Destiny PS4 vs Xbox One Video Comparison: PS4 Has Vibrant Colors And Sharper Image Quality

"A few weeks ago we had compared the beta versions of Destiny on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. We concluded that the PS4 version has better texture filtering but since it was only the beta version there was no way to declare which version looks better."

xHeavYx4147d ago

We all know the PS4 version is the most optimized one

DeadRabbits4147d ago

If u like playing your games with shades on then the xbone version is a must buy!

pinkcrocodile754147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

@xHeavYx - You're right it probably is, though not for ALL multi platform games.

Having played Tomb Raider on my Xbox One and then borrowing my mates TR from my new PS4 I really couldn't tell the difference. Admittedly it's an older game though.

I suppose if you put them side by side you'll see little differences but it's a bit like switching from DVD to Blu Ray you notice it at first for a few minutes but then you're just playing a game and you don't notice.

Mind you only die hard fans and lunatics play these games side my side

StrangerX4147d ago

If you really look at the video it shows like there are more effects like debris moving and going in the Xbox One version "and both are synchronized perfectly" so it looks like it has more going on screen than the PS4 version that because its has less stuff flying around it makes it look prettier but they look pretty much the same nonetheless.

xHeavYx4147d ago

@PinkCrocodile
You must need glasses, the Xbox version can't even go past 30 FPS on the Xbox One

bleedsoe9mm4147d ago

look pretty much the same , at times i forgot the line was there

Gazondaily4147d ago

PS4 version for me but yeah, kinda weird how a Bungie game runs better on Sony's console as opposed to MS'.

Well I find it weird. Its like Naughty Dog making games that run better on an Xbox console. That would be weird.

Still, the differences aren't stark and chances are, you will hardly notice at all. Bungie have done a good job on all consoles technically, even older gen consoles.

u got owned4147d ago

So... I see now its ok to believe Gamingbolt. The double standard is strong in here.

Looks the same to me. PS4 its a bit brighter.

sAVAge_bEaST4147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

Draw Distance on the Ps4 Ver. -seems slightly better, also a little bit sharper image quality.

Webbyy@

The PS4 version of Destiny will most likely be the superior version . Just like 99% of PS4 vs X1 multi platform games. Why because PS4 is more powerful hardware. The only way that any game is not superior on the PS4. Is because of

A. The game is not that graphically demanding and both PS4 and x1 have hardware head room to run the game at it full resolution and frame rates.

B. The developer gimping the PS4 version for the sake of parity. The PS4 has 50 % more GPU cores. PS4 vs X1 both GPU benchmarked by digitalfoundry PS4 GPU has a average of 30% performance advantage.

Ask in pc enthusiast if to GPU's in the same series . One GPU in the same series has 50% more GPU cores which is more powerful. The pc enthusiast would just laugh in your face.

I don't know why x1 fans read these PS4 vs X1 multi platform games comparisons. The PS4 is going to be better than X1. Just enjoy inferior version of the multi platform game and x1 exclusives games/early access to DLC .

P.S I would take a video game comparison with a grain of salt from gamebolt . We will have to just wait for the official PS4 vs X1 comparison news from digitalfoundry.

Kribwalker@

"Typical PSN4G hypocrisy"

It's not hypocrisy to expect more powerful hardware PS4 to preform better than weaker hardware x1.

I think that even x1 fans expect the PS4 version to be better than X1 version. Comment like the preformance gap is closing or PS4 only performs slightly better . Is a indication that x1 are admitting that the PS4 multi platform games are superior to multi platform games on x1.
( It call common sense)

PONTIAC08G8GT4147d ago

@Evilsnuggle

There's a reason why you only have one bubble. You can be a PS Fanboy without coming across as one.

"Just enjoy inferior version of the multi platform game and x1 exclusives games/early access to DLC."

That basically says it all. Basically saying the X1 is only good for exclusives or early DLC. I don't like the Playstation, but I know that multi platform games should look better on the PS4 because it's more powerful. X1 isn't "inferior" and is still powerful, just not like the PS4. That being said, the graphical difference between these 2 platforms isn't earth shattering. I saw a larger difference in BF4 than I do for Destiny.

pixelsword4147d ago

@webbyy:

If you put it on 1080p, you'd see the difference, because I had the same conclusions until I changed the video settings.

