How Often Will We See 8 Gig Console Games?

SchollA from CCU:
Well… we’re moving into the 4th quarter of the year and since most games have disappeared until 2015 :( at least games I was anticipating it got me reflecting once again on the possibilities of next gen gaming overall; I’m still waiting for the “jump” a new generation generally provides and on the topic of consoles how will it take advantage of the new power, history says it won’t… at least not often.

Never. No matter how much optimization is used to free up the OS in the long run (if at all, this time), you'll never have all available RAM used for gaming, multitasking on consoles is more important than ever.

DualWielding4323d ago

a bad programmer can max 8 Gig with 8 bit graphics

wheresmymonkey4323d ago

Never, because neither console suses 8gbs for gaming. they both only use 5gb of ram for games, seriously do some research if you're going to write an article looking at console tech.

system224323d ago

They should also research writing/grammar/punctuation classes. I felt I was reading something written by a 6th grader.

Scholla4323d ago (Edited 4323d ago )

"8 gigs" is not exactly literal I said it's a substitution or metaphor for "maxing out" the console so if it's 5 that's the most that can be use for gaming then the question is how many developers will actually use all the Ram available to them or in general push the console to its limits.

Funny enough I had a piece in one of my editing versions where I say exactly that "Technically never because not all of the RAM is used for gaming" I chose not to use it in the end cause I thought the readers would get it.

And again I use 8 gigs as a launching pad cause that's what these consoles boast and it's suppose to "change the game" overall. 8 gigs = maxed out.

wheresmymonkey4323d ago

How often is the wrong question to be asking though. The answer is al lthe bloody time eventually. that's how consoles work. it's not so much about maxing them out as it is a matter of better ustilising what you have.

Hanuman4323d ago (Edited 4323d ago )

I'm sure Sony will be able to free up more memory for dev's. It has happened before, and it will happen again.

PS3 went from 120mb to 50mb for OS. http://www.dailytech.com/So...

gameon19854323d ago

knock it off, you are making your self look like a idiot. Neither console will EVER use 8 gigs of ram unless they have more then 8 available. I'm sure both will free up more ram in the future, but you are set your self up for disappointment if you think either will use a full 8.

Insomnia_844323d ago

Where in his comment did he say it will use all 8 gigs of ram?

Smh, talk about idiots.

Icenfire4323d ago

Someone isn't reading the comment properly...

system224323d ago (Edited 4323d ago )

You have to take into consideration how the hardware is architected. The new consoles have more multitasking capability etc, bigger OS footprints etc which means that apps running in the bg still take ram even if in a suspended state, the OS is taking more memory for the added functionality and more bg processes and the chunks of memory for actual execution of all these things is bigger. They'll optimize of course but with all new, stuff, the memory's physical capacity isn't scaling with the functionality/bg tasking. Personally I think these things should have launched with an extra 4gb minimum more than they actually did.

DevilishSix4323d ago

By the end of this gen my guess is they will free up another 1 to 1.5 gigs off the OS so we might see 6 to 6.5 gig games but doubt it will be much higher.

bumnut4323d ago

1 - 1.5 GB is a lot, don't think it will be that much.

DevilishSix4322d ago

You are probably right as I was just guessing, but I think some will be freed up in few years as this gen gets older and games get bigger. My guess was based off them probably freeing a half a gig at a time. Can't imagine 250meg would make all that big of a difference, so if its not at least .5 gig seems pointless.

They for sure chose the worst way to deal with it

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose40d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE40d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername39d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy40d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde40d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8639d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8639d ago (Edited 39d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300040d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle40d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
