet) and God of War, they'll still need more time to build a fanbase like Nintendo has.

But the PSP is by no means a failure :)

IMO Monster Hunter Freedom 2 > All DS games
