Square is making a huge mistake with this.
It still won't move Japanese people to buy 360's-not for a couple of rpg's.

Almost twice the install base and 360 has high attach rate.

How does a 'third party' publisher side with anyone? They are free to do whatever they want. I didn't notice this 'PSX Extreme' writing articles about Square-Enix 'siding with Sony' when Final Fantasy 13 was announced only for PS3.

Square-Enix has cited on various occasions that they want to reach a big user base in the Western market. What better way to do that than to support the 360? It sells the most software(has highest attach rate) in North America.

Sony could have done the same thing but they seem to just be sitting on their hands. Xbox 360 seems to be gettting all the RPGs.

Wow this is just wow. Really Square Enix is siding with everyone this year! They are making games on all systems something they haven't done in many many years. I get that some of you started gaming with the PS2 and that's when Square Enix just made PS2 games but this is the here and now. Square Enix sees a lot of units out in the world by a lot of different companies. They want to make money and they want to have a better foot in the US that means they need to open their options. They are not siding with anyone

They are just spreading some talent to Microsoft. This won't affect much in Japan. Don't get your hopes up, at E3 we may hear exclusive projects way better than these timed exclusives. Square knows where their core gamers are.

So the title isn't completely accurate. They are publishing these games though for the 360. Last Remnant though is a confirmed Multiplatform game, and even uses Unreal Engine 3. Star Ocean may be a 360 exclusive, but it's doubtful considering the success the series saw on PS1 and PS2.

Microsoft were pushing pretty dam hard for MGS4 and the two final fantasy games last year. I'm pretty sure that if anything these RPGs are consolation and or deals struck up to counter the final fantasy effect on the Ps3 later in 09.

What doesn't make much sense is why not just release the titles at the same time? Keep certain ones exclusive, that's fine. But the multiplat ones should have a damn multiplat release. More specifically The Last Remnant.

they still have many big guns coming for the ps3, and obviosuly for the nintendo. but square announced sometime ago that they wanted to appeal to the western market more, as western devs are making really nice profits right now.

MS has done VERY well in the US, and even done quite nicely in europe, so why would square not want their piece of that pie, along with their giant piece of pie in japan?

Its MS giving SE money. Period. PS3 will see two of these games in the near future but MS paid for first dibs so there you have it. Stupid stuff like this will continue through out the console war. No big deal.

what I heard is that the deal was that some RPGs will be timed exclusive OUTSIDE Japan...which make sense if you think about it, the largest X360 install base is outside Japan, so by going that way SE sells well in all regions as in Japan the game is also released on the PS3.

MSFT knows Japan is lost, what they are more interested in is Europe and the US, but it's mainly Europe where they are losing (or lost) the advantage over the PS3 (after thursday for sure if there a difference of some thousands) and since Europe is also an RPG region, those timed exclusives have more impact in the PAL and NTSC region than in Japan.

Personally, I would like to see more RPG on the PS3 but I also feel that we are getting amazing games within the next 9 months, so the issue about the lack of RPG on the PS3 is way different to lack of good games on the PS3 as many tries to make it look like.

MGS4, SOCOM:C, RFOM 2, Motorstorm: PR, Wipeout HD, LittleBigPlanet AND multiplatforms like Fallout 3, RE5, etc makes of the PS3 a great console to own, I only have a PS3 and I don't feel I need to look at what the X360 is releasing because I'm satisfied with the games I'm getting unlike X360 owners that today more than ever feel they need to get another console to satisfy their gaming needs.

Man, I can't wait for E3, to see more of Killzone 2, finally official stuff from FF XIII and other surprises SONY has for us...just imagine the feeling when the music of God of War starts playing while Kratos is shown in all the screens around the stage and we get to see gameplay of God of War 3 for the first time!

My absolute favorite Genre of games is RPGs hands down, and for the life of me I cant' figure out what sonys plan here is, alot of sony fans are depending on them to get some good RPGS and right now the only definite ones are Fallout 3, Rise of the Argonauts, and Last Remant which following this announcement we may not ever see till sometime next fall.

I am a Sony fan, but right now Sony is telling me that in order for me to get some RPGs i'll have to go to their competition, I hope they have some plans and they announce them soon because for RPGs like Star Ocean to go to the 360 and the developer to say they may not even do a PS3 version is alittle unnerving.

Not a big fan of JRPG's. They're too linear and your characters aren't customizable enough. The voice acting is generally pretty bad. The whole good vs evil without shades of gray reminds me of bad Hollywood movies. Also, the plots are typically overwrought.

