The Problem With Eastern Game Design

Both Dark Souls games and Demon’s Souls leave the player to figure things out on their own. Which is fine, but players can kill off important NPCs, or miss them entirely, messing up the whole game for them. Dark Souls II even leaves you to find the NPC who you use to level up with and she’s tucked around a corner, gazing out to sea. It’s even more confusing if you played the first Dark Souls, where you leveled up at bonfires. On top of this, the effigies you use to become human – which you need to do to summon other players – need to be used in the menu, not at the bonfire where you get a prompt to burn them. Burning them stops people invading your game, which happens when you’re human, so you’re basically just setting them on fire at this point.

Some people claim to like this ambiguity, but really they probably went off and read a Wiki.

Many of those who hate Dark Souls II hate it because it's not Dark Souls. The same people love Dark Souls III because it isn't Dark Souls II.

And so many of the issues at the centre of common complaints about DS2 are present in DS3 and sometimes even DS1. The hatred and bile spewed over this perfectly decent game is ludicrous.

I don’t think it’s a terrible game, but like a movie sequel by a different director, for me, it does NOT capture any of the “magic” felt from the Miyazaki entries. Boss battles don’t feel epic, environments don’t have the same sense of awe, the enemy variety isn’t particularly interesting, the art direction just feels bland, about the only thing I can give it praise for is some of the music.

Now, again, this is only how I feel about it, so I’m not trying to invalidate his you feel about the game, but it is the worst entry in the series due to those factors and it’s the least re-visited entry, for me.

Is it decent as a game on its own? Sure. But in comparison to the Miyazaki entries, it does not stack up and I believe that’s where many were disappointed with it.

PrimeVinister381d ago

Completely fair. I cannot disagree either, mate.

MrWood381d ago (Edited 381d ago )

You can also play it in VR flawlessly on PC & controller with the LukeRoss mod so… another reason to jump back in with extra immersion.

It’s not a bad game it’s just not as good as the others

Shadow Man380d ago

The controls felt very clunky to me, I tried playing it after beating Darksouls 3 and it didn’t feel fluid, obviously the hit detection is less superior for been an older game.

I think all PS3 games are still looking good to this day!
God of War Ascension, Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, LBP, Beyond 2 souls, Sly thieves in Time.. other day i played Start The Party.. unbeatable fun

Profchaos549d ago

I think all of those games got remastered which really makes them forgettable on the base PS3 as everyone always jumps to the PS4 iteration

DarXyde549d ago

It's not a comprehensive list.

Moegooner550d ago (Edited 550d ago )

Whoever prepared this. Thanks for writing something meaningful for a change instead of the clickbait crap others do.

Ridge Racer 6 on the Xbox 360 played a lot better than Ridge Racer 7 on the PlayStation 3, which included Ridge Racer 6 tracks. Ridge Racer 6 was the last quality game in the series.

CosmicTurtle549d ago

Both are good games, RR6 looks very slightly better, but this post is not about that.

Inverno550d ago

Another PS3 list another me mentioning 3D Dot Game Heroes

Redgrave550d ago

Yes, this deserves a re-release. I am surprised it hasn't been brought forth again.

StoneTitan549d ago

Must have sold pretty bad. I thought iz looked great but really did not like it

FIELDMARSHALL_P549d ago

@stonetitan it was like a love letter to the original legend of Zelda. I get it probably wasn't for everyone but it's a great game.

FIELDMARSHALL_P549d ago

Game was overlooked by a lot of people it took me back to the 80's playing the legend of Zelda on the gold cartridge for the first time. My kids I their twenties now actually brought it up the other day. I need a ps3 again my last one went out completely. I have so many ps3 games just sitting in a bookshelf. Still got that one up there too. I heard it's worth a lot now or at least was a few years ago, saw some article on it.

Replaying kz2, kz3, r1, r2, r3, kens rage 1 & 2, 3d dot game heroes etc. and they all aged beautifully. Also, playing these games in the hardest difficulty reminded me of how hard games were on the PS3. How I had such a love & hate relationship with these games.

Profchaos549d ago

I'm replaying kz2 on emulator at the moment purely because I want to remap the buttons outside of this it floors me just how good kz2 was on real hardware

Rynxie549d ago

Unfortunately, kz2 crashes for me on rpcs3 around the level where the helghast talks about raditz executing a soldier for poor uniform ethics. When I try and go up the stairs it keeps crashing. I haven't found a workaround yet. Every other game I'm playing works fine though.
