Why is Microsoft hiding Xbox One sales?

Microsoft has released its latest quarterly figures, showing that the company’s Xbox is selling rather well and making the company a fair bit of pocket money. That’s good! But there’s a problem. They seem to be shying away from disclosing sales figures of its newest console; obfuscating them as a general Xbox lump sum.

Creative accounting at its best. Is all spin, that leads me to believe the X1 is doing more poorly than imagined.

Ballsack4322d ago

Well microsoft this gen have resorted to releasing SHIPPED numbers..last gen when they were outselling ps3 in the states they had no problem releasing sold through numbers...and gloating with it..

Now they are getting whopped its suddendly shipped numbers to buff out the illusion of selling well..

JohnJ4322d ago

Microsoft is a company with a winning mentality - it's how they became a profitable multi-billion dollar company. They hide the figures because revealing them vs the ps4 sales makes it look like the xbox is doomed to some and people may choose to buy the ps4 instead. They will do everything they can to ensure the xbox wins, and they believe it will happen. The ps4 is selling great, but when Micro$oft get backed into a corner - exciting things can happen.
- great time to be a gamer!

Gazondaily4322d ago (Edited 4322d ago )

Didn't Sony do this last gen too?

What does it mean? Well it's obvious that the sales figures aren't impressive enough to reveal hence this kind of spin. Expect numbers to be released in the future when/if the X1 starts to sell decent numbers.

SaveFerris4322d ago

@JohnJ

Exactly. MS is padding the numbers in order to not scare off buyers. If a product is shown to be selling poorly to a competitor, consumers may shy away from purchasing it fearing lack of support and a possibility that the product will be dumped at some point.

tbone5674322d ago

Xbox is doing great. Xbox Profits rose 14%. Live subscription profits rose 26%. 2.42 billion more dollar was made from Xbox hardware and services. Xbox software rose 18%. MS just released earnings for this quarter.

DeadlyOreo4322d ago

*Waits patiently for Truefan1's Microsoft defensive comment*

Dehnus4321d ago

Microsoft also released shipped numbers last generation. I remember some people calling foul at that. So please can we stop this pissing contest now?

No_Limit4321d ago (Edited 4321d ago )

@Ballsack,
"Well microsoft this gen have resorted to releasing SHIPPED numbers..last gen when they were outselling ps3 in the states they had no problem releasing sold through numbers...and gloating with it.."

WHat are you talking about??..please do some research before face palming yourself. MS has always released shipped numbers for all their products including the Xbox 360. How is this any different? Here are the 2013 quarterly report from last year regarding X360 shipment figures.

http://www.gamasutra.com/vi...
Xbox 360 sales remain strong, moving 1 million units last quarter
"In the earnings statement, Microsoft reported that it shipped 1 million Xbox 360 consoles in the fiscal fourth quarter ending in June"

http://www.polygon.com/2013...
Microsoft shipped 1.1 million Xbox consoles in Q2 2014
"Microsoft shipped 8.9 million Xbox 360 consoles in the first nine months of fiscal 2013, whereas it shipped 11.1 million units in the same period of fiscal 2012"

FYI, here is a little secret..all companies including Apple, Samsung, and yes...even Sony release shipped figure on their reports as shipped = sold for these companies as far as financial reports goes.

Here is one such report from Sony from just last year.

http://www.gamechup.com/son...
Sony ships 2 million PS3s in Q2 FY 13
"Sony has revealed its Q2 FY 2013 figures and they have shipped 2 million PS3s."

nix4321d ago

@JohnJ:

"..but when Micro$oft get backed into a corner - exciting things can happen."

like original xbox. halt production and release new console.

Ballsack4321d ago (Edited 4321d ago )

@nolimit...

Firstly i couldnt give a toss about sony reporting shipped numbers or microsoft, the article was asking why and im real so i said whay you fanboys dont like to hear..

Was i talking quarterly or monthly npd numbers?

Monthly Npd microsoft would tell us sold through numbers and the fanboy wars would rage on n4g and im sure you was in the midst of it

There we go now give yourself a total 'nolimit' facepalms

Death4321d ago

@Ballsack,

NPD tracks sold through numbers since the manufacturer only knows how many they sold to retail (shipped). NPD compiles a list of sold products monthly and offers a report which they sell to the manufacturers. NPD buys this information from retailers which is why it's a paid service and also why fake tracking services like VGC are always wrong.