XBLSkull4147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

Yeah the PS4 version needs some work on the brightness settings but that can be tweaked on a TV. Other than that the games look exactly the same except there appears to be more dust and particles flying in the X1 version.

At 1:00 you don't even know you are being shown two versions of the game.

Boody-Bandit4147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

@Pontiac

"I saw a larger difference in BF4 than I do for Destiny."

Of course you saw more of a difference with BF4 over Destiny. BF4 is a more intensive and demanding game. BF4 on the PC is a benchmark title. Along with Crysis 3. BF4 has photo realistic type graphics where as Destiny has a cartoon like appearance to it. Especially the color palette.

That is exactly where the PS4 will set itself apart from the X1. With games that are more demanding. I personally never thought Destiny was that great looking game. It's not a bad looking game at all but it's not exactly a stunner either. It being cross platform probably doesn't help. Although I do think it's a really good game and so far I'm having a great time playing it. Getting back on in a couple hours.

darthv724147d ago

It looks like the same game just running on different tv's. Like what you would see at best buy or target when they have all their sets tuned to the same feed.

its done to give you the visual impression of which one has the color or brightness/contrast you may like. but the source material is the same, ie...the game looks good overall and will appear differently depending on the set you use.

NukaCola4147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

Xbox version doesn't look washed out but it's odd it has a film of darkness. 360 was big for crushed blacks which looks really good sometimes but this looks too dimmed. PS4 version looks vibrant. I assume that a simple brightness adjustment for both would tweak them to perfection.

gootimes4147d ago

Somebody call digital foundry!

fr0sty4147d ago

1. The video is obviously poorly upscaled from a lower resolution, or poorly downscaled to fit both frames in, one or the other. all edges are jaggy and low res.

2. This is a cross gen game whose next gen versions barely differ from the last gen. This isn't much to speak of, especially since both are so similar.

DarkZane4147d ago

@PONTIAC08G8GT

"That basically says it all. Basically saying the X1 is only good for exclusives or early DLC."

Even for that, it's not good.

Unspoken4146d ago

If you are going to buy a console for Destiny, look at the rest of the games line up for each and make your decision based off that. Most cross platform games look very similar, as opposed to a game running on something much more expensive.

The graphical comparisons between the two are like comparing two turbo sub compacts, one at 230 HP (PS4) and one at 200 HP (XB1). If racing is limited to a straight line, typically the higher HP will win. When looking at real world driving or on a course, you take much more into consideration as you look at the rest of the parts/components used in the system. The graphical differences become less apparent when you have a high end gaming PC (Nissan GTR or Toyato Supra).

Both systems are great but I was wowed more by the technology and software used in the Xbox One after testing each one at home.

UltraNova4146d ago

I'll wait for Digital Foundry's take on this, thanks.

lfc_4eva4146d ago

Exactly.

They are exactly the same except whoever has captured these cannot set their tv to similar settings.

Xbox One verison looks better. Better lighting and color. The Ps4 verison looks to washed out.

spacedelete4147d ago

no the PS4 version looks better just as every multiplatform game. the thing with Xbox One games is that the hardware is increasing the brightness so people THINK it looks better when in fact PS4 has the better graphics and detail.

its very sneaky method MS is using and fools like you believe them.

Foehammer4147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

They look essentially the same...

All tv's have adjustments for

colour saturation
Brightness
contrast
gamma
etc

make it look what ever way you like.

How can you tell anyway, when PSN is down already?

Death4147d ago

It's awesome when someone has to explain you "think it looks better" because you were tricked. Essentially, if you think it looks better, you are wrong?

If you think one or the other looks better, adjust the settings on your tv.

StrangerX4147d ago

well there is more stuff like debris and wind showing on the Xbox one version and both are synchronized perfectly so no one can say that its because there is different timing in the video.

TheWatercooler4147d ago

Ohhh Damn. Xbox fanboys have been championing destiny as the great proof of parity. We all knew the PS4 version would be superior. Wait until digital foundry analysis comes out. Going to be alot of salt coming from the Xbone camp

CramShaft4147d ago

Question...if we need digital foundry to analyze games with dedicated software to pick up subtle differences that people don't actually notice, how much more superior can one version really be?

choujij4147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

@CramShaft

We don't need DF to see the difference. Anyone with decent vision can see a difference shown in the video above. It's just much harder to deny the technical reports created from their in-depth analysis, that go into great detail on the subject.

