How the Destiny beta changed my mind

If imitation is the highest form of flattery, then Bungie must think very highly of themselves. Check out our thoughts on Bungie's recent Destiny Beta, and how they've justified the hype.

Or how the Destiny beta either confirms or changes the minds of just about everyone who tries it!

First off, Killzone multiplayer IS amazing but Bungie does multi so very well. Second, the Hardline Beta has issues b/c it will at launch too. Destiny is so well polished b/c its done and they are now testing networking and tweaking/balancing gameplay.

This game is crack for fps/mmo players. And borderlands loot system negated its relevance by saturating you with too many similar drops. This is perfect. And the endgame is going to be epic.

Think about this. The strike team mission is the very 1st 3 player mission available. Imagine what end game raiding will be like? You cant can you?

Palitera4318d ago (Edited 4318d ago )

Have you played the beta?

The MP shown this far is atrocious. There's nothing polished about this part of the game. Feels like a MP game from a mediocre studio, plays a lot like ugh Blacklight, same level of quality IMO. But still worse is the missed chance. Why the hell the MP matches have to use the same formula used since Counter Strike came? Why the hell they didn't do it in large open maps, like in the actual game? I admit. I come close to getting mad when I think about the stupidity and specially how coward they are in some design decisions.

Edit: if you were saying BL's loot was repetitive (which is a complete absurd, btw, since it's probably the game with the most creative loot ever made), you'd better don't wake up and play Destiny's beta. A gear game where gear doesn't drop and, when it does, it makes Diablo 3 look good. Also, in BL you could sell your gear for reasonable prices.

Not saying the game isn't fun. It is. But there's quite some really terrible, uninspired and underdeveloped things on it.

Dannycr4318d ago (Edited 4318d ago )

Why is it atrocious? I would like to confirm if some of my assumptions are the same as yours.

I find the MP kinda unbalanced. There is indeed plenty of lag and now an overabundance of camping snipers.

Despite that, it is near perfect. The world is really cohesive where even the MP is an integral part of the entire world.

Palitera4318d ago (Edited 4318d ago )

1. Aim assist is ridiculous. It slows before you're on the target. And there's no way to disable it.

2. It is derivative as hell. Take of the super (since the other "abilities" are grenade and melee) and you're playing a poor man's Black Ops. Look at the models and the movements of the chars. I dare you to find ANY high profile shooter with worst animations.
I know they are in the core game as well, but outside the MP you don't pay so much attention to other players' models. It is really bizarre such an expensive game to have such poor animations.
I was testing the PS4 share system today and watched some BF4 recorded gameplay. A joy to my eyes after so much beta playing. The smoothness of the movements... Exactly the opposite of Destiny's MP.

3. The frame rate is a joke. May be improved sure, by I don't think such a bug change will actually happen.

4. No team balancing apparently.

5. Whoever gets a tank is every time the MVP of the room. Great balance.

6. The maps bring NOTHING new.

7. Lag and terrible hit detection. I think I have recorded movies of entire games where almost no shot was computed.

There's a lot more wrong. The post is already a chore. It just seems rushed and cheap to me, a normal PSN game like Blacklight or any other random copy paste.

To be fair, I can't see how people can defend it. Bioshock 2 did it. Batman Arkham Origins did it. Far Cry 3 and Tomb Raider, and many other did this uninspired half a**ed MP. Exact same design, same player count, same map size, same guns, same modes.

To me, Destiny's MP is underdeveloped trash. But I'd like to hear your opinion.

-

About Halo, it is vastly superior, with double the frame rate, couch coop, much better animations (shouldn't even compare), tight aiming mechanics, super responsive controls etc.

-

Edit: finally, everyone knows it is a beta. But some of us also know how much it is representative of the final game. Obviously there will be improvements, but what's in the MP beta is deeply flawed, that's why I think the game will actually be released with a rushed PVP arena, but obviously it's my opinion.

Am_Ryder4317d ago (Edited 4317d ago )

No idea what game you've been playing, bud.

My experience of Destiny's competitive MP has been something along the lines of:

- Perfect hit detection with no lag

- Perfectly balanced; any time somebody started dominating with a tank or camped in a tough sniper spot, I ALWAYS found ways to kill them after they got me once or twice.

- Animations are fine. I haven't noticed anything particularly bad about them. I notice animations far more in SP, not sure what you're on about.

- Maps don't need to be big to be good. First Light is an astonishingly well designed multiplayer map. And also this is only BETA, there are, what, 5 other modes to come? Possibly with variations on maps. There may be some huge ones.

- In probably 7 hours of playing I've noticed perhaps one or two drops in FPS. It's consistent from my end.

- I haven't played CoD MP since Modern Warfare, so I'm not sure about your black ops comparison. But I bet Black Ops doesn't have grenade/ ability cooldowns, customizeable and levellable abilities like Glide> Blink for the Warlock, etc. etc.

Are you playing the Xbox One version or something? Or is your internet connection inconsistent? There must be a reason your experience is so different.

Clown_Syndr0me4318d ago

I think people are getting blinded by the hype. The PvP is crap. It feels like one of those f2p shooters on PC or XBL. It brings nothing new to the table at all.
Sure its kinda fun, but so was Titanfall for like 3 days.

Palitera4317d ago (Edited 4317d ago )

Funny, it's the EXACT same feeling I had when playing the crappy underdeveloped generic MP. Feels exactly like that F2P trash almost no one stands.

The thing is: most people are more susceptible and take longer to wake from "hypnosis"... (Happened with BF3, Homefront, Watch Dogs, AC3, it's happening with COD now etc). Then they praise the groundbreaking BL sp + CoD mp and later complain why big games companies are so coward and uninventive. Because players fall on for any scheme.

