PS4: Ninja Theory is self-publishing 'Hellblade' to avoid 'watered down' version

Dominic Matthews, who is a communications manager at Ninja Theory, talked about why Hellblade is being self-published, rather than going to a major publisher like they've done with previous games.

Yup.. no publisher breathing down their necks.. they get to work at their own pace.

Could this be the first of many 'independent AAA' games?

Clogmaster4290d ago

Not trying to be a downer, but it might be because no one wants to publish their work anymore given their history.

They complained that Heavenly Sword didn't make enough money.

They blamed Namco Bandai for low Enslaved sales.

And DmC was just a PR disaster and it still failed to sell more than the predecessors and succeeded in dividing the franchise's community.

Army_of_Darkness4290d ago

So basically, they are going all out with the ps4 version, then maybe porting it to the xbone later. Nice.

equal_youth4290d ago

Every game they made was clearly under appreciated but they were pretty good to great games. DMC was something most of us didn't want because we wanted a true sequel not a reboot but nonetheless it was a great hack and slash game. i think they will deliver something awesome and i hope more studios will follow this line of great indie titles.

modesign4290d ago (Edited 4290d ago )

D-Du this is why im scared of star citizen, a game that is suppose to be the greatest thing this milenium yet they cant get a studio to publish it, and thus forced to kickstart.com it,

lol at the disagreers, did you "donate" to the game.

gamer78044290d ago

So basically, they are going all out with the ps4 and xb1 without a publisher, releasing first on ps4 then shortly after on xb1.

Sevir4290d ago

They're games are very much awesome, and have gotten better progressively with each game they've shipped. HS sold 1.5 million units, Enslaved which was better received sold a million units and DmC was well received critically and posted 2 million units life time sales since its release in 2012.

I'm pretty sure they are doing good for themselves, and why they've inked a deal with sony to self publish exclusively on PS4 first...They have a vision and they are going about it this way rather than changing their vision by a publisher.

Their history is of a developer that's made great games but never completely getting the recognition because a vocal minority seeks to bash because of cosmetic changes to a beloved franchise...

gaffyh4290d ago

If its digital only, its more likely that they want the 70/30 revenue split rather than the low return on retail sales.

Clogmaster4290d ago

Personally, I've never liked Ninja Theory games because I find their framerates are usually pretty bad and they don't make combat mechanics to my liking.

BUT, I'll give credit where it is due. I think they make really good games. Not great to me. I love their presentation. It always blows me away. They have the production values in their cutscenes that put several AAA games to shame. Their games are always ambitious, they fall short on my expectations, but the potential is there.

And honestly, I'm just picky when it comes to my mechanics in games. They've been improving on their developing skills with each release.

DragonKnight4290d ago

@Sevir: "Their history is of a developer that's made great games but never completely getting the recognition because a vocal minority seeks to bash because of cosmetic changes to a beloved franchise..."

Proving, once again, that people like you haven't the slightest clue at all.

I'm not going to bother linking the multitude of blog posts, articles, and comments explaining what is wrong with DmC beyond Donte Antoniades' look because I know you've seen them, I know you can look for them on Google, and I also know that you're just using the "they don't like his hair" argument again because you like NT and their mediocre games.

What I will say is that NT made 1 decent game. Heavenly Sword, that's it. Why? Because they had Andy Sirkis and the story was great. The combat sucked, just like the combat in all of their games sucks, but it was their "best" effort.

Ninja Theory is a C team. They are capable of some decent story telling, but spend too much time on motion capture. They butchered the story in DmC, they butchered the characters in DmC, they just stunk up the entire game and franchise with their offering.

I hold absolutely no expectations for Hellblade, especially since all we saw was a CG trailer with no gameplay, but given NT's track record it will have the most mediocre gameplay possible and MIGHT tell a decent story.

elmaton984289d ago

You got some very good points d-du. Arrogance is a killer and I have learned it the hard way( given that I deal with 100s of people everyday because of my business). I've learnt to shut up , listen and give people what they need but not to let them go ahead of themselves. Why was DMC reboot a disaster? Because of their arrogance that's why. You dont change an icon and expect people to be okay with it because it doesn't work like that.