CramShaft4147d ago

@choujij

I didn't watch the video above, gamingbolt is a junk site and I choose not to give them clicks.

What I'm driving at is if the only way we can tell one version is better than the other is if digital foundry tells us so, the superior version is really not all that superior. Don't get me wrong, I know there are plenty of games on PS4 that out perform the Xbox counterpart, but those games have noticeable differences that don't need said analysis done to confirm better performance.

I always just find it funny when someone says "wait till digital foundry tells us which games performs better" so they can gloat, but had no idea if it actually was or not.

When I see these so called comparisons, it's never noted of the panels being identical, and fully calibrated (which is very, very important). I will be over my friends house to check both versions out side by side. He has 2 panasonic zt65 plasmas side by side in his game room, and fully caibrated by an ISF tech for each system. I will give my feedback as well. What I do find interesting with gamingbolt comparison is the washed out effect that they are showing for the xb1 version (notice the grey bars as example). It's been known that xb1 decoder crushes blacks at times so this shouldn't show a rise in contrast like that. I will find out though. Hopefully gaming bolt did their comparison on equal displays with proper calibration....

FanboyKilla4147d ago

Lol you try too hard. I have a strange feeling this is fake.

4147d ago
KnightRobby4147d ago

It all depends on TV settings, capture device used, gamma adjustment, component or HDMI, etc. There are going to be color differences for sure, but I have played both X1 and PS4 and they both look equal.

Alsybub4146d ago (Edited 4146d ago )

Time and again we see comparisons where the issues raised are based around colour and brightness which are, almost certainly, down to capture method or the individual settings on the console running the game.

I've actually bought this game on both systems. I'm looking forward to comparing them when I get home tonight. I'm going to make sure that both my PS4 and XB1 are calibrated for gamma, brightness, contrast and colour intensity before doing that. There is no doubt that different devices output different levels of these things and your display needs to be calibrated for each device. It shouldn't be that way but it simply is.

Since most capture methods don't have the ability of changing these settings it would probably be best to play, and record, a few simple test patterns before playing a game so that, once these sites get to the point of editing the videos they can compensate for any inconsistency between devices. That's the only true way to ensure that this is fair. If they still look different then I would hold my hands up and say that I was wrong. But, hey, if they did that there probably wouldn't be anything to start heated debates on in comment sections all over the internet.

Well PS4 is supposed to look the best due to better GPU, but none of the versions look bad. Either way I'm sure Eurogamer will find every flaw...

Death4147d ago

I thought the PS4 version was supposed to look best due to the inferior CPU? Damn, it's so hard to tell which it is when both use a custom AMD APU.

MRMagoo1234147d ago

@death

Tests on both cpus have shown that the ps4 is the better performing.

Death4147d ago

The tests by gamingbolt are BS and don't even use the APU, they are theoretical tests using seperate componants.

Both consoles use the exact same CPU as part of the APU SoC. The difference being the Xbox One was 10% faster running at 1.75GHz vs the PS4's 1.6GHz. The main reason for this being Kinect was using 10% of the resources available. Essentially, the 10% bump compensated, but with the latest update Kinect no longer takes up that 10% and it's free to be used as devs see fit. Now you have a 10% faster CPU on the Xbox One.

Now comes the GDDR5 vs DDR3 comparison where people think letters and numbers equate superiority. GDDR5 is graphics ram, not CPU ram. CPU's are very linear in the way they process information which is why they use DDR and not GDDR. The PS4 is stronger on the GPU side due to it's 7800 based GPU and GDDR5, but the same thing that gives it an advantage also gives it a disadvantage. The CPU needs to offload some of it's calculations to the GPU in order to perform the same as the Xbox One on the CPU side.

Both companies had the same problem. Sharing memory for the CPU/GPU combo. A single pool of memory is both a benefit, but also a crutch. Sony went with a simple GDDR5 solution, Microsoft stuck with DDR3 and eSram to boost performance. Neither is ideal, but both work. It's not as simple as people want to believe. These APU's are made to cut costs, not increase performance.