Ballsack4321d ago (Edited 4321d ago )

@death

I agree with you buddy

I was talking about monthly numbers

Then i get nolimit writing a novel on quarterly statements..

Eonjay4321d ago

@No_Limit

For the last several years up until about two months ago, Microsoft used to post their monthly numbers on their blog. That way you could see exactly what they sold in the US anyway.

jmac534321d ago (Edited 4321d ago )

@JohnJ When Microsoft gets backed into a corner they hiss, scratch and piss all over themselves.

showtimefolks4322d ago

can they really hide it for long? because sony will keep revealing the actual sales of ps4 and MS will have no choice but to reveal it

i am expecing 13-14 plus million ps4's sold before end of 2014.(these numbers are on the low end IMO, i think its a much safer bet to assume ps4 will surpass 15 plus million

july with the last of us will help sales

but the biggest jump IMO will be the white ps4 with destiny bundle

lelo4322d ago (Edited 4321d ago )

"Why is Microsoft hiding Xbox One sales?"

The same reason Sony and Nintendo hide their numbers when they feel the need...

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory4321d ago

Nintendo never hide numbers. They didn't with 3DS or Wii U.

Sony on the otherhand does with Vita.

Darkstares4321d ago

They ALL hid numbers, it's why Neogaf every month tries to determine how many sales actually occurred each time NPD reports come out. They ALL spin the numbers too and we are seeing Microsoft do what Sony and Nintendo have done, combine sales.

Sony stopped reporting hardware sales last generation on the PS3 and Nintendo is doing it for the Wii U and now so is Microsoft. ALL of them will do it if the real numbers aren't showing strong sales.

CaptainObvious8784321d ago (Edited 4321d ago )

Am I missing something?

1.1 million in 3 months is extremely low. Even is that 1.1 mil was all xbone, the PS4 has roughly sold 2.5-3 mil in the same time frame.

Is this just for the US?

Someone please explain it to me. Thanks in advance.

press-start4321d ago

nope its worldwide and yh 1.1 million is pretty bad and thats xboxone+360.

not looking so good microsoft.

n4rc4321d ago

300k a month is low?

Good thing you guys don't run companies ;)

MeliMel4321d ago

Actually could be other way around. If it was as bad as you imagine I dont think new CEO would be trying so hard to save a brand that most like yourself see doomed.

johndoe112114321d ago (Edited 4321d ago )

And if it wasn't as bad as we imagine why would the CEO need to "try hard" to "save" it? in what reality do you fight to save a popular top selling product?

MeliMel4321d ago

Shit, I worded that wrong. XB doesnt need saving. According to MS its selling better than Xbox360. But I mean is that for a console most think is doom, dont you think he would just pull plug. Instead hes making moves that may benefit xbox. I just dont see where some like yourself would see the need for xbox supportters to worry.

otherZinc4321d ago (Edited 4321d ago )

Sony hasn't reported anything actual either.

In fact, the PlayStation division hasn't recorded a profit in 8 years. Except, the one quarter Sony passed it's R&D costs to another division within Sony Corp.

The PS4 is finally making a $12 profit off the PS4 only after they laid off hundreds in every department & development studio owned by Sony. Including Naughty Dog & Sony Santa Monica.

The XBOX ONE is more profitable than the 360 without layoffs.

Tell the truth sometimes.

jmac534321d ago

Oh great, now we are talking profits. This article is about the sales not the profits of the individual companies. Totally different things, especially since these are multi-faceted companies.

You are so correct, and giving information straight is something MS has a hard time with. Very shady company.

mrpsychoticstalker4321d ago

That is absolutely every ps4 fan dream.

GavinMannion4322d ago

Well they are making a full eco system so it makes sense to join all the family sales together..... you're just bitter that the Xbox One is racing to the number One spot

Yeah not even a total fanboy would believe that, dodgy business is dodgy Microsoft

zsquaresoff4322d ago (Edited 4322d ago )

Even xbone fans know that they can't be No.1 when they're system is being outsold in their own backyard by ps4.