I much prefer Western RPGs like Mass Effect, Fable, and World of Warcraft

I mean I used to play the crap out of FF back in the olden days when it was still a Nintendo title but somewhere along the line I got bored. However, my roommate loves JRPGS and is playing a ton of Lost Odyssey. I'm sure he will be thrilled by this news because we only have a 360 and the PS3 is crazy expensive.

Lastly, after the news from Square-Enix Xbox 360 title and knowing their company philosophy about maximizing profit by exploring all mediums for a product. I would really surprised if FF doesn't come to the 360 also.

I must admit I was worrying about my 360 not having a strong line up this year but look at how thing change :)

Basically, they are trying to make as much money as possible, and the best way to do it is to go Multi Platform on certain titles.

Now, as a PS3 owner, the bigger question is:

How will this affect Sony's Sales in Japan and the U.S.??

My theory. It will put a dent into the install base in Japan, but I can't honestly believe that Last Remnant and Star Ocean 4 will cause a significant spike in 360 sales everywhere else. They just aren't those "must have" titles in other parts of the world that will make you want to pick up a system.

The only way that this could have a significant impact is if FF13 ends up being Multi Platform.

Star Ocean 4 will be multi for sure considering that it won't sell well on the 360. It seems that MS is trying real hard to secure jrpg on their platform this generation, but it's quite interesting to see that people in asia don't give a rat as* about the 360 still. XD May be they know that all these jrpg will make its way to the ps3 eventually?

This game is coming to PS3. More games are coming to PS3 than MS can dream of this year.

Sony will get even more exclusives from Square. Microsft is trying hard to get more Japan sales. They know their users will be playing Gears 2 in America this year.

This move isnt going to help them at all in the US or in Japan. 360 owners in the US play halo and fps games like gears or cod4. 360 is pretty much dead in japan so any game thats released over there wont sell to well.

They should just worry about making good rpg games for the ps3 because those will sell like hot cakes out in japan..

here's the thing, although in the same time-frame ps3 is doing better then xbox360, right now there are aprox. 6 millions more 360's. this means more money. that's reason number 1.
then u've got microsoft and japan, they just don't get along. what microsoft is doing is convincing japanese gaming studios that their console is best yada yada same old story. microsoft also happens to have a lot of money. what they're doing is slowly building some rpg library so that it can hopefully move some consoles back there.
also square enix is a regular company, they want to make money. hell if i ran square i would make pretty much everything multi-platform minus the main final fantasy series.

This is happening because of the user base once heavy hiters from Sony hit the market everyone's minds will change. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots isn't even out yet. Plus I how the XBOX 360 exclusive RPGs (Role Playing Games) aren't on multiple discs like Lost Odyssey. As the months go by memory is becoming more of a problem on the XBOX 360.

I wouldn't say Square-Enix is siding with anybody they are just doing what they said they would do which is support all the systems this time instead of just one.

When you think about it Square-Enix has given Sony and Microsoft their share of exclusives this. Final Fantasy XIII, Versus and White Knight Story for Sony.

Infinite Undiscovery, Last Remnant timed and Star Ocean although that is still on the air on being exclusive.

The PS3 and Xbox 360 are going to have their share of good rpgs in future.

First off all anyone realize that so far all Square-Enix exclusive for 360 are being produced Tri-Ace? Maybe it was Tri-Ace who decided to develop on the 360 for whatever reason. As for Star Ocean's exclusiveness I wouldn't be surprised if it did get released on the PS3. For whatever reason when they announced that Star Ocean 4 was for the 360 I was reminded of the announcement of UT3 for the PS3 at E3 only to realize it was a timed exclusive. I mean would you announce that Star Ocean may be on PS3 at a MS conference. This maybe be MS last chance at Japan and I can see that at least Star Ocean may sell some units seeing that its probably the third most popular RPG franchise in Japan (its probably a toss up between Star Ocean and Tales of... and Shin Megami franchise for third). Still with the likely user base increase that will come with the release of MGS4 in not only Japan but in most regions a multi-plat release for at least Star Ocean is a better decision for S-E and will most likely equal more money. Still I have no doubt that both Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean will be good games. Even if S-E did or did not get paid off by MS at the end of the day its just business and S-E wouldn't make this decision if it they didn't believe it was good for them.

I'm buying a 360 this Winter because JRPGS are my favorite genre.

This isn't anything new for me though. I own a Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube lol.