Kayant4146d ago

@Death

"The tests by gamingbolt are BS" - Well they were not done by them and they are not BS. They were done by Allegorithmic. Expect you want to explain why more often than not PS4 always has the better framerate. And Matt(Multi-Plat dev) on neogaf says devs get more out of PS4's CPU and what Metro devs said in their interview about the differences between the API's.

"Essentially, the 10% bump compensated, but with the latest update Kinect no longer takes up that 10% and it's free to be used as devs see fit. Now you have a 10% faster CPU on the Xbox One. " - Well that's BS it's not actomatically 10% faster CPU then before and it's not a clear 10% performance window as pointed out by Metro devs.

" Well, the issue is slightly more complicated - it is not like 'here, take that ten per cent of performance we've stolen before', actually it is variable, like sometimes you can use 1.5 per cent more, and sometimes seven per cent and so on. We could possibly have aimed for a higher res, but we went for a 100 per cent stable, vsync-locked frame-rate this time That is not to say we could not have done more with more time, and per my earlier answer, the XDK and system software continues to improve every month."

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

Well so far PS4's solution is better and the GDDR ram doesn't seem to be hurting it in terms of latency. No dev as said anything relating to that.

OT - As usual Gamingbolt doesn't know anything. Highly bet their settings are wrong for XB1 version.

I am curious what makes the PS4 have a sharper image quality if they are both 1080p/30fps.

Is the PS4 employing some extra Anti-Aliasing or Ambient Occlusion that the Xbox One isn't?

The vibrant colours could be solved by tweaking the brightness settings..

Overall, the game looks great on both consoles.

Magicite4147d ago

You are delusional if You think resolution and FPS is only things that matter.

Volkama4147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

That's not what he said. He said he was curious about the differences, and raised 2 potential effects that could contribute.

Gamingbolt "play it by eye", which isn't necessarily wrong (at the end of the day that's precisely how we all experience graphics), but if you want any real insight into the technical differences then Digital Foundry is the one to read.

ARESWARLORD4147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

are you running a high end gaming rig there dmitrijs. If not you need to stop acting like a elite bro. Both game are lucky if they are running fxaa. and both are 30fps. 30 is nothing to brag about. This game will be about the same on ps4 or xbone so dont try to act like it wont. stop acting like a snob. And yes dmitrijs, FPS matter huge you just dont know it son. we would have been better off running 60fps at 900p for a shooter.

Spotie4147d ago

If the PS4 is more powerful, shouldn't it be running some more graphical effects?

What's got you confused? Hasn't this been the case for damn beast every multiplat so far?

kneon4147d ago

It may be that the ps4 version is using higher resolution textures.

Neonridr4147d ago

possible but doubtful. Since both consoles are reportedly running this game at 1080p/30fps natively, then there would be no sense created separate textures for one console over the other.

kneon4147d ago

Texture resolution and output resolution are independent. Textures are applied at varying resolutions depending on how big they will appear on screen. There is no point applying a 1024x1024 texture to an object that is only 10 pixels across on screen.

So it may be that because of the limited amount of high speed memory it has available the xb1 uses a lower maximum resolution for some textures.

I expect the character models and important objects in the environment are likely the same. But it may be that secondary objects are lower resolution. It should be easy to tell, just start getting up close to various objects and see if they start to pixelate. If both platforms start to pixelate at the same distance from the object then they are using the same max resolution for that texture.

bunfighterii4147d ago

Maybe PS4 is native 1080p while Xbone is upscaled 900p or something?

rextraordinaire4147d ago

Framerate and Resolution is not all that matters in visuals.

There's color profiles, pixel smoothing, black/white balance etc.

Volkama4147d ago

There are many things that could be different between the versions, but no real reason for colour profiles or black/white balance to differ.

Pixel smoothing I guess you mean anti-alaising? That would be one of the prime candidates for any discrepency.

Alsybub4146d ago

@Volkama

If anything, if the PS4 version looks sharper it could suggest less anti aliasing. That's extremely unlikely though.

Flamingweazel4147d ago

LOL at thinking resolution and frames are all that matters in iq? What about textures? Shadow quality, Ao, Aliasing and on and on.....lol seriously.

Death4147d ago

Is that where the bar has been moved? The amount of excuses when an Xbox One game matches a PS4 game are growing by the day. When you struggle to find the differance that should tell you something.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but both consoles are more similar than people want to believe. The biggest differance is the GDDR5/DDR3 used and how they are accessed by the APU.

