Microsoft has lost an invaluable asset

MMGN writes: The breathtaking polish and compelling narrative that form the foundations of Destiny are exceptionally “Bungie” in their execution, and no one, especially not Halo fans, expected any less from this wonderful developer. Yet, despite 343’s internal experience and passion for the Halo name, it’s very, very hard not to feel as though Xbox has lost an invaluable asset, and right at a time that the console struggles to find an identity.

Godmars2904321d ago

That's just now being realized?

Magicite4320d ago

Both Bungie and Epic games. There will be no Gears and no Halo as it was. But times change and lots with it.

ChozenWoan4320d ago

Just imagine if Bungie was still with MS right now and they were on the verge of releasing Destiny (likely titled "Halo Worlds" or something). XBox brand would be hot like Yoga Fire right now.

OpieWinston4320d ago

As far as Epic goes...I point you to Gears Judgement...
Because Gears judgement was mainly bad because it lost it's direction due to Rod Fergusson and Cliffy B not leading the project.

Rod is working on the new Gears...So that game will be fine and yes it'll be as it was.

As far as Halo/Bungie goes... Bungie firing Marty was a bad sign about Bungies future...They just ripped the heart out of Destiny...Now Paul Mccartney has to carry all the weight assuming he doesn't walk away after first game.

Halo 4 was a pretty good trial... 343 is listening to the community a hell of a lot more than Bungie has ever done. So I wouldn't count them out just yet.

If if's and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas.

mixolydian_id4320d ago

Well at least Marty O'Donnell has been sacked...

343 can hire him and finally get the music on par with where it should be.

Does anybody rememeber the Halo 4 lobby music before it was patched?

Electronic ambulance of death!!!11

"Neeeee, Nawwww, Neee, Nawww"

Ausbo4320d ago

I disagree. The halo 4 music was great. Dont remember the menu music, but the music during the game was epic.

Ausbo4320d ago

No its not just being realized, but this is the first game since they left and its a big reminder

Mystogan4320d ago

Bungie is a great developer but Destiny is definitely not their best. After playing destiny for a while it plain sucks, don't believe the hype. It kinda feels like Halo with super auto-aiming. The game is boring there is no tactics involved in boss fights. Everyone is just running around shooting at everything.

It just feels like a game trying to be what Halo would be like if it had an Openworld MMO and it's failing miserably at it. Elder Scrolls has the same issue.

ShiranaiJittai4320d ago (Edited 4320d ago )

Translation : How Dare bungie give Sony the beta first and exclusive content to Sony platforms for a year. I am going to go bash what is more than likely going to get game of the year instead of just getting it for PS3 or PS4. I will be subtle about it though since everyone is getting sick of Microsoft fans complaining about it and calling them out on it. So instead I will just make generic insults towards the game.

No hard feelings though Fairy Tail is a great series and Mystogan is one of the best characters in the series.

they never own bungie to lose them in the first place ...
and if you're wondering about biying them , no they couldn't because bungie was working on destiny since halo 3 OST so they was already thinking having their own IPs and controlling them ...

ScorpiusX4321d ago

Dude they were bought by Gates himself prior to the launch of the first xbox for a price tag of 50 million. It all went down after the mac expo of 98-99.

zeal0us4321d ago

Microsoft acquired Bungie in 2000. So yes MS own Bungie at one time. However Bungie was allow to go independent in 2007.

ScorpiusX4321d ago

Only after they agreed to relinquish everything halo and it's universe and completed Reach and I think ODST.but yes you are correct.

MeliMel4320d ago (Edited 4320d ago )

Yes it worked out pretty good for Bungie and MS. I think MS also gets first dibs on Bungie games as well.

Edit: or some sh!t like that...or think first refusal.. maybe someone can school me real quick in Bungie/MS relations.

Volkama4321d ago

They really did own Bungie. They parted with the studio on relatively good terms, and kept the Halo IP. It was all very unusual, but it did happen.