Just out of curiosity does anyone know when the new chips are coming out for the 360, I thought I had read that it was going to be in august but i'm not quite sure. I want another 360 but I want to play it safe.(I miss Mass effect, and I need Fable 2)

Also I want to point out that I was not in any way bashing MS for getting some exclusives before all I was pointing out was that sony seems to be dropping the ball in this area, We have a few JRPGs coming but there is almost no info on them, Trust me I can't wait for White Knight Story....but Promises only get you so far, sony needs to stop talking,and start getting these games out the door and I will be thrilled.

I support both the 360 and the PS3 they both offer some truly incredible games so I personally see no reason why we as gamers can't admit when fellow gamers are getting something really good. (That green eye will do some terrible things sometimes.)

Ima hardcore gamer but sorry dude I got bills to pay and don't have time to spend running in a circle trying to gain 100 levels on random battles(unless they remade ff7 of course).
Even though I am hardcore I prefer casual rpgs like Star Wars Knights of the old republic,ff vs. 13, kingdom hearts,zelda, where the game feels like you got somewhere after 2 hours I could care less about Square Enix,
I just want the games that I like to be created on PS3 as the lead platform because the otherway around leaves us screwd over.

I dont see any reason for having Last Remnant out first but i gotta give where credit is due. Microsoft is willing to come out and give money to have games come out first or only on their systems. Now I know Sony said they wouldn't stoop to such things but hey now isn't the time to cling to these outdated notions of honour. They are gaining momentum its time to get some knockout hits and exploit your advantage.

They basically dont give a developer any reason at all for coming to their system first or exclusively. Basically its, "hey if you like us you can release on our platform first but if you dont want to we dont care." With Microsoft its, "hey we would like you to come out on our system first but we'll give you cash for it and help you out with some developmental costs". As a game dev which would you take?

Please fogive my ignorance but people are saying Microsoft are throwing money at developers to get timed exclusives, Sony own quite a large number of studios so when these studios make games the bill goes to Sony HQ, wouldnt it be easier and cheaper to get other studios to build and pay for the game, give them half the money it would have cost to make the game and secure exclusive or timed rights for that game?

It has never been announced that FF 13 will be a PS3 exclusive. A lot of Sony owners are just assuming it will be because the previous title was a Sony exclusive. However, history also tells us that Rare sold Nintendo down the river for Sony because of Sony's superior console base.

It's really time for Sony fanboys to wipe the crust from their eyes and realize that:

A) Their console base is padded with people who just bought it for a Blu-Ray player. Thusly, their software attach rate is considerably lower than the 360.

B) Currently, their console base is also much lower than the 360 and devs aren't going to wait around for this to change so they can appease a minority Sony fanboy population no matter how much smoke Sony blows up their asses about the promising future. You guys love the PS3 and think it's super fun and that is your right. However, devs and producers have to put food on their tables and make money. Rare lost a lot of money last year and they need to make a profit. Enter Microsoft with their large console base and deep pockets.

Good luck to S-E, maybe they can sell.. mh.. 1000/1500 copies (total) of the game. In Japan noone cares about X360, once they see how much they could loose doing Star Ocean for 360 only they'll change their mind asap, according to me. A big hit from Sony would be to buy S-E. Thos sotware house did miracles on the previous generations.

just remember Sony could ask them to make ff7 again and all other work will be shunted as of the popularity of the original. Sony used to harp that FPS games were the only thing that MS could do. That they owned the RPG world. That they had all the games and MS has none.

NOW? Sony hypes it's FPS games. They are lacking in RPGs and their software line-up pales to that of MS.

Why did Square make the move that they did? Sony doesn't have a strong stand in Japan right now. MS fans BUY software, SONY fans..? Buy Bluray...? Maybe? Why cry because Square made a good business descission? If Sony steps up and their players start actually buying titles then they will surely start showing them the love again.

But square is not dumb either, they wanna broadened theirs sales to not just Japan but the west as well. In the West we know who is winning.

Right now there are more PS3's sold in the west then there are in Japan so since FF13 is not coin gout anytime soon who cares. Japans user-base is not yet that big and the West don't buy much Jrpgs, since we say the same for the 360's argument.

Businesses are not run by Fanboys, that's why Square is looking out for it's best interest. Rightfully they should.

The ps3 lineup is looking pretty weak this year, well besides MGS4. Little Big Planet looks iffy (level editors are nothing new or overly exciting, in the end this is just an average 2d platformer). Resistance 2 will be ok, but compare this to Gears of War 2, Fable 2, three Square games, Too Human (might not turn out great, I admit), and Banjo Kazooie. It looks like 2009 will be the year the ps3 finally kicks into gear.

