Nintendo is Missing a Huge Opportunity with Mario Maker

"At this year’s E3, I had the opportunity to play Mario Maker, a recently-announced game from Nintendo that lets players design levels for the famous Super Mario Bros. series. I got to the booth and played through a few quick demonstration levels before hopping into the course designer to fiddle with the toolset. I found blocks, warp pipes, various enemies, and a few modifiers at my fingertips. At first glance, it looked like any other Super Mario Bros. level.

But I quickly learned that Mario Maker lets gamers break the rules of the traditional Mario games and put any pieces anywhere. You can make flying Hammer Bros. and multistory Koopa towers. If you can think of it, you can build it, and that’s what Mario Maker is all about. The more creative you get with the small number of tools, the more rewarding the experience becomes.

There were only about nine tools and two aesthetic options, but Mario Maker was nonetheless a complete and compelling product. When my time with the dem...

They already stated more 2d mario games features will be added and online sharing. Panicking already.

DonDon4314d ago

Writer also complained that $60 would be too much. I'd agree if it didn't already come with a campaign in it. Even still, I think $35 is fair. $40 tops.

Metallox4314d ago

It's going to be a retailer game? Is that confirmed? To me the game looks like a nice 15 dollars download. Unless of course you are going to do the most packaged level editor game of all time.

mikeysan884313d ago

I guess Little Big Planet 3 should cost 35$ or 40$. This is sarcasm, yall need to stop acting so entitled.

DonDon4313d ago (Edited 4313d ago )

@ Mikey:

Actually I think $40 would be nice for LBP 3. But due to a drought in ps4 AAA games, I'm sure Sony will push for $60 (I own 1 and 2 when they were greatest hits aka $30 games)

But that's just my opinion--THAT much I know I am "entitled" to.

Don't like it?

Nobody cares.

TekoIie4313d ago (Edited 4313d ago )

@Metallox + DonDON

Considering this allows you to basically clone most of the early 2D Mario games to some extent, I think the price is justified.

@mikesan88

Nothing wrong with disagreeing with the pricing of a game. I do it all the time when I choose to wait for a specific game to go on sale.

Since when is a consumer not entitled to express how much they value a product?

otaku they even said they might include other nintendo games to mess with on it

SkippyPaccino4313d ago

Is it just me or does this prove how little time Nintendo spends on the 2d Mario franchise? Don't get me wrong, the ability to create new levels is amazing, but the other part of me thinks they spend barely any time making a 2d Mario now and they slap a 60$ price tag and they are done. Lol! Then the purest Nintendo fateful give those games high 90s when in the back of their minds Nintendo is laughing "9.5 out of 10 and we barely put an effort, it literally took us a weekend (obviously I'm exaggerating)"

The good thing about this is now Nintendo can stop wasting time on 2d Mario games and get to work on other more interesting projects. Now the community will make more levels if need more...

AWBrawler4313d ago

people seriously complaining about Nintendo's E3 Demos? First Splatoon saying it needs more maps and modes, which they already confirmed it would, now Mario Maker which has all the way to 2015 before release? Whats wrong with people? They were demos.

KaladinStormblessed4313d ago (Edited 4313d ago )

I agree, everyone is freaking out about the number of maps and features and graphics about all of nintendo's games at E3, when all of them are still in development, of course it's going to get better.

Big_Game_Hunters4313d ago

yet all we got from other companies at E3 were mostly 3 minute trailers. I guess Uncharted 4 is only going to be a few seconds long and Sunset overdrive only has one area.

AWBrawler4313d ago

lol exactly. People are just way too eager to judge Nintendo games

Kevlar0094313d ago

I'd spend $60 if it includes a Super Mario World Skin and items, one of my favorite games and the art style hold up well. Also please let there be secret areas (via pipes), I'm sure they will make it a full fledged game with download options

Big_Game_Hunters4313d ago

My question is will we be able to make castles and bossfights?

nunley334313d ago

This be Nintendo's LBP game, it looks great.

A Fond Farewell To The Wii-U - GameRaven

The Wii U had a pretty rough time. At its lowest moments, people mocked it, laughing at the lack of games and third party support. Even when the system was in a good run of form, people still looked down on it. Like the toaster, from the film The Brave Little Toaster (yeah, i’m going … Continue reading A Fond Farewell To The Wii-U

Two of those are remakes so I didn't buy...replace the Zelda remakes with Tokyo Mirage Sessions for the unique experience, or Pikmin 3

CocoaBrother3434d ago

Wind Waker on the Wii U is still a fun game to play and the use of the gamepad for inventory was convenient; however, I do agree with the other two games you listed. If I had to add, Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze is a lot of fun.
Smash Bros. is a game my friends and I will always play. It's such a fun multiplayer game

iplay1up23434d ago

Tokyo Is okay so far, but I need to spend more time with it! Been moving, so have not spent much time gaming the past month. :(

deafdani3433d ago (Edited 3433d ago )

I'd add New Super Mario Bros U (easily the best in the "New" Super Mario Bros series), Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World and The Wonderful 101 to this list.

Edit: holy hell, how could I forget Mario Kart 8... I've already put around 150 hours on that title alone.

superchiller3433d ago

Not even worth it at that price, with such a tiny library of games available (and very few notable ones).

EddieNX 3433d ago

Theres actually a ton of really excellent games buddy Ive got the stack in front of me. You've missed out on loads of amazing games, that's the reality of whats happening here lol.

showtimefolks3433d ago

Metr

Huge library compared to ps4/Xbox one? Or ps3/Xbox 360 because either way it's not comparable

Some of the best games on wiiu are remaster

MetroidFREAK213433d ago

I'll be sure to grab one once they become scarce and are that low

pleasuretokill3433d ago

DKC Tropical Freeze
Super Mario 3D World
Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker
Mario Kart 8

The Wii U has some seriously awesome games!

Scatpants3433d ago

I hope they port Xenoblade to Switch.

deafdani3433d ago

There are rumors about Xenoblade X getting a Switch port.

I'm not interested on that one, seeing how I've already played it plenty on my Wii U, and finished it (but I'm nowhere near completing it, not even close).

I would love an HD remaster of the original Xenoblade Chronicles, though. What a masterpiece.

rjason123433d ago

Yeah I'm not too keen on the Wii U ports myself, especially considering they haven't been out too long (and still look nice) Wii games would be better (if they updated them)

Scatpants3430d ago

I skipped the WiiU so I'll probably be down to get a few ports of it's best games.

When are Nintendo going to actually show what the NX is and give details? Its getting very late in the year now.

Its getting to the point where the silence isn't one of mystery and suspense, but one of concern