Rumour has it that the real reason Destiny lacks open voice comms is that the channels would be filled with Playstation players saying "thank you Microsoft" every time something cool happens. It's just a rumour though.

Ghost_Nappa4320d ago

Please tell me you didn't have a straight face when you typed that.

loulou4320d ago

I didn't realise that bungie became independent in the last couple of months??

Zombro4320d ago (Edited 4320d ago )

Just like the makers of resistance fall of man making games for xbox one sunset overdrive it just happens

mkis0074320d ago

@Zombro

Except Insomniac was never owned by Sony. They have always been a second party playstation dev by choice. Until Fuse.

I have to say I strongly believe that if they would have had a new Halo game ready at launch or soon afterward that they might be the dominate system out there right now. Convincing people to pay an extra $100 would have been a lot easier with a great Halo game as a reward.

Budobear4321d ago

I have to say that I agree.
If they had the Master Chief collection ready at launch I'm pretty sure that would have had a postive impact on sales.

mcstorm4321d ago

You could be right but then again we will see what happens comes the end of this year when Halo Collection is out later on this year.

I also don't think MS losing Bungie has made any difference to the xbox one through and after playing 4 and CEA I can say Halo is in great hands under 343i but that said a lot of this team is exBungie employs.

For me the xbox brand is becoming exciting again in terms of exclusives as we have 343i, Rare, BlackTusk, Lionhead, Tuen10, Playground, Remedy and more who all have world class developers.

I think the beginning of this gen has kind of turned on its head from last gen where Sony were sat there with its game studios and said we now need to look to start making our own IP's and make them stand up above the rest and now Microsoft are doing the same under Phil.

All in all its a great time to be a gamer as we all know Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft have some great IP's on the way.

NZLAnonymous4320d ago

Unfortunately for Microsoft , Rare has not produced a AAA title ever since they were acquired by MS , all they have made in recent years is kinect games , what a waste of a talented studio..

no_more_heroes4321d ago

I've long since been aware of Bungie's brilliance since they were MS first party. Funny that they're only now getting the credit they deserve.

Volkama4321d ago

They have been receiving the credit they deserve since the first Halo released.

But I get what you mean. Now they avoid the vitriol that comes hand in hand with being associated with just one console.

raymantalk14321d ago (Edited 4321d ago )

i for one think it is a good that bungie have gone multiplat gives everyone the chance to play there games it is a good for everyone

Its neat especially since not everyone might have two friends playing it. Makes it more personal to go at in duos.

It's 2026 and basic match making features in MP games are still being drip fed to an audience that still gets excited over said basic feature being implemented.

Almost 16,000 reviews on Steam currently has the game sitting on a very positive 90% Not sure if it has the player numbers but those who are playing seem to be enjoying themselves.

Putte74d ago

And as of now a 5.1 user score on metacritic. Really bad.

LiViNgLeGaCY74d ago

On Steam, you have to have bought the game, in order to play. On metacritic, ANYONE can review it. I'll leave it for you to decide which one matters more.

The game is really really bad. So generic boring and lifeless. UI is terrible. Bad and slow gameplay. Not sure who gives the go ahead for these games. Insane all that money companies just throw away for no reason. Nobody a asking for these games

LiViNgLeGaCY74d ago

You haven't played it. That much is apparent from your comment. Gameplay is FAR from slow and boring. I do agree the UI definitely needs to be re-worked. But then again, you're just repeating a complaint you're reading about, not actually experiencing.

MrNinosan74d ago

Can you show any proof you've actually played it, by sharing your PSN ID or Steam profile? Nah, guessed as much.

Outside_ofthe_Box74d ago

Gunplay is the best thing about the game. To call it bad is wrong. Just because it isn't a twitch shooter doesn't mean it's slow, not everything has to play the same. Everything else is generic I agree.

Flenter74d ago

Yes I am. But tell me ,with goty games do you play? Have you even played Marathon? If not ...S T F U!!
So sick and tired of the hate BS 🤮🤮