How do they rate that?

Do they measure the total games sold vs consoles sold?

That would seem like a really rough estimate but I dunno.

Sony owns the Final Fantasy Series so I don't care what they do.
MS just offered them more money but deep inside they know where the true next gen of videogames and consoles lies and that's with Sony.

Square-Enix is just a company meaning even though it is a real big jrpg company many of the people that made games from them back in the day have there own companys nowadays people that made chrono trigger,final fantasy 1-7 arent there anymore.
I usto love square when they were square and squaresoft.
but whatever I don't play jrpgs ever since ff9 and probly will never again unless a gameshark comes out then I wouldn't mind taking a look at it.
I remember when square was a completely different company back in the days they said ohh we arent going to make ff7 on n64 because they don't insufficient data and catriges arent as advanced as cds.Now square is sticking with DVD if they were the square I usto love they would have said Blu-Ray and built in HDD and cell processor because of the extra storage capacity in order to make our game alot longer but they are going to be left behind technologically.

Well I own a PS3 and a 360 so I'm not really disappointed in this though. But i really fear what will happen if the 360 some how beats both the PS3 and the Wii this gen. MS in power is not something we want to see, its why they waited 8 years to give a new OS and then screwed up on that one.

Have stated them selfs that Final Fantasy 13 and Final Fantasy Verus 13 is only for the PS3. And that they are also making a Final Fanasty game that is for the Wii and aslo the PSP. They have stated that they will not be making a new Final Fantasy game or bringing final Fantasy 13 and Verus 13 to the 360.

The only other Final Fantasy that will coming out on the 360 is an Exp pack for Final Fantasy 11 Online. They stated in a Playstation3 Magazine.

SquareEnixs are just testing the water again with the 360 since they already have FF fans that play Final Fantasy 11 online not a big base of xbox players but some and there useing The Last Remant and Star Ocean to see what happens.

When it comes to Star Ocean they didn't say that Star Ocean will not be coming out on the PS3 they but right now theres no word on a PS3 version on they want to see how the Last Remant sales i think but since all the Star Ocean games have been out on a Console by sony i think i doubt it would only come out on the 360.

But No matter what Last Remant and Star Ocean are not console Salers Final Fantasy 13 and Final Fantasy Verus 13 are and Sony and SquareEnixs Know that the Fan Base for FF are from owners of the Playstation whin Final Fantasy 5 and 6, 7, 8, 9 came out and onwers of the Playstation 2 that hard FF 10, 11, 12 they know that they are people that will buy a PS3 for Final Fantasy and Sony will never let thoes 2 Final Fantasy games to come out on another console so when it comes to JRPG'S and RPG'S and Action RPG there are still alot of titles coming out for the PS3 and some of this games are still being worked on:

the trailers don't say "exclusive to PS3" or "only for PS3". They simply say "For Playstation 3" at the end and were released in 2006, 2 years ago! 2 years before your console flopped like a fish out of water. Do you really think some cgi trailer released 2 years ago that mentions the PS3 at the end is going to beholden Square to develop exclusively for your crap console?

Also, the convention was not announcing every single rpg for '08 and '09. That is something you made up in your fanboy heads to make yourself feel better about buying your crap console.

M$ pays a sh!t load of cash for a Western release while Square still make a killing on th Western and Eastern part of the globe. Thats a Big powermove IMO. These JRPG's cost a forture to make for these next gen consoles so I can't fault Square for trying to get that bread back. You may not like M$ but The Main color for Xbox ain't GREEN for nothing. Next gen been going on for 3 years now and ya'll acting like these practices are something new.

Now you see how it felt when Sony was snatching up exlusives left and right to other system owners.

Remember that SE has given ALL systems exclusives (Final Fantasy III for the DS, Crystal Chronicles as WiiWare, Crisis Core for the PSP, I can go on). Simply put, I just think we're all reading a bit too much into it. SE was not like 2K Games in saying that there was no way any of those games were going to make it to another system and then turning around and doing that anyway (they basically left the door open with their explanation). No one is dumping anyone here. SE is just doing what it has been doing recently, which is giving all systems their own exclusives (which is a rather interesting concept).

Now, watch people begin to fuel the fire if MS decides to show that they gave $50 Million to SE or something.

ff13 take like 4 years to make and need a lot of console power to run, wich will blow up the weak 360.

All those other RPG's are honestly just fillers for the epic RPG's that will grace the PS3. FF13 and white night story will probably do very well. Never thought Microsoft would get so many RPG's though. kudos to them on that.
