30 frames per second is bad

30fps is slowly becoming a standard for this new generation of consoles as more and more games use it. Game developpers prefer to pump resolutions over the smoothness of 60fps. Is this the good compromise to do ? Jeff from ThumbNation join the voices of many gamers that dont think so.

sure every game benefits from 60 fps but 30 fps is just fine for games that don't require immediate response time and has a slower camera speed on your 3rd or 1st person views. i would honestly rather have 30 fps (with very beautiful graphics) than 60 fps with ( so so graphics)

PinkEye4343d ago

I don't mind that Bloodborne is 30 fps. But Driveclub? Shoulda been 60 fps but I'll wait to try it.

But fighting games and fps games need 60 fps. I have BOTH the ps3 and ps4 beta's for DESTINY, and aside from a slightly better resolution, it has this annoying (in my opinion) feel to it by being 30 fps. There's no reason that ps4 couldn't have done 60 fps after seeing how it barely looks any better than the ps3 beta. Even the textures look upscaled, rather than true 1080p.

GundalfDeGrej4342d ago

Personally I prefer 60 fps AND very beautiful graphics but maybe that's too much to ask?

dcj05244342d ago

Gonna have to wait for PS5 for that buddy.

Or build a PC.

Vegamyster4342d ago

@dcj0524

Mario Kart 8 is a recent example of a pretty game that runs 60 fps, the PS4/Xone are more then capable if the games have a higher emphasis on art style.

Clogmaster4342d ago (Edited 4342d ago )

Wait for a PS5?

2 Generations ago we had top end graphics games running at 60fps. Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, Gran Turismo, God of War, Twisted Metal Black.

Last gen framerates got dumped. Example, the AAA Lords of Shadow 1 often ran below 30fps.

Now this generation, 60fps hopefully makes a comeback, because arcade games have been doing 60fps before most gamers were born.

lelo4342d ago (Edited 4342d ago )

Gameplay always comes first, even before graphics. At 60fps the game feels smoother.

seanpitt234342d ago

I think if a game is locked in at 30fps and never dips is fine and as long as the graphics are turned up to max.

KwietStorm_BLM4342d ago

There's a huge difference between locked 30 frames and never dipping, and straight up 60fps. They're not equal, ESPECIALLY talking about a shooter. I really don't know why this argument still exists.

Ezz20134342d ago

that editor must have missed tons and tons of amazing games because teh 30fps not good for him

i'm not feeling sorry at all for him

memots4342d ago

He must have missed about 90% of all games last gen. Including uncharted, Halo, thou list could go on

Saying 30fps is bad, and trying to convey it as a fact, is the same as saying that you hate just about every movie ever made (24 -30fps)

Fishy Fingers4342d ago (Edited 4342d ago )

Such a poor analogy. Films are design around and cater to the FPS. Camera movements are rehearsed and meticulously planned. In games to have free reign to quickly adjust camera movement and POV.

There are host of reasons why the comparison to movies/TV is redundant.

When a game requires twitch movement or fast reactions, 60fps is invaluable. But conceded slower paced games can be perfectly enjoyable at 30.

GundalfDeGrej4342d ago

Saying that 30 fps is "bad" is subjective. However saying that 60 fps is better from a gameplay standpoint IS a fact due to reduced input lag. The game actually controls better. People who say they can't see the difference just haven't been exposed to it enough.

And like Fishy Fingers said, comparing games and movies just doesn't work for a number of reasons.

Spotie4342d ago

I can think of entire genres, like RTS, that gain nothing from 60fps or greater, except to look a little better.

GundalfDeGrej4342d ago

I didn't say it's absolutely necessary to have 60 fps for EVERY game out there. I just said that it's objectively better.

You can get Hall effect controllers slightly cheaper, but you'd struggle to find as feature-rich a package without some heavy, heavy sales.

I fail to see how this is AI shhhhlllloooop. Looking at the different games they showed, this has made many of them look far better.

isarai_lee79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

It's AI slop because it ignores the artists intent and changes the details ESPECIALLY when it comes to character faces. The scariest part of it is introducing it as the next stage of DLSS, a feature where the current iteration already has controversy surrounding it and for quite a lot of games cannot be fully disabled. So reasonably the precident is already set for what path this could take, and it's not good

blacktiger79d ago

In case you didn't watch the video then let me point just one part. It overrides the lighting. Then the question of what is the point of ray tracing cost and so on. Many of the lighting deletes shadow, including shadow on the face like eyes even chin.

Chard78d ago

Why stop at art when it comes to human input - why not just have AI play the game for us, remove human input altogether

theshizer79d ago

If you don’t like it, just don’t enable it. Personally I think it looks great from the videos I have seen.

isarai_lee79d ago

And what about when you can't? Cause there's plenty of games where you cannot fully disable dlss already, i mean we're well into an era where it's a major crutch for developers to cover up their cut corners, why would this be any different?

blacktiger79d ago

You are playing with people's money and allow Nvidia to scam you.

In case you didn't watch the video then let me point just one part. It overrides the lighting. Then the question of what is the point of ray tracing cost. This is all lie to raise the cost of the graphic card.

Making characters look more realistic not ok because we want the developer to decide on how the game was intended to look. - Internet

Change entire game through mods thus changing how the developers intended the game to be is ok. - Internet

isarai_lee79d ago

Something consumers can do to a product after they have purchased it, entirely optional and can always be undone with a fresh install

VS

The leading gaming hardware manufacturer making this the next iteration of the main AA/Upscaling technique that is heavily relied upod by modern devs and is not optional in most games.

Not at all the same but nice try

jwillj2k479d ago

At the moment you need 2 5090’s just to get an image on the screen so this is all vaporware until proven otherwise.

Andrew33679d ago

The good news is you can just not use it as well.

Christopher78d ago

It's all about choice in the end. But, I would say that calling it 'more realistic' is quite a stretch. It looks like AI art, and that's rarely realistic.

Urrakia3479d ago

All the comments I see are reminding me of how we got to the current state of gaming when microtransactions were first introduced: "It's completely optional guys, we promise! If you don't like it just don't buy it!"

I think we all know how that ended up.

Popsicle79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

I had the same exact thought the first time this was brought up in a separate article about a week ago. Took me straight back to the conversations surrounding “horse armor.” Just don’t buy it they said. Years later, many IPs I previously enjoyed are so infected with monetization schemes that I don’t even consider purchasing them anymore.

DLSS 5 and the like are the same thing wrapped in a different package. History rhymes but many of us never learn from it.

blacktiger79d ago

Biggest Scam. Overrides lighting and shadow. So why keep Ray tracing? It's all a scam to raise graphic card. We now see Nvidia with Microsoft downturn anything against them. Sony is next!
