How Will the Seventh Generation be Remembered?

Last November we finally said goodbye to the PlayStation 3, Wii, and the Xbox 360 as we welcomed in the eighth generation of video game consoles. We had these systems as our primary consoles/entertainment systems for almost eight years, making it the second longest console generation of all time. How will it be remembered?

On a personal note, it was a sad memory for the Wii-U and PS3, but the xbox 360 was a joy because the gaming industry made it available for both PS3 and XBOX 360, so I was able to play most games that I wanted to play.

I think so many people emphaize that the ps3 wasnt as good as the xbox306 that people actually beleive that. the only thing that ps3 didnt do was cross game chat. if anything MS will be remembered for cross game chat and gears but nothing really else
oh yeah RROD

Like I said in the message, it was a personal account. I was playing XBOX 360 a majority of the time during this system age. Now, I have a PS4 instead of the XBox One because some great games are landing on this system.

Same thing is said now people emphasize that PS4 is better then Xbox One and they try to believe that. Ultimately both coexisted back then and will with new generation. Better is an opinion on preference.

When I read this my brain fried!

Xbox 360 - 1876 games
Wii - 1770 Games
PS3 - 1263 games

there are quite a couple of things that are going to be remembered for a long time from last gen.

1. RRoD
2. $600 PS3
3. Wii and casuals
3. Bluray vs HD DVD
4. XBL VS PSN
5. CoD and how FPS took over the market
6. DLC
7. The closures of many studios

It will be remembered as the darkest moment of how the PlayStation was tested to its limits with a heavy assault from Microsoft and Nintendo but PlayStation got up, rose from the ashes turned around and showed the two who is boss.

CerealKiller4274d ago

I think it will be remembered as the strongest generation of consoles with the most innovation and experimentation.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle20d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Why the Wii is Such a Nostalgic System in 2026

The Wii is now a retro console. Let’s get nostalgic about an often maligned system.

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree26d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy28d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

DivineHand12527d ago (Edited 27d ago )

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
