PS4′s Powerful Async Compute Tech Allows The Tomorrow Children’s Developer to Save 5 ms Per Frame

Today Q-Games Engine Technology Director James McLaren held a presentation at CEDEC in Japan, showcasing the innovative tech behind the upcoming PS4 exclusive The Tomorrow Children.

Among many interesting elements McLaren showcased how the PS4′s Async Compute technology allows the studio to save over five milliseconds in an effects-heavy frame.

Very interesting tech right here. Using GPU to bypass the limitations of the CPU.

MRMagoo1234273d ago

One of the reasons the ps4 power gap over the competition will only increase as compute is used more.

Eonjay4273d ago (Edited 4273d ago )

This game looks really good. While the PS4 has a clear advantage because of the sheer amount of additional shaders and queues, this is something thst will and already has benefited the Xbox as well: see Ryse.

In the end it looks like Nvidia was right all along. Compute is the future.

Mark Cerny is a straight genius. He called it already. The PS4 has 8 compute queues, this game uses 3. You are right about the gap though. There is simply no way.

strangeaeon4273d ago (Edited 4273d ago )

Wait, let me get this straight, when Xbox Live Compute or DX12 is brought up, it's impossible to close the power gap, but when software or hardware for the PS4 is discussed, the power gap increases. Does that about sum it up?

JP13694273d ago (Edited 4273d ago )

Strange

All your comment sums up is your lack of technical knowledge which has led to you misunderstanding the arguments you've tried (and failed) to describe.

@strangeaeon

Where did you get such insight? Wal-Mart?

BitbyDeath4272d ago

@strange, it will not make it more powerful hardware is set in stone. It will however help harness existing power.

Straight from developer of this game ( paste from GAF - http://m.neogaf.com/showthr... ) :

1st quote :
"...Hey, it's Dylan here from Q,

Thanks for checking out James' presentation, he put a lot of work into that to try and help people understand what is going on with our engine!

The game has freely deform-able geometry which is why right at the start we decided we couldn't go with the more standard graphics pipelines that need a lot of pre-baked information. However, we *did* want the very nice lighting that those pre-baked systems can give (like the lighting you are seeing in the Silicon Studios demo released this week).

When you guys see this game actually *running* in 1080p on your tvs with the lighting all simply *working* you are going to love it; dig into a mountain and the light spills around correctly, and the shadowing from things cast in all directions natually and realistically. It /almost/ looks like a Pixar movie at times and is the closest to that "rendered" ideal I've seen so far in an actual game (not a tech demo). Although I do have high hopes for Uncharted on the PS4!..."

2nd quote :

"...Release information and types of release etc., are entirely up to Sony. Although, because this game is only online, an online-only release does make sense.

Thanks, this is the kind of comment I like to see because I am amazed daily by how it looks. The latest builds actually look a lot better than the footage in those videos now too because we're constantly tweaking and tuning.

The game is a bit of a crazy sandbox experience, we don't force you to do anything really and you can decide either collectively/collaboratively or egotistically to do whatever you want. You could just set up a picnic up in the hills if you like. (of course if everyone does that your beautiful vista might eventually become marred by the sight of the burning town in the distance, but hey, someone will do the work right?)..."

GPGPU programming is the future for game development. HUMA, fine grain compute, GPGPU compute... All on PS4! Mark Cerny, you are genius!

Eonjay4273d ago

Eonjay said: "Mark Cerny is a straight genius."

Yup. Everyone who can read sees that.

PCBOX4273d ago

There is a GPGPU on PS4 because without it you cant see any game running at 1080p. It is a must because GDDR5 and CPU hunger API killing the weak CPU. It is not something magical or unbeatable thats why there are 8ACEs.

Volkama4273d ago

It is the most interesting element of the PS4's design, the biggest unknown in the hardware. I look forward to seeing what can be achieved in terms of physics and such more so than render times.

Wish he could trim a bit off Jenson's laptimes as well ☺

That's actually a lot. Awesome!

No one is buying that tired game again.

Loktai1556d ago

I'm glad to see it back. I was actually sad when it shut down

Eizhale1556d ago (Edited 1556d ago )

I enjoyed this game and was sad to see it go. It’s strange and satisfying all at once. I look forward to playing it again.

A second chance for The Tomorrow Children

From GI.biz: "Towards the tail end of 2021, Q-Games accomplished something very rare in this industry: it had reclaimed its intellectual property, specifically for PS4 exclusive The Tomorrow Children.

In the announcement tweet, the Japan-based company described it as "a historical move by Sony Interactive Entertainment" and it's hard to argue with that. The game was originally published as a second-party title, funded by PlayStation, and it's typical for the platform holder to retain the IP rights in such a partnership."

Lost PS4 Exclusive The Tomorrow Children Confirmed to Return, Developer Regains Rights

Lost PlayStation exclusive The Tomorrow Children will return, after its developer regained the rights in a rare deal with Sony.

BiggCMan1649d ago

YOU DON'T KNOW HOW HAPPY I AMMMMMMM!!!! We are a small group, but we fans of TTC were so heartbroken when the game shut down. We always talk with them on Twitter about how much the game meant to us and how much we missed it. It really is a dream come true to have it come back, I absolutely cannot wait to be in the world again. I hope lots of new people join in on the weirdness and enjoy the incredible atmosphere of the game. Also praying for a PC version where I think it will really shine.

SullysCigar1648d ago

A friend of mine used to love this game. Might be time to see what the fuss was all about!

EvertonFC1648d ago

Colin moriarty, last stand media recently had a interview with TTC and mentioned about getting control back of the ip.
Good interview and worth the watch, TTC want to go f2p with MT which will support a hardcore fan base

GhostofHorizon1649d ago

I knew this was happening in the background but never thought it would actually happen. This is great news for the fans of the game.

It was a neat little game/experience.

Ethereal1648d ago

Very cool of Sony to relinquish the rights to the dev.

Father__Merrin1648d ago

This was an extremely unique game. Please make this on next gen with RT it will shine with that plastic pladough look

BiggCMan1648d ago

So it actually had an early form of ray tracing called voxel cone tracing, the developer calls it. I'm not a big tech guy so I don't exactly what it means but he's explained it a bit on twitter and the discord. And you can totally tell just by looking at the game and comparing it to the ray tracing games today, I just never really knew what ray tracing was at the time so I wouldn't have picked up on it. But now they at least have the chance to improve upon it, maybe add more advanced RT or something. Potentially make it 4k and HDR, 60fps etc. All the good stuff I hope to see!

jznrpg1648d ago

Cool I always wanted to play this but by the time end checked it out it was getting shut down . I’ll give it a fo this time around