NatureOfLogic_4322d ago (Edited 4322d ago )

I had to Lol at a third place console racing for the number one spot when it can't even outsell the console in the number two spot.

Volkama4322d ago

Simple things please simple minds I guess

moonstormer4322d ago

MS just can't get anything right when it comes to the Xbone - I want that controller, but I think I'd rather just use it on a PC than deal with this beleaguered console.

Darranged4322d ago

Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2, new Gears of War. The tide shall turn soon!

DeadlyOreo4322d ago

The disagrees are pouring in. Funny stuff! Shows how popular the Xbox One is here.

johndoe112114321d ago

@DeadlyOreo

Disagrees are pouring in because every month we keep hearing the same "tides will turn" comment by microsoft fans on this site, and when it doesn't we keep hearing more and more excuses and more "wait until this" and "wait until that" comments. We're getting tired of waiting.

Just like Titan fall was meant to be their system seller.

Oh.... it didn't do what people expected? Hahahaha xbone and its fans just keep me laughing.

Kavorklestein4322d ago

Titanfall did help sell systems. How much, is to be debated, but it did actually help. Not saying BX1 is goin to be number one, but It's not doing that bad, and until we hit one year of being on the market, I really don't think there is much point in worrying about sales. Even then, it's not even JUST ABOUT SALES.

I think all 3 are doing better than I expected, considering how well the 7th gen consoles did and how large their libraries are.

rdgneoz34321d ago

"Titanfall did help sell systems. How much, is to be debated, but it did actually help."

True, it did sell systems. But if you were thinking of getting an xbone and you didn't pick up the Titanfall bundle for $450, you were crazy. They were taking $50 off the system and giving you a free game...

Still, MS has been vague about sales and EA has given similar responses to sales - no breakdown, all lumped together. That doesn't really help build consumer confidence.

PS4OUR4321d ago (Edited 4321d ago )

Yep, Titanfall according to Xboners was meant to pull system sales level with PS4.

That didn't happen.

Dropping Kinect was meant to pull sales level with PS4.

That didn't happen.

Dropping the price to PS4 level was meant to pull sales level with PS4.

That didn't happen.

Hell, according to the Xboners the E3 Blowout was also meant to push Xbox One sales.

That didn't happen either.

One thing is certain, the delusion amoung Xbox One fans is worrying.

*EDIT: People forget, MS was the company that tried to pull DRM on gamers and its rediculous policies hurt them in more ways than one. That and the initial Xbox One pricing stratedgy coupled with ramming Kinect (a peripheral not favoured by the core gamer) down consumer's throats did them no favours either. And the nail in the coffin? No killer Kinect app so you were essentially stuck with a webcam that had no real gaming applications. So the average Joe asks himself. Why should i buy a $500 system, that is underpowered and has this camera but no real content to take advantage of versus a cheaper, more powerful system that gives me the choice to add in a camera if i choose to.

Hanso4322d ago

The Last of Us Remastered,Driveclub,LBP3,The Order 1886,Bloodborne,Uncharted 4,The Last Guardian,Guerrilas new Game, Santa Monicas new game, Quantic Dreams New Game,London Studios new game ect .ect

The Gap will only get bigger! LOL

poor_cus_of_games4322d ago

Keep on lining up them excuses lol.

SpideySpeakz4321d ago

Sunset Overdrive? I'm pretty sure it will be revealed a year from release as a time exclusive.
Forza H 2? From a technical standpoint, it has nothing on DC. Besides, The Crew looks better.
GoG? Seriously? Its a dead franchises that over stayed it's visit.
The only tide I see is PS4 domination.

ritsuka6664321d ago

I doubt Sunset Overdrive will sell more consoles...

Predaking774321d ago

The same was said about Titanfall and what happened?

Total embarrassment.

Microsoft Gaming Revenue Drops 7% Year-on-Year, Content and Services Down 5%, Xbox Hardware Down 33%

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio22d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing22d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit22d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing22d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay24d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn225d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn224d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown25d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay24d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay24d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac24d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger25d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300025d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde25d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde24d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_24d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