Gorilla_Killa_X4289d ago (Edited 4289d ago )

@Sevir. Just because reviewers say that there games have gotten better(as in higher review scores), most gamers don't feel that way. Looking at their metacritic scores fan reviews show that DmC was a lot less likednthan Heavenly Sword. I personally like their games buy feel that heavenly sword was definitely their best work so far.

S2Killinit4288d ago

D-Du
well, maybe. But its probably fair to remember that Sony's new policy of allowing developers themselves to publish their own games has opened up a lot of possibilities for the developers to compete with publishers who in the last generation would have published these games. This generation, with Sony's policy of self publishing, the developers have a chance for greater margins with bigger risk.

So its also possible that Ninja Theory has decided that they have a good thing going, and that they should not give 90% of the profits to a Publisher (EA, Ubi, Activision) or give up their right in the Title, and instead take the risk themselves but come out big.

Clogmaster4288d ago

^ Good point. Accessibility has changed on consoles this generation.

independent AAA games? Those already exist.

XisThatKid4290d ago

Yea exist but arent too common is his point, if i'm not mistaken.

Moe-Gunz4290d ago

Technically Respawn Entertainment, Insomniac, Bungie, and several others are Independent developers.

They make deals with publishers, but are Independent. Destiny most pre-ordered IP, Sunset overdrive coming, and TitanFall had massive hype. I think it's more common than we think.

What he should say is Self-published AAA games.

OrangePowerz4290d ago

Having nobody breathing down your neck can be good or bad.

Jihaad_cpt4290d ago

So work at your own pace is not good cause if you go to slow you just burn money and that is a bad

user56695104290d ago

"Could this be the first of many 'independent AAA' games?"
Lmao. Devs have been doing this for the longest. What do you think the Witcher is

user56695104290d ago

You still right this is a great thing. A lot of devs have came out and said how much publishers limit their vision and shun new games and ideas.

Elda4290d ago

Good for NT looking forward to playing this.

How Ninja Theory proved independent AAA has a future

“Smaller indie teams that want to make that step up in production values can adopt this kind of model.

No need microtransaction in AAA games. Horizon Zero Dawn can prove that a 60$ game and 20$ Expansion pack can be profitable enough. Hellblade can prove that you can earn enough money by start a small project.

Edit : Major publishers like EA only use microtransaction to keep money for themselves. They only give the developers revenue just little or middle. They are not giving a damn about passion and risk. I'm tired all of this greedy and corruption.

Mikelarry3098d ago

No-one was ever doubting that, its the greedy anti consumer business practices that was going to die. and before the apologist come in here and try and skew this

I understand they have to make money and there are ways about doing this, like senua did not every game has to be a run away success also not every game has to be AAA with big budget. even if they don't learn and keep continue on this path it is not sustainable something will have to take weather is most gamers walking away from AAA games or worse.

FallenAngel19843098d ago

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is this exact opposite business model that We Happy Few adopted

Hardiman3098d ago

Every time there's an article saying how "we don't have enough cash" or development costs are too high I just think of Ninja Theory. They proved there are other ways to do things and that you can get great results. It sold very well and without having a bloated marketing budget it wasn't hard to make a profit. Also it shows if you make a quality product people will come.

Chaosdreams3098d ago

Ah, Hellblade. A game I will gladly purchase once I have the time/money. It's opened up a market from its success, showing that games can have triple A quality, but be at a lower price for the length of what it offers. It creates a nice middle ground.

Horizon: Zero Dawn, along with the Witcher 3 (and there's other IP's) showcase what a AAA game can offer and what it's like when the devs/pubs respect the consumer, and in turn, the consumer respects/adores the pub/dev for what they've created.

babadivad3097d ago

It's a very cool game and it doesn't take a long time to finish.

KickSpinFilter3097d ago

Plated dat bitch...err game.

Why o why3097d ago (Edited 3097d ago )

After some dark bit where those beast things were ready to eat ya i stopped. .....maybe im a cowards....maybe another game took my time...persona 5 i think,..I neeed to go back and finish hellblade...face my fears
