This article has a weird premise that graphics are an afterthought.

I expect these consoles to be able to do 1080p at 60fps for every game. They were released at the end of 2013. Now you have to wait another 6 years for that. A four year old underclocked GPU shouldn't be op par with these consoles. (GTX 480)

And the response to that gameplay matters most.

1. 60fps offers superior gameplay.
2. Why can't you have both gameplay and visual fidelity.

Due to this I play most multiplatform games on my PC. You still have own a PS4, Xbox One, Wii U for great games such as Uncharted, Halo, Zelda. Nothing can replace those games.

every game would be a waste though, if it does not need it. fast paces games are way better with 60+ granted, but slower paced games are fine with 30 and more graphic fidelity.

@jbsleek,

gtfo, not every game should tune down its graphics tremendously for the sake of 60fps. look at forza

JBSleek4346d ago

No every game benefits from a faster framerate.

Don't give me that nonsense about how it doesn't. You can have both but consoles simply can't do that.

Volkama4345d ago

Every game benefits from 60fps, it is just a question of how much it benefits, and whether that resource could be used more effectively for something else.

Future_20154346d ago

If gameplay is so important to you console fans and say its all about the gameplay and not the resolution or graphics then why do you settle for most of your games at 30fps

Gotta admit that linustechtips video was telling

As soon as they announced the prices I pretty much dropped any expectation of graphic fidelity comparing to or surpassing my PC.

It was (and still is) my hope that the core design of games will really open up and get more elaborate. The confines of the 512mb RAM were clearly holding things back, so I hoped to see those limits torn down. Actually BF4 showed some promise on that front, but we haven't really moved any further forward from there yet.

Console gamers want all this power yet aren't willing to pay for it. If these consoles were $599 the sales would be dismal.

I love gaming at 60fps and resolutions at 1080p or above, but what I can't figure out is why some PC gamers like you guys want that as a standard for the consoles. I mean, that really makes me scratch my head.

Basically any generation of hardware can do 1080p and 60fps. It's not like you get to a certain level of hardware performance and then you magically get 60fps in every game. It's always going to be a matter of trade-offs. To achieve high resolutions and framerates means that there will be less graphical performance to work with to push graphics in other areas.

So, as PC gamers don't we want graphics to be pushed as far as possible on the consoles? If graphics are pushed farther on the consoles then that means they will likewise be pushed farther on the PC and while consoles might be stuck at 30fps and 900p we can run those same games at 1080p+ and 60fps+. Isn't that the ideal situation?

I expected balance not one or the other. I expected innovation and less of the rehash. I wanted something more than just a one on one input. I wanted to see games that had no difficulty because it adjusted to the player on the fly. I expected a "play any where" ok maybe that's too much, but nothing from this new gen has dazzled me and justified my purchase.

akaFullMetal4345d ago

I at least expected good performance from ps4 and xbox one, which so far has been great for the ps4, not so much on the xbox one. The xbox one still has some games that drop below 30fps, down to the teens sometimes with Ryse, Tomb raider, and others. For the ps4, no games so far as I know, have dropped below 30fps, and lets not get started on screen tearing with Sniper Elite 3 and Titanfall on xbox one.

starchild4345d ago

I have a PS4 and really enjoy it, but there most certainly are games that drop below 30fps. Infamous Second Son, for example, drops below 30fps in quite a few areas or whenever things get hectic. Not that the framerate is horrible or anything, as it is definitely an improvement over many games on the PS3, but it does drop under 30fps fairly often. It's not a super rare occurrence like some people make it sound.

akaFullMetal4343d ago

The game doesn't drop below 30fps, it does have some judder when it goes from 50's to 35 fps. But luckily Suckerpunch added an option to lock at 30fps, if you like.

the consoles are capable of 1080p/60fps. Nearly all PS4 games are 1080p. Many are 60fps. I'm sure there will be more 60fps going forward as the devs are refining their tools for better performance.

To be honest though, why does everything need to be 60? Games are perfectly playable at 30 with no real lag.

TheDevKit4345d ago

No, the consoles of today run on the architecture developers learned to code for in school; this generation is going to be significantly different.

uth114345d ago

They learned to write to an graphics API.

They didn't learn to optimize at a low-level because the API abstracted that, and PC hardware is too fragmented to allow it.

But now with fixed hardware, you can set your compiler to optimize for that CPU, you can do tricks that work well on one set of graphics hardware. You can optimize for the number of cores in the system because you will know exactly how many cores will be there.

For PCs- optimization means buy new hardware. They almost never get optimized to this level.

Jdoki4345d ago

"To be honest though, why does everything need to be 60? Games are perfectly playable at 30 with no real lag."

It depends on the game. In fast moving games like driving or FPS, 60fps does make a difference to me. In most other games / genres it doesn't matter so much.

Although the late 2000s Turok wasn't my favorite, I would love a new entry. Open world survival with shotguns and dinosaurs. Not sure how we'd get the fusion cannon, but that would be pretty sweet too.

MadLad1367d ago

Lol

All of these games are pretty much universally praised. Outside of Timeshift I literally own all of these.

Venoxn4g1366d ago (Edited 1366d ago )

XIII, The Darkness 2, Far Cry: Blood Dragon, Timesplitters: future perfect, Bulletstorm are awesome games

gurp767d ago

I played them all, they are all good in their own way
I used to be obsessed with FPS games