GarrusVakarian4147d ago

@Death

"Is that where the bar has been moved? "

What has moved? Res and framerate have never been the only factors of parity. Some people know that, some people don't. Just because someone does know it, and chooses to comment about it, that doesn't mean their "moving" anything.

He's 100% right. Res and framerate aren't the only things to take into consideration when looking at IQ. It's not his fault that people are too dumb and/or ignorant to research that for themselves.

gootimes4147d ago

@Death

Pretty large difference in GPU strength as well in PS4's favor.

souga_houjou_jin4147d ago

Ps4 looks a little better as expected

Death4147d ago

PS4 looks a little better as expected. Xbox One fans everywhere can't see the differance. It all comes down to what you want to see. The PS4 fans with their need to be superior see things differently. Personally, I like the colors on the Xbox One version, but I also adjust the color on my tv so colors pop less. It's called personal preferance.

MonsterChef4147d ago

So death is that all your going to do this generation is defend Microsoft? Id call their pr firm and request a paycheck, so you personally preferred the lower quality one? You don't prefer it you just have to endure it. Let's go back to when red dead redemption came out, the 360 version was sharper and more vibrant I was pissed I only had a ps3 I didn't prefer it over the 360 one but it wasn't a big deal just like this isn't really, I got to enjoy the game just like I'm enjoying destiny now. I hate how much your trying to go for the sympathy card, it's getting rather sad you make Sony fans to be full of themselves and yes they are some that are that way but you fail to see how bad things were when the first Xbox was released maybe if you where around you'd get a different perspective. Graphics don't matter was a pretty used cry for the ps2 when it had to go against the Xbox now the one fan base is using that same cry which in truth has some legitimate to it but I doubt you'll have the insane amount of Japanese indie games that the ps2 enjoyed for graphics to really not matter

gootimes4147d ago (Edited 4147d ago )

Yeah Xbox fans didn't use grass blades as and example of a certain multi plat game being "superior" on 360 last gen...

The PS4 version likely has superior technical features like we found out with Diablo 3 also, is that enough to make someone care or want that version? It is up to them.

I personally think Digital Foundry is the only source to trust on the matter though, if people wanted to see any technical differences.

Neonridr4147d ago

pretty sure they look almost identical. And you, sitting 15 feet away from your TV wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyways.

More in the 1.000 million now.

Let's not forget he also famously passed on Spider-man, Genshin Impact and GTA3.

However it's almost kind of cute how he can keep that sh1t-eating grin and say he's a 'no regrets' kind of guy, especially when you think how much just these 5 titles could have swung the world in Xbox's favour instead of Sonys.

How he's kept his job I don't know, he must sure be keeping Papa Nadella's shaft warm somehow.

"But, but Gamepass, he introduced that!!!"

Yes he did, and now look at Xbox, all it's exclusives are coming to Playstation now rendering the platform obsolete.

Honestly, with that kind of track record, you can't convince me Spencer hasn't eaten it from the back in the name of self preservation. Probably unwashed...and at least twice.

That aside, my interpretation of everything here is Xbox has been mismanaged a bit too much and Nadella came down from his throne. The way it is now, I don't believe for a minute the multiplatform move was Spencer's idea. I don't even think the acquisitions was Spencer's work. At this point, I reckon he's got as much power in his role as Hunter Biden at a Ukrainian energy company.

You can never tell how things will turn out if he had said yes to those games. Xbox already has access to some great IPs, however, they hardly do anything with them or fail to deliver. It's also possible their presentation wasn't good at the time, and they made sure the next presentation was better.

I believe that part of being successful is releasing things in the right place at the right time.

Many major corporations have a story similar to passing on successful business ideas. Let us look at Sony Pictures for example. Back when Marvel went bankrupt, they had the opportunity to buy the entire Marvel for only $25 Million but turned them down. An unnamed big shot at Sony reportedly claimed that “nobody gives a shit about any of the other Marvel characters,”. They ended up taking Spiderman for $10 Million instead.

Fast forward to today, we can see what the Marvel brand has done for Disney. Is it possible the same success would have been possible had Sony acquired those IPs. We can't say that for sure and it is possible most of those IPs that are successful today may not have been used.
