Shuhei Yoshida: Motion gaming is dead until Project Morpheus

"Motion gaming was a big thing but, like with social games, dance games, music or guitar games, I don’t think there’s a lot of appetite for another motion game at this moment," he said.

in my opinion, this is what motion gaming was built for. but lets see what happens when Morpheus gets an official name and it launches.

Lightning Mr Bubbles4284d ago

Project Morphues??

I say motion gaming is dead. <- Period

mikeslemonade4284d ago

Not dead, just hasn't legitimately started.

The technology isn't there. The current motion technology is too primitive.

Clearly motion gaming will be in the future. It won't replace conventional gaming, but it will be a big part of the gaming industry.

d3nworth14284d ago

Agreed project morphues will probably get support for a year or 2 then forgotten. People need to be real. motion controls was just a fad. The wii sold well cuz of it but people stopped playing it after after a month.

sonarus4284d ago

@Lightning. I couldnt agree more. Motion gaming was a fad. I bought into it for about 2 weeks on the original Wii and i was good. It took most people a little longer to get over it but eventually they all did.

Morpheus makes sense as VR technology but it won't be enough. The next step for gaming is full VR gaming and morpheus wnt accomplish this. Morpheus will try and fail we are still a quite a while away from adequate VR tech and oculus rift or morpheus isn't good enough at this stage.

bouzebbal4284d ago

i can assure Yoshida that i'm buying no more "gimmick" before a proven support over the years.
I bought Move, amazing tech and some good games at launch but all of a sudden they stopped supporting it, leaving me with 3 moves taking space.
then came Vita's turn marketed as PS3 in your hands with AAA games only because of the dual sticks.

Sony's main focus is PS4 and PS4 only. I cant wait to be proven wrong with Morpheus but i am for sure not investing in it before at least 1 year and a half after release.

Motion gaming has it's place with or without Morpheus. I have rather enjoyed it with friends and games like Wii Sports and Sports Champions. The problem with motion gaming is that it's an extra expense with limited application.

Motion gaming excels at local interactive multi-player. People have fun playing competitive games with it, or puzzle solving with it from the same room. But when someone is playing solo, it's less fun... feels like a forced gimmick.

Project Morpheus is gonna try and make motion controls something for a solo experience. We'll see what happens. If they can make it immersive without feeling forced, they will do well.

MrChicagoWind4284d ago

Frisbee golf was my shit back in college. Big bong hits and the PS Move.

Lightning Mr Bubbles4284d ago (Edited 4284d ago )

And please let it stay dead.

bouzebbal4284d ago

very selfish and immature comment..
you dont like motion control games?fine! but others do!

C-H-E-F4284d ago

Hmph there goes my sports champions 3 wish list... Soo what's my camera for again? Ugh gotta spend more money for it to work on my games... Hopefully some indie titles will take tear away approach with the camera /dualshock... Love the innovation there.

FriedGoat4284d ago

Your camera is for naked playroom streaming.

C-H-E-F4283d ago

I already had playroom sex with the fiance'... those robots were tumbling like crazy... HAHAHAHA

EvilWay4284d ago

No it's still dead. Morpheus will fail like the kinect did.

Let's be real, no one wants a frying pan on their face to be immersed into a game, it doesn't make you feel any more in the game since you still have to use the controller

4284d ago
iamnsuperman4284d ago (Edited 4284d ago )

I think PC gamers will which is why Morpheus needs to be cross compatible and also release there first. PC gamers tend to spend a lot on these type of experiences/extras. It isn't really a console gamer thing. Though if they can get the support (which needs to be done via the PC since it will be more viable early on) it might migrate its way to console gaming

KakashiHotake4284d ago

How is it more for PC? Aren't you guys the ones always going on and on about keyboard and mouse being superior? Is gonna be pretty difficult to see those tiny keys wearing a Rift headset.

iamnsuperman4284d ago (Edited 4284d ago )

@KakashiHotake

I say it is more for PC since PC gamers, as a whole, spend a lot more on their hardware/experiences than your average console gamer. Something like VR fits very well with not being a sociable/living room experience which PC gaming also tends to fall within.

Also it is a lot easier to get support (for the developers) via the community on PC than a closed platform like a console which is going to be vital in the early stages of VR adoption. It is going to be a big risk for developers making a good VR game which the indies are going to pick up.

thejigisup4284d ago

@kakashihotake a real gamer doesn't look at his input devices while gaming, pc or otherwise.

pwnsause_returns4284d ago (Edited 4284d ago )

I dont think it wont. So as long as the support is there of course. and thats the problem with sony right now...will they stick with the support? there are wide uses for VR in gaming. the first thing that sticks up to me, is racing. Im a big Simulator fan, so being a game like GT or a game like Ace Combat will benefit most from those games. So of course these HMDs like Morpheus and Oculus will be appealing to me, and im sure more people will see its appeal when they try it for the first time.