Surely the whole game is a good package, but "almost perfect" and "huge risks"?

Homework for these people: play BL, COD 4 or 6, BF4, Reach and RDR. Then we talk.

mrmonk4318d ago

I just got the beta today so will Av a we blast after work se wat all the fuss is about think I'll try the hunter was between hunter & titan hope its good i need something new 2 play been on bf4 from day 1 lol

Omar914317d ago

I find pvp to be addicting and fun. I do wish that the maps brought more to the table like dynamic weather changes or level design changes ala gears of war, but hopefully the other maps have something that will set it apart from the few stagnant maps we have seen in the beta. I also would like more maps with vehicles but before they do that, they need to balance them a lot more. The tank looking vehicle imo is over powered

M1GO4317d ago

Yeah, the vehicles on the moon map are definitely overpowered. This is by no means a balanced PvP, and I don't think it'll ever be, but in terms of fun, it's way more fun than I expected to have. I was honestly expecting it to be a lame imitation of Halo...

Omar914317d ago

Well bungie has been doing the whole maps and vehicle's thing for a long time. Im sure they will find a perfect balance between players on foot and vehicle's.

He paid billions for Starfield. This should be the real story.

Microsoft bought all of Zenimax Media for 7 billion, while Sony paid 4 billion for Bungie. I think Microsoft got the better deal due to acquiring Fallout, ElderScrolls and Doom.

623d ago
anast623d ago

This can't be true. They only bought Starfield...

@anast
Should've thought that one out buddy, lol.

Yeah, I thought it out. I'm not sure you did. But since we are buddy's now, you're welcome.

So you're saying that Microsoft has missed out on so many huge gaming franchise in the last 25 years from GTA exclusivity to guitar hero and destiny it's just laughable they had so many misses

Reaper22_623d ago

Yea, but they're still 100 times more wealthy than Sony. I would say it worked out well.

Gamingsince1981623d ago

Xbox is dead all that money doesn't help.

Hypertension140623d ago

What has work out well? It sure as hell had nothing to do with Xbox.

andy85623d ago

That isn't because of Xbox though. This is a gaming page, not an I get supplemented by father Windows page

Bathyj622d ago

Microsoft's money has nothing to do with Xbox.
Xbox is a money pit to them they would love to ditch but are after some ROI first.

Let's face it, Xbox is like a red headed stepchild that steals from you to buy drugs.

Hofstaderman622d ago (Edited 622d ago )

MIicrosoft is NOT XBOX. The current situation illustrates this. And Microsoft wants its ROI.

@Bathyj and daddy Satya has just force admitted Phil to rehab.

gold_drake622d ago

you know why MS has so much money, and it aint cause of the gaming xbox branch.

so lets not kid ourselves.

PhillyDonJawn622d ago

Xbox was shown to be more profitable than ps

jznrpg622d ago

@PhillyDownJawn not more profitable. More revenue with ABK acquisition but them going multiplat shows they are not making much profit

ocelot07622d ago

That's great for Xbox gamers ain't it that Microsoft are more wealthy than Sony. Is that really a argument use are using now lol?

Imagine me in my job. Arguing with a fellow security guard at another company. Hahah well the company I work for is worth £800m the one you work for is only work £600m!

622d ago
Knightofelemia622d ago

Microsoft may have more money but Sony has the talented studios and the games to back up those studios.

Plus turning down Marvel too. Spiderman is only exclusive to Playstation because of that

Hedstrom622d ago

Best deal deal in gaming must be when Sony bought Insomniac for 229 million dollars. They made over 800 millions on Spiderman for the ps4 alone. Thats just crazy!

XBManiac622d ago

More in the 1.000 million now.

gold_drake622d ago

another Interview?

how is he the only one who loves the spotlight as much as he does lol

Futureshark622d ago

Let's not forget he also famously passed on Spider-man, Genshin Impact and GTA3.

However it's almost kind of cute how he can keep that sh1t-eating grin and say he's a 'no regrets' kind of guy, especially when you think how much just these 5 titles could have swung the world in Xbox's favour instead of Sonys.

How he's kept his job I don't know, he must sure be keeping Papa Nadella's shaft warm somehow.

"But, but Gamepass, he introduced that!!!"

Yes he did, and now look at Xbox, all it's exclusives are coming to Playstation now rendering the platform obsolete.

DarXyde622d ago

Honestly, with that kind of track record, you can't convince me Spencer hasn't eaten it from the back in the name of self preservation. Probably unwashed...and at least twice.

That aside, my interpretation of everything here is Xbox has been mismanaged a bit too much and Nadella came down from his throne. The way it is now, I don't believe for a minute the multiplatform move was Spencer's idea. I don't even think the acquisitions was Spencer's work. At this point, I reckon he's got as much power in his role as Hunter Biden at a Ukrainian energy company.

DivineHand125622d ago

You can never tell how things will turn out if he had said yes to those games. Xbox already has access to some great IPs, however, they hardly do anything with them or fail to deliver. It's also possible their presentation wasn't good at the time, and they made sure the next presentation was better.

I believe that part of being successful is releasing things in the right place at the right time.

Many major corporations have a story similar to passing on successful business ideas. Let us look at Sony Pictures for example. Back when Marvel went bankrupt, they had the opportunity to buy the entire Marvel for only $25 Million but turned them down. An unnamed big shot at Sony reportedly claimed that “nobody gives a shit about any of the other Marvel characters,”. They ended up taking Spiderman for $10 Million instead.

https://www.avclub.com/sony...

Fast forward to today, we can see what the Marvel brand has done for Disney. Is it possible the same success would have been possible had Sony acquired those IPs. We can't say that for sure and it is possible most of those IPs that are successful today may not have been used.