To say that it will fail, is just kinda early to say right now. There are people that have tried it already and love the device. but to me its more about how much support these devices will have, its lifespan will depend on Sony largely.

it helps alot if games that have VR capabilities on PC which could eventually get ported to PS4 would help alot as well.

This is a whole different ballgame to kinect.. In fact, this is what Kinect and Move needed to be relevant in gaming. Heck even beyond it.

@iamnsuperman

exactly. If sony where to support the PC with this, it would help alot, of course it will compete with oculus, but hey, this would help sony when you think about it. there are PS4 owners who probably own a PC, so when they look at morpheus and they where to find out that it is officially supported on PC, it would be like killing 2 birds with one stone.

bunt-custardly4284d ago

I think VR will be quite exciting but niche. I agree the whole cumbersome aspect of it just doesn't scream mass market appeal especially as people complained about 3D glasses.

These HMD are a long way off from the perceived Star Trek holo deck everyone dreams of.

garos824284d ago

I'm inclined to agree however I'll reserve my judgement till I get to try it for myself.

I really enjoyed the move controllers but at the same time I was quite disappointed there wasn't too much support for them. I loved using it in sports champion, tumble killzone resistance 3 and mag.

I've seen quite a few occulus videos online and the users themselves seem really excited with vr potential. Sony needs to take their time to perfect morpheus as much as possible and I could see it succeed with enough support

lemoncake4284d ago

There are many who hate 3d because of wearing "sunglasses"indoors, so it is a very real problem for pushing this into mainstream gaming.

Using Motion controllers while being completely oblivious of your surroundings sounds like a recipe for disaster also.

wsoutlaw874284d ago

I think a hmd will have a different appeal than those "sunglasses" because it seems more futuristic and something people would want to try. 3D with glasses wasnt really anything new for most.

MysticStrummer4284d ago

I'd definitely put a frying pan on my face if it caused me to be legitimately more immersed in something like Silent Hills. I think using a controller wouldn't be a deal breaker, but obviously two Move controllers + Morpheus would be better.

The questions will be how good is Morpheus and how much does it cost. If the answer to either of those isn't right then Morpheus won't do a thing for motion gaming.

700p4284d ago

Well technically kinect didnt fail on xbox 360. Many people bought it and it also had some of the best selling kinect titles/xbox exclusives ever.

Dante814284d ago

VR will be a great thing for race sims. You almost sound like an old man with that post. Tech will continue to move forward, and you either adapt or you get left behind.

Likely not seeing any action until Morpheus arrives.

weekev154284d ago

You should probably read what he said. Hes basically said Move has failed because its ahead of its time due to it being a 3d motion capture device on a 2d plane. Morpheus will make it relevant again by making it a 3d motion capture device on a dynamic screen.

Personally I think its an awesome and exciting idea which will fail to attract a wide audience. Hope im proven wrong but im 90% sure I wont be.

gootimes4284d ago

I wish they would do another move sports game, those were actually very good!

ibrake4naps4284d ago

I just want to use morpheus with a regular controller

I wonder if he tried to stop Shawn Layden from starting it?

Profchaos18d ago

Technically horizon came out in 2020 under Jim Ryan who took over in 2019

It's hard to tell who initiated the project but the Decima engine makes porting to PC fairly easy so who honestly knows if this was Jim's initiative or not I get the feeling it was

Redemption-6417d ago (Edited 17d ago )

It's actually not hard at all. Shawn Layden said he started it. Shawn Layden has confirmed that he was behind the strategy to bring PlayStation exclusive games to PC. Regardless of whether you hate Jim or not this wasn't his idea. It happened during his watch, but it was started before he took over. Below are links with him confirming it started with him

Fake news. He didnt say that. This video was posted on YouTube and on here they decided to change the title. Shame on you.

i81duce18d ago

At 5:16, he literally states the thing you say he doesn’t say. Did you even watch the video?

GotGame81818d ago

Sony already said they weren't porting to PC anymore. Or, at least that is how I interpreted a couple of articles. I think if it were not for Helix, that may not have happened.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga23d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199223d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga22d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman22d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

blacktiger22d ago

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box23d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion22d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7223d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7523d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit23d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14923d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7723d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
